My husband and I went through the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University program to get out of debt. We buckled down and after several years paid off our mortgage in 2008. We then ramped up our savings for retirement and kids’ college.About three years later, my top secret security clearance was up for its five year renewal. The office accepted the massive questionnaire I had to fill out. A few days later, an investigator called me. “It is incomplete.”I didn’t think it was but asked, “What section?”“Your financial information. The investigator asked, “How did you pay off a mortgage you listed in your last 5-year review?”I made the mistake of just saying the name, “Dave Ramsey”.“And how much money did Mr. Ramsey give you and why!” This was an angry accusation.Pause. “Have you heard of the Financial Peace University program? It is a get out of debt program. We followed it and paid everything off.”“You can’t afford that on your salary and with two kids -”“My husband is an engineer. Did I leave his income off the form?” Pause. “He earns more than I do.”Investigator blinks. “Two engineering salaries.” It was more a question than a statement.“Yeah, and getting on a tight budget so we could pay everything off. If I can access the internet, I can bring up the budgeting forms.”The investigator determined that yes, given our incomes, we could have put an additional $500–1500 against the mortgage every month for two years despite having two young children. Especially driving 5–10 year old cars and not caring about keeping up with the Jonses. We weren’t rich, but we looked poor compared to people who chose larger homes in “better” neighborhoods and prioritized lifestyle over life goals.I amended the forms to include my husband’s salary. The paperwork was submitted and my security clearance renewed.
