Are companies started by SpaceX staff statistically more successful than average?

I just started a new company this year so we shall see how we do. I also involved another one of the others on the initial SpaceX team.Something that is not well known is that the core of the early SpaceX staff came from our early efforts putting together a mission to Mars called Life To Mars. As the story goes, we designed the mission and the Russians would not make a deal with Elon for the rockets so he decided that we could “build them ourselves”. That was the genesis of SpaceX. How he got to that point is also very interesting and instructive. One of the early ideas that we proposed to Elon when we were starting SpaceX was starting with a very small vehicle. The reason for suggesting this was that John Garvey and Chris Thompson, involved in the Life To Mars mission design, were also building and launching small rockets as a small business - Garvey Spacecraft Corporation. Elon visited John’s test in the Mojave (which was a failure) and got to know Tom Mueller who eventually became employee #1 and the VP of Propulsion. Tom had built a 10,000 lb liquid rocket engine in his garage. When Elon saw that, according to what he told me, he realized that it would be possible to build the SpaceX rockets to launch Life to Mars ourselves. When he saw Tom’s garage rocket engine, he knew that it was true.We formed SpaceX with many of Garvey Spacecraft Corporation’s key players. I went with SpaceX but John stayed away instead deciding to focus on his dream of a ‘microsat launch vehicle” dedicated to launching lots and lots of microsats. Fast forward 15 years, I founded two successful companies StratSpace and Vintage Exotics which remain going concerns. Through StratSpace, we helped Skybox get started, Spaceflight get off the ground, developing financing for Rocket Lab, Planet Lab, Moon Express, Orbital insight and Black Sky as well as sitting on the source selection panels for dozens of major NASA missions including JUNO which just arrived at Jupiter. this year StratSpace played a pivotal role in mission operations software for OSIRIS-Rex which will bring back asteroid samples. Garvey continued to build Garvey Spacecraft Corporation and built and flew over 30 sub-orbital vehicles and the design for a larger orbital launcher. John also helped Sea Launch become operational and served on SpaceX failure review teams. The story took an interesting turn this year when I co-founded Vector Space Systems (www.vectorspacesystems.com) with John Garvey and Ken Sunshine. We have acquired Garvey Spacecraft Systems (Team, IP and Assets) and this gives us a 10 year running head start. We are building the original launch vehicle that we proposed to Elon back in 2001. The micro satellite market has matured along with the technology to make this capability affordable and reliable. We are planning operational service by 2018 and are making rapid progress. We are also expanding into the platform space by offering satellites ready made for payloads as the market is beginning to demand this capability. While SpaceX has created an ecosystem around its F9 and Dragon capsule, we are focusing the same strategy on low micro side of the satellite market. Truly the seeds of ideas that once germinated SpaceX are now germinating Vector. Stay tuned !

What is the likelihood of mandatory Coronavirus vaccinations in the US?

In this country? In the US of A? While there are a few vaccines that fall into the “mandatory” bucket most of them are recommended. The COVID-19 vaccine will likely start off as a recommended vaccination based on risk factors i.e. those who travel to impacted countries, healthcare workers, etc.The process of making a vaccine mandatory is largely owned by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) which is a part of the CDC. Briefly:The ACIP will work prior to the FDA’s licensure to look at the recommended vaccine schedule along with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American College of Physicians (ACP) and will use a number of Problem, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) metrics to determine their recommendations. The ACIP work group will fill out a questionnaire known as the Evidence to Recommendation (EtR) that looks like: [1]After the PICO questions are formed, they will perform a Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccination proposal and publish those results in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWR). The GRADE process was developed by the Evidence to Decision (EtD) frameworks which came from Project DECIDE, an European Commission working group focused on building tools to make such evidence-based assessments. As an example of all of this, back in February 2020, ACIP made the following recommendation regarding the Ebola Vaccine.Pre-exposure vaccination with rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine is recommended for adults 18 years of age or older in the United States population who are at potential risk of exposure to Ebola vaccine (species Zaire ebolavirus) because they:Are responding to an outbreak of Ebola virus disease; orWork as healthcare personnel at a federally-designated Ebola Treatment Center in the United States; orWork as laboratorians or other staff at biosafety-level 4 facilities in the United States. These recommendations have been adopted by the CDC Director and will become official once published in MMWR.Nothing about the vaccine being mandatory but recommended for these high risk individuals.Footnotes[1] https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/recs/grade/downloads/ACIP-evidence-rec-frame-508.pdf
