Mahatria Ra told a story which I really had the privilege to listen to.A boy named Teddy was in this teacher’s class that year. He was the most dirtiest boy that the teacher never liked to acknowledge. She had a habit of saying I Love You all to her class children every morning right after the prayer. She knew in her heart that she did not like this boy Teddy at all.His grades were poor and in the term’s progress card she wrote, “Very Bad performance”. The Progress card was sent out to the Principal’s desk for signature, who was alarmed at the sight of the teacher’s remark. She called in the teacher and asked her to go through Teddy’s previous year Progress cards.This boy was so brilliant that he was the most outstanding student since his grade 1 and Somewhere around Grade 3 it was written that Teddy had lost his mother. Since then, Teddy’s progress has been a downward curve. The teacher felt bad for the boy and the very next day she went ot the class with a determination.This morning when she told I love you all she knew she was lying because she loved Teddy a little more that others. She started with helping teddy out in his studies and cared for him specially.By the end of the year Teddy has become an outstanding student once again and the teacher was so proud.It was a ritual that by the end of every year all the students give out gifts to their classroom teacher. The teacher’s desk was filled with gift boxes all huge and small. The teacher searched for Teddy’s gift and found it wrapped in a newspaper. The students all had to stifle their laughter but the teacher opened it eagerly and found a letter along with a half used perfume bottle and watch with its stones fallen.The letter read “To the best teacher in the world,This was the perfume my mom last used and this was the watch they removed from her body when she died of cancer.love,Teddy”She strapped up the watch and sprayed the perfume and exclaimed that it was the best gift she’s ever got.A few years rolled by, but at the end of every year there will be a letter on her desk stating “To the best teacher in the world,I have met many teachers this year but you are the best.Love,Teddy”Another few years passed by and Teddy has long graduated from the school. The teacher had her retirement now was retired in a chair, the watch still strapped on her wrinkly wrist. That day a postman gave her a letter and the sender’s address read,From,Theodore SmithCEO, XXX .She opened it to read a letter from the familiar handwriting.“I’ve met many other peple in the world and so far you’re the best.I invite you to attend my wedding this month and I have attached tickets for you. Please do come.love,Teddy”She went to the wedding and she was made to sit in the seat labelled as MOTHER .

Typically, they observe a veteran teacher for a week or two, then teach that veteran teacher’s classes for the remaining weeks of the experience. When the students aren’t around, the veteran teacher shows the student teaching some of the behind-the-scenes stuff (how to enter grades into the online grade book… so exciting!) and generally gives them some pointers on how to improve their teaching.It’s basically a teaching internship.The veteran teacher (known as the “cooperating teacher” in these situations) evaluates the student teacher and reports their evaluations directly to the student teacher’s placement coordinator. That’s the contact person from the college.Sometimes, the college compensates the cooperating teacher with some free classes at their college.The cooperating teacher may also be asked to write a letter of recommendation for the student teacher.In some cases, the student teacher knows ahead of time that their cooperating teacher is leaving that position, and the student teacher, having experience with the school and students already, is first in line for the open position.

I have three important things on my side when it comes to dealing with student apathy:I work at a private school, where parents pay about $6,000 annually in tuition.Most of my students’ parents highly value education and support their child’s teachers. I rarely have an adversarial parent.I work with students in the 11–14-year-old range, so they (mostly) still care what their parents think.So, my most effective weapon against student apathy is an email about it to parents, along with documentation.For example, I recently finished a 2-week unit on persuasive essays. I showed the students how to do them, the students did rough drafts on Google Docs, I edited the rough drafts, went over some things everyone seemed to be missing, and gave them a week to fix the mistakes and turn in a final copy. This is standard essay writing protocol for this grade level.On Google Docs, I can see the exact edits the students made, and when they made it. About 50% of the class made no edits at all, or only fixed a handful of mistakes I pointed out to them in their rough draft, but made zero attempt to improve their paper beyond that. That is, they didn’t care enough to do anything above the bare minimum. Some didn’t even care that much.So, I emailed every single one of their parents with the news that their students weren’t doing their classwork/homework. For some parents, I included screenshots showing that their child’s essay was “last edited 14 days ago,” which was the day we did the rough drafts in class.It took me 20 minutes to email all of those parents. By the time I sent the last email, the parent from the first email had already responded, saying they’d make sure their child got their head back in the game.The next day, all but two of the students came in with their final essays edited and ready to go. They lost points for them being late at that point, but at least they did the work.Their parents were able to motivate them way better than any teacher could. That makes all of the difference.
