PDF Editor FAQ

Are MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton biased towards admitting Asian American students?

Elite schools have been biased against Asian-American students for so long that it is common knowledge at this point.Of course, this is masked under the guise of equal opportunity, known as affirmative action. In fact, Princeton University (ironically, one of the schools mentioned in the question) did a study in 2005 demonstrating that this was the case[1][1][1][1]and yet nothing has changed.According to the study, without affirmative action the acceptance rate for African-American candidates likely would fall nearly two-thirds, from 33.7 percent to 12.2 percent, while the acceptance rate for Hispanic applicants likely would be cut in half, from 26.8 percent to 12.9 percent. From that research paper:Using the estimated logistic regression coefficients, it is possible to convert the magnitude of these preferences to a common SAT metric. The bonus for African-American applicants is roughly equivalent to an extra 230 SAT points (on a 1600-point scale), to 185 points for Hispanics, 200 point for athletes, and 160 points for children of alumni. The Asian disadvantage is comparable to a loss of 50 SAT points. If you look up “Percentage Asian population at xyz university,” where xyz university is substituted by any top private school except for CalTech (which happens to have race blind admissions), you will notice the Asian-American student population hovers around 20%.A common narrative used to make a case against Asian-American discrimination goes, “Asians only make up <6% of the population, yet they are >20% the student population at elite universities.”The fallacy is in this argument is that it assumes each ethnic group applies to college in the same rate. This is empirically not the case.Asian-Americans are the least likely ethnicity to drop out of high school [2][2][2][2] and apply to elite universities in the greatest numbers[3][3][3][3] - in fact, according to UC data for top 50 schools (Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Irvine, Davis), Asian-Americans make up 35–40% of the applicant pool compared to 23-25% for White-Americans.Not to mention that Asian-Americans are the highest earning income group in the United States - affording them tutors and academic enrichment programs that other students may not have access to - and have culturally placed a stronger emphasis on education than the majority of western countries. All these factors suggest that at a minimum, the average Asian-American applicant is not worse than those of any other races; yet, for some reason they are underrepresented compared to the applicant pool. This is why when you take a look at the UC system, which legally has to be race blind[4][4][4][4], the Asian-American student populations of those campuses soar north of 40%, with schools such as UCSD and UCI even having Asian majority populations.“But California has a lot more Asians than other states!”Ok, then explain why Stanford, USC, and Pepperdine have Asian-American population rates at less than 20%.Did all the Asian-Americans who applied to UCLA forget to apply to USC?Or maybe the kids who applied to Berkeley forgot that Stanford existed? The result of having a system so clearly skewed against Asians-Americans is clear; the dropout rate is significantly higher in all other ethnicities. It’s dishonest that universities consciously choose to deprive someone of their future knowing and instead choose someone else less likely to graduate (condemning them to a life of debt without a degree) on an arbitrary factor such as race .As someone who grew up knowing this before I could add fractions, it was definitely disheartening and impacted the way I approached my education. It made me reluctant to even apply to private schools. But to any Asian-Americans out there asking, “what we can we do about this?”, I have only one answer:Work hard and kick ass. Aim to be at the top, and nothing less.If they make you run an extra mile, you show them that you can run 2 extra miles and faster than them.As a result of this, the time will slowly come when you make money and command power - and that’s when you can be the catalyst for change. You then either sue the schools or donate to the schools under the condition that they enforce reasonable and fair admissions policies. It’s a long, hard journey, one with little reward for decades at a time - but the way you succeed is not by ranting on social media, marching in rallies, or by giving up, it’s by working towards a position of power and capitalizing on it.And that is what I hope, if you are an Asian-American vying for change, you take away from my post.Footnotes[1] http://www.princeton.edu/~tje/files/files/webAdmission%20Preferences%20Espenshade%20Chung%20Walling%20Dec%202004.pdf[1] http://www.princeton.edu/~tje/files/files/webAdmission%20Preferences%20Espenshade%20Chung%20Walling%20Dec%202004.pdf[1] http://www.princeton.edu/~tje/files/files/webAdmission%20Preferences%20Espenshade%20Chung%20Walling%20Dec%202004.pdf[1] http://www.princeton.edu/~tje/files/files/webAdmission%20Preferences%20Espenshade%20Chung%20Walling%20Dec%202004.pdf[2] Status Dropout Rates[2] Status Dropout Rates[2] Status Dropout Rates[2] Status Dropout Rates[3] http://ucop.edu/institutional-research-academic-planning/_files/factsheets/2017/fall-2017-applications-table2.pdf[3] http://ucop.edu/institutional-research-academic-planning/_files/factsheets/2017/fall-2017-applications-table2.pdf[3] http://ucop.edu/institutional-research-academic-planning/_files/factsheets/2017/fall-2017-applications-table2.pdf[3] http://ucop.edu/institutional-research-academic-planning/_files/factsheets/2017/fall-2017-applications-table2.pdf[4] California Proposition 209 - Wikipedia[4] California Proposition 209 - Wikipedia[4] California Proposition 209 - Wikipedia[4] California Proposition 209 - Wikipedia

What is the company Invento about?

