A SUMMARY OF MY LIFE:It depends. Firstly, it depends on how your parents earned their money. In my case, my father comes from a middle-class family. In his 20s, he became a millionaire. In his 30-40s he became a multi-millionaire. By the time I was born, my dad was worth over 300 million dollars and now I think he is well over 500-600 million. So, my brothers actually lived through the time when my father was not super rich. I know that your question asks about billionaires but my father is actually a billionaire when you convert US to our currency in our homeland.I've studied in the most prestigious boarding schools. I remember that my high-school tuition was around 200k/year. So, you can expect that my classmates were either so freaking well off or outright billionaires. I can safely say that I was not the richest in the class. Anyway, from there I went on to finish my Bachelor of Arts. When I was doing my B.A., my classmates were thinking about what they were going to do next when they graduate. I did not have that problem because I actually didn't even need to work for the rest of my life. So, I started my Master's degree because I didn't know what to do. I lived in a penthouse, I was paying 200k a year just on my rent. My father bought me a Porsche Cayman when I started my M.A. as a gift for my relative academic success. I had my personal chef and other staff (for cleaning and driving me to campus etc.) at my house. So, my dad was at least dropping 400k/year in my M.A. days.After I finished my M.A. I enrolled in the PhD program. After a year into my Phd, I told my dad that I wanted a year out and travel the world. So, I spent a year visiting almost every country in the world. I visited all of the countries in Europe and Asia and most of South American countries. For instance, normally, people cannot take a year off like I did. Anyways, later on, I actually came back and finished my Phd in less than 4 years. They did not give me graduate scholarship because they actually requested a bank statement -- I had too much money in my account. I didn't not apply for the scholarship but it was a mandatory part of our application. I ended up covering the fees of some M.A. students through a grant I named anonymously because I felt bad that many M.A. students were having financial problems. My supervisors already knew I was very well off so they always invited me to events where they raised money for various organizations.My father always told me to watch my spending as he never really spends money for himself because he earned his money -- I am only spending it. Most of the money he spent on me was for my education. He valued education so much because he did not have the chance to go to prestigious schools like I did. So, he did whatever he can to make me comfortable when I was studying. For instance, he never bought me a car until my Master's degree. He never approved of my spending habits such as dropping 30k on Audemars Piguet watches. I actually bought two of them and he yelled at me on the phone for this kind of spending. But when it came to education, he would drop thousands of dollars with no regret.After I earned my Phd, I left academia. I built a home office and a personal library. I do independent research and write novels nowadays. I just live to learn because I don't need to do other mandatory things that others need to do such as working full-time. So, I can devote my time to whatever I want. I spend winters at our house in Switzerland and summers in St. Tropez and Greece.FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS:My elder brothers are way older than me, there is an age difference of over 20 years. So, I was still a kid when my father became super rich but my older brothers saw my dad's struggle when he had financial problems when he started his businesses. I did not see those days. My brothers actually work in our holding but they actually don't really do anything to be honest. They usually travel and hang out. I am the only one in our family who finished a Master's degree, let alone a Phd.Because my older brothers lived through a different stage of my dad's wealth, they made different friends along the way. All of my friends are at least millionaires but my brothers had friends from middle-class as well. This is why my relationship with my brothers is different as we socialized quite differently. They actually complain that I am too spoiled and they did not have their own chef and drivers when they were studying. I know that I am spoiled a lot but I grew out of this over the years. Despite the fact that my brothers' complaints are justified, I am not as spoiled as I was in my undergrad.My relationship with my mom is very different and I spend much more time with my mom than my dad or brothers. Also, when I was growing up, my dad cheated on my mom couple of times so I actually saw some big fights between them too. Other than this though, we had a relatively peaceful family. Because we had a huge house, I was not even seeing my parents even if they were in the house. We got together whenever we wanted to see each other. Over the years, however, our family separated a lot. My brothers are always travelling and my dad is still working and my mom loves Greece. To overcome this separation problem, my dad hosts a dinner at our house in France so we can get together at least once a month. In that dinner, we talk about our lives and my dad asks us if we need anything.CONCLUSIONAll in all, I can safely say that it is good to be a child of a super rich person. But again, this is my own experience and I know from my friends that there are super rich families which are torn apart pretty badly. For instance, one of my friends father died 7 years ago and there was a dispute on his wealth and their family was torn apart after that. To overcome this problem, my dad made us sign a paper about wealth distribution after he passes away.Like I said, despite the fact that I am coming from a super rich family, I could not show off what I had until my Master's and in my Master's I was too old to show off anyway. Also, who am I going to show off to? All of my friends already as rich as I am. Porsche is not even an expensive car for my friends as all of them have faster and more expensive cars than I do. The only thing I can say that I lived in really good conditions and: never cooked, never cleaned, never did laundry, never earned my own money, never thought about my financial status, never worried about my future... I travelled to anywhere I wanted in first class... I did whatever I wanted to do. I met with many important people along the way, from presidents to ministers, from billionaires to CEOs. Although such people never really helped me in my endeavours as I was in academia for at least over 10 years of my life.

