It would be impossible to produce a 'true and fair' view of the business without this concept being implemented by accountants.Materiality principle: Accountants only record events significant enough to justify the usefulness of the information. Without this principle, vital information in the financial reports that summarise tens of thousands (sometimes millions) of financial transactions would be lost in the noise of data and information.Prudence/Conservatism principle: The rule is to recognise revenue only when it is reasonably certain of happening and recognise expenses as soon as they are incurred (whether paid or not). Accounting in this manner ensures that financial statements do not overstate the financial position of the business. As a rule, accounting chooses to err on the side of caution and to protect stakeholders from acting on inflated or overly positive results.Consistency convention: According to this convention, transaction classification and valuation methods should remain unchanged from one period to the next. This allows for more meaningful comparisons of financial performance between periods by the stakeholders which helps them form a 'true and fair' view of the financial performance of the business.Dual aspect concept: A business, as a separate entity, records the movement of economic resources that flow from a source (credit) to a destination/use (credit). The source of these resources for the business come from liabilities, owners capital and profits and being are used to buy assets or expensed in the production of revenue. The dual aspect concept keeps the accounting equation (Assets = Liabilities + Owners Equity) in balance. If this concept was not followed the business would produce inaccurate information about its financial performance and position.