I get a lot of questions about what we build at Invento. Why is our robot so special? Are we competing with Boston Dynamics? Why don’t our robots walk?and so on….I thought I will write a post to clarify our key intellectual property. Our goal is to do what Personal Computers did to the world of computing — enable AI and robotics applications to reach the world. Were there computers before then? Yes, either in large defense/industrial use cases or home made kits. The same state where robots are now.Imagine a PC - you get a box with computing power, an operating system, a presentation layer and some applications that be augmented - and imagine that for the world of robots.People keep talking about AI powered applications —voice assistants, face recognition, emotion identification, recommendation algorithms etc — but lack proper interfaces to take it to the users. Amazon’s Echo solved a part of the problem —but still limited to voice. We build the robotic stack on top which both our and third party applications will deliver AI applications:Location awareness for indoors. Our robots can navigate indoors with a centimeter level precision — and can be commanded to go to a given position — a major revolution in existing robotics tech. GPS changed the way outdoors work — from hiring taxis to booking hotels, the ability to have global coordinates revolutionized applications. We are getting the same for indoors. This way the robotic assistants will know how to guide you to the pool at a hotel, guiding guests to a meeting room in an office, the product you are looking for in a mall, restocking shelves, security patrolling or serve you food at a restaurant. This is a small set — and a bigger set will emerge once end users can imagine with what is given.Gesture based immersive voice conversations: Have you ever had a long conversation with your Echo [or Google Home]? Me neither. They can take commands, but cannot have conversations. A key part of this is because humans communicate a lot with non-verbal cues. If I say perfectly motionless when you are talking infront of me, you will freak out. Humans need physical feedback [a gentle nod or hand movement] to keep continuing the conversations. We are working on key IP to both understand gestures and deliver them through hand, face and motion.Voice stack with Trigger less voice recognition: Existing state of the art in voice recognition is through trigger words [Alexa, Hey Google]. This both impedes conversations [you can give commands though] as well as provide branding challenges to brands [if you are Mercedes, why would you want your customers to call out Amazon’s brand in your car?]. Ours is face activated rather than trigger activated. After activation, you can still use our speech models [with restrictive vocabulary trained for custom needs] or 3rd party ones like Alexa or Google.Computer Vision stack. We have cameras and have already built wrapper around key computer vision APIs and some native tensorflow models built by us that we make it available as a library. This can help you detect emotions, recognize faces, detect objects etc.Of course we also provide you the entire physical hardware that has a lot of GPU firepower in it, cloud connection, server side APIs we will support through our Django layer for both maintaining the robots as well as writing server side utility.Any platform needs a few killer applications and our first key application is for guest management in offices. Visitor management still relies on paper and outdated tech, that is both painful to the visitor and expensive for the company. What if you enter a lobby and robot recognizes you, checks you in, guides you to the meeting room and brings you coffee while your host is alerted parallely? This particular application is already bought by some of the leading tech companies in the world and we will be going public in the next few months.Welcome to the world of robots!

What is the one thing you want to change about India and why?

There are too many things to change in India as a whole. Right from politics to politician to corruption to hygiene to Govt rules to dowry to caste system to basic facilities to safety to education system to road/drainage to endless list….Right now, I want Indians not to change the good things which already exists.Yes, rather I would talk about things that need not be changed. For an instance, we have much better healthy food habits. Realize the traditional way instead of blindly following the western culture. You could have pizza/burger and even cereals once in a while, but not as a regular habit.Too many stupidity I see, why do we have palm tress or palm-like tress in IT buildings. Because in California it is naturally grown but we should have Neem or similar trees which is natural and gives more air to breathe. Also, Indians should do any practice based on rational, logical thinking. Everything started for a reason, analyse it and ensure if it is applicable for today’s world before practicing something. Particularly for any superstitious belief.Embracing latest things which we don’t already have like Technology, cars etc is acceptable but not food, and not medicines are required for everything. Many problems could be treated by our traditional methods in a much better way, only fracture or things requiring immediate attention like operating heart requires latest technologies. People should be educated and should be made aware of the fusion of our own better conventional practice with newer technical things.List is endless… I stop here. As some of the Politicians in my state TamilNadu is insisting these things but people won’t vote for them. Because its not you or me who decide, still normal people decides the fate of India. Of course, most of them are ignorant, illiterate. Education might lay a strong foundation for future. Again, Govt should take care of it which is again controlled by corrupt politicians. Vicious circle man. At least I feel better by sharing some of my, may be amateurish thoughts, but feel bit relieved. One day, which may or might not come in future, if I get a chance I would like to contribute something for a better change. Till that, Let’s HOPE!