There are countless different grants from various agencies, in many different fields. As such, I can’t give an answer that can possibly cover every single case. I shall concentrate on grants in mathematics, and leave other examples to other people. I will end with a few examples of what could be termed “gaming the system,” but I will leave you to decide whether or not any of these are serious problems that actually require fixing (and, if they do require fixing, whether the correct solution is to try and block researchers from doing these things).With that said, there are some commonalities. A misunderstanding that I think some people have is that they think that when you get grant money, you are effectively being written something like a blank check. This is not so: typically, you don’t get this money directly at all—it is held by a separate entity, and you get access to it by requesting reimbursements, which have to be carefully itemized. Secondly, obtaining a grant is exceptionally hard—not many people get them, and you have to demonstrate a consistent record of excellence in the form of papers published in reputable journals, as an example. Many grants have a strict time limit; some you can have extended, but it will require further review. Let me give you some explicit examples, as promised.I’m currently waiting to hear back from the American Mathematical Society, to see whether or not they will give me a AMS-Simons Travel Grant (fingers crossed!). If you look, there is a whole slew of requirements for being eligible for such a grant, but it is mostly summed up by the following passage:Each grant provides an early-career mathematician with $2,000 per year for two years to be used for research-related travel. Applicants must be located in the United States (or be U.S. citizens employed outside the U.S.) and must have completed the PhD within the last four years. The department of the awardee will also receive a small amount of funding to help enhance its research environment.Note that this award has to be used for research-related travel, specifically. They don’t take my word on this: the way it works is that I specify ahead of time a mentor, who is a researcher in my field, who is tasked with determining whether any sort of trips that I plan are actually appropriate to my research program; I have to receive approval from them before each trip in order to get reimbursed. To get reimbursed, I have to send the relevant documentation to the AMS directly, and I get a check back in return.The AMS is also quite careful as to who it gives these grants to. I had to send them my curriculum vitae, two reference letters from researchers in my field, and write a short summary of my research; the first part of this summary must be readable by any mathematician, and the second, longer, part should be readable by a mathematician in my vague area of expertise. All of this will be reviewed by a panel, although the exact details of how this happens are unknown.Another grant that we could discuss are the Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. These grants are substantially larger—they are $150,000 for the period when someone is doing a post-doc. The requirements for being eligible for this fellowship are again quite stringent, and again, they do not write you a blank check. Instead, that money goes to the institution where you happen to working, and you can make use of it to reimburse yourself for research-related expenses. There are usually all sorts of restrictions to this; as an example, if you are buying plane tickets, you generally need to use an American airline. I personally wanted a grant like this not so that I would have great wealth, but because it would allow me to do a post-doc wherever I wanted. Of course, I (like virtually everyone else) didn’t get this grant. It is much more stringent than the AMS; you need more references letters, you write two different summaries of your research (one very short, one comparatively longer, for different audiences), you have to submit a bunch of extra documents like a data management plan (which is actually irrelevant for mathematicians, but you still need to do it)… It’s an involved, time-consuming process.There are a couple more grants that I could discuss, but I think that the overall message is clear. As promised, let me now give a few examples of how someone might try to game this system.Whatever panel is reviewing your application is going to be going through hundreds if not thousands of submissions, so while they might do a more in-depth look afterward, they will almost certainly do a very quick pass over first, to see if you are vaguely qualified. If you only have one paper on your curriculum vitae, this may be a problem—it might be a fantastic paper that proves many wonderful results, but it is quite possible that no one will see that. A way that you might try to combat this is that rather that publishing this as one very long paper, you may try to split into several, smaller papers. Note that there is a hard limit on the extent to which you can do this: these papers still have to be published by reputable journals—otherwise, there is no point.If you are low on publications (as most young career mathematicians are), and you don’t have time to get your next paper through peer review, you might put it up on the arXiv online—if the deadline for submitting a grant is coming up soon, you might try to wrap it up a bit quicker (perhaps by proving a weaker result than what you were originally going for). For sure, this will not be seen as anything approaching an equal to an actual published paper—but it will still give you some additional credit.To increase the visibility of papers that you do have, you might try partnering with a better-known researcher. From what I know, this is a common tactic in biology and chemistry; it is actually not entirely clear whether this is a good tactic in mathematics. Certainly, you can overdo it—if all of your papers are co-authored with more notable mathematicians, there is a danger that your own contributions will be seen as unimportant. As such, it is beneficial to have a collection of good papers on which you are the solo author.Some grant giving institutions, like the NSF, require that you demonstrate the importance of your work to society. This is difficult for pure mathematicians, because direct applications of your research may not manifest until after your death. There are two approaches to combat this: try to move your research in a more applied direction, or at least closer to the mathematical mainstream; alternatively, focus on the benefits of your non-research related work. In particular, you may stress your work in doing community outreach and training underrepresented minorities. I, for example, usually mention in passing my work on Quora, and detail my involvement in REU-type programs, where we work with undergraduate students over the summer and teach them how to do original research and present it. (For me, this was a happy accident: I was interested in doing those things anyway.)
