What are the best ways to prevent cancer?

Roughly 3 in 4 cancers can be prevented. To catch a good amount of the cancers that are not easily preventable will require appropriate cancer screening, genetic counseling/screening, and recognizing cancers early. Here’s a long list of possible ways to prevent cancer beyond regular annual checkups and screening.Avoid all tobacco products and exposure to secondhand smoke. Vaping, hookah/waterpipe counts.Diet. An increased risk of colon cancer is associated with a low fiber diet. Limiting red meats has weak evidence, but may help. Avoiding processed meats or meats cooked at high heats has stronger evidence, as it is linked to production of HCA and PAHs. Marinating meats before high heat is applied may reduce the risk.Regular exercise. Exercise reduces the risk of colon, breast and possibly reproductive cancer. High intensity exercise without risk of injury for at least 75 minutes per week may reduce visceral fat (riskier type of fat for cancer) more than moderate to low intensity exercise. Weight training should be included, at least twice per week.Avoid being overweight and obese. Obesity increases risk of cancer. This includes abdominal obesity (even if one doesn’t “look fat”). Fat cells are not dormant or dead, they are active cells that have hormonal/endocrine functions and affect the body.Avoid alcohol, alcohol based mouthwash, and drinking overly hot drinks. This increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Alcohol increases oral, larynx, liver, colon, breast cancer. Smoking makes alcohol’s effects worse.A daily low-dose aspirin may reduce risk of colon cancer but has life-threatening bleeding as a side effect that requires physician supervision.Avoid exposure to radiation when possible. Residential Radon increases the risk of lung cancer. UV increases the risk of skin cancer, this includes sunlight and tanning. Getting medical imaging studies only when needed (besides MRIs) is important. Note that there is radiation in the background at all times. There is no established clear casual link between microwaves, cell phones radio frequency and electromagnetic radiation with cancer. I would not be concerned at this moment, but you may consider using earphones to reduce exposure even lower.Avoid exposure to environmental and industrial toxins such as asbestos, aromatic amines, benzene, and PCBs.Women and children: Birth control pills may reduce the risk of endometrial, ovarian and colorectal cancers but might increase risk of cervical cancer. The overall reduction of cancer is generally worthwhile. Avoid certain types of breast implants as there is a small chance of increased cancer risk. Breastfeeding may reduce the mother’s breast cancer risk. Prenatal vitamins are important and may reduce cancer risk in the child. Childhood physical abuse is associated with elevated rates of cancer in adulthood.Avoid infections, including sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and hepatitis, which greatly increase the risk of cancers. Follow the CDC schedule for vaccines. There is often some confusion for HPV vaccines. Both genders should get the HPV shot, as men can get penile, throat, and/or anal cancer. Young boys and girls should get the HPV vaccine. Young adults should get it. Older adults can also get it if sexually active. Gardasil 9 is FDA approved for women and men aged 27 to 45.Lack of quality sleep has some moderate evidence linking to cancer. Could also have to do with weight gain and lack of exercise.Vitamin D may reduce the risk of prostate and colon cancer. It likely requires a supplement if you do not get enough sunlight as it is very difficult to get enough with diet.High doses of Vitamin E from supplementation may increase risk of cancer.Get paid to prevent cancer in a clinical trial! - ECOG-ACRIN. MRIs do not increase cancer risk.Get treated for stomach problems. Helicobacter pylori can increase risk of MALT lymphoma from chronic gastritis.Avoid undercooked fish, especially in SE Asia. Opisthorchis viverrini can cause cholangiocarcinoma.Avoid contaminated fresh water especially in Africa and the Middle East. Schistosoma hematobium can cause bladder cancer.Other parasites may increase the risk of cancer, such as Toxocara canis. Infected dogs and related animals via oral-fecal transmission, eating soil, undercooked meat, and even stroking fur of infected dogs can result in infection.Mycobacterium tuberculosis may increase risk of lung cancer. So avoid getting TB - i.e. going to jail.Malassezia fungi overgrowth (which may likely be a large cause of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis) may increase risk of skin cancer. Medicated shampoos may help control the overgrowth in the scalp. Malassezia may be linked to colorectal and pancreatic cancer. An overgrowth of Candida albicans may be linked to cancer, but is unproven.Hair stylists who are regularly exposed to large quantities of professional hair products may have an increased risk of bladder cancer.Certain types of moles or a large number of moles can increase cancer risk.Very salty pickled foods may increase the risk of gastric cancer.Drinking 4–6 cups of coffee (black) per day may reduce risk of colorectal cancer.Kava consumption may reduce overall cancer risk but may also increase risk of melanoma. There is a risk of liver problems.Exposure to air pollution (including indoor air pollution) may increase risk of cancer.Plastics may have hormone disruptors such as BPA (BPA plasticizer alternatives may be similar) that may affect hormone dependent tumors.

Was Ariel’s color specified in the original Danish tale of the Little Mermaid?

Was Ariel’s color specified in the original Danish tale of the Little Mermaid? In the Hans Christian Anderson tale the titular character has no name, and is only called “the ‘Little Mermaid.’” In an earlier, 1970s Anime version she is called “Marina.”In the HCA version she is said to be pale, pale white, as was the European standard of beauty of the time—getting a tan didn’t become big until the 1930s, when it went from a sign working “in the fields” to a sign you had money lay around on the beach all day.I assume this question is being asked because of the “live action” version Disney is coming out.Well, for those among us so concerned with what happened in the “Danish Tale”(1) The Mermaid was in love with the prince and wanted to have a soul so she could go to heaven(2) The Sea Witch is not evil, but rather a neutral enabler. She tries to talk the mermaid out of it, but tells her she can make her human—with pretty legs and the ability to dance but she will feel as though she is being stabbed during her transformation, and when she walks she will feel as though she is walking on knives.(3) The Mermaid gives up her voice (by having her tongue taken out) as payment for services rendered.(4) The Sea Witch tells the Mermaid that if the Prince marries her, part of his soul will flow into her, and she will then have a soul. If he marries another, the day after her heart will break and she will dissolve into sea foam—the fate of mermaids when they die.(5) She drinks the potion and the Prince finds her, and basically treats her like a pet(6) The Prince is arranged to be married to another, and at first he refuses but then finds out she was the young lady who nursed him back to health, and he credits with saving his life (and not the Mermaid who actually did) and he had been in love with her during his recovery—and jumps at the chance.(7) The mermaid sadly awaits to die when her sisters arrive having sold their long hair to the Sea Witch in exchange for a dagger. They tell her to plunge it into the princes heart and when his blood touches her legs she will turn back into a Mermaid and live out her 300-year-old life.(8) The Mermaid can’t do it and throws herself into the sea, where she dissolves into foam. Only she finds she has become a “daughter of the air” and will spend 300 years doing “good deeds” to earn a soul and enter heaven. The book ends saying that the tears of naught children add to her tenure and this it becomes a “better not pout, better not cry” message for kids.So the 1989 Disney version gets far, far away from the Hans Christian Anderson story. The live action story will be based on the Disney tale and they can cast and tweak it as they see fit. If one feels upset that they abandon the source material—and the race of the actress playing the Mermaid is the thing that is most upsetting—you should probably ask yourself why (hint, it’s racism) and this can be a good time for some self-reflection and growing into a better person.People like having representation. And white people don’t want for it.*Edit* I have pointed out the many, many ways in which Disney changed this story to fit their formula…and if you still get hung up on the race of the actress you need to sit and think about that for a while.

What's wrong with the US healthcare system?

A few weeks ago, I had to take my mom to the emergency/urgent care.It wasn’t for something we considered terribly urgent, but for the last few days, she had a swelling in her hand.Initially, she thought she had sprained it from carrying heavy groceries, or perhaps because the grocery bag had nipped a nerve or something. The pain began, it grew, and then it dimmed away. The hand had the same swelling and redness, though. On the second day, she said the pain was gone. Strange, I thought, because the redness nor the swelling was gone.I took her to be safe. Now, the reason I had my reservations was not related to my fear or suspicion of hospitals, nor is it because I believe I am an expert in anything—the Coronavirus is upon us, and I thought the worst place to be right now would be a hospital, especially if we didn’t need to be there. And, especially if it is something that could go away on its own.Anyhow, we went. I was around 99.9% sure that she had a staph infection. It looked like cellulitis. Again, I’m not an expert, but judging from its appearance and my mom’s description, I had seen it before and know what it is like. We needed antibiotics. We arrive, and they immediately tell me that I can’t go in. They say it will take about an hour. My mom assures me things should be fine. The nurse is nice enough. She is working hard: With the current spread of the disease most hospitals are doing double or triple duty.I go home. I’m lucky, home is only 5 minutes away.My mom calls: “They’re telling me that I need to stay overnight.”Weird, I think, but sure, if it is necessary. They gave her fluids, they ran tests, they had an MRI done. The last one is strange, as they essentially know that it is a staph infection at that point. They were giving her a set of antibiotics overnight.I pick her up the next day, around 18–20 hours later. She seems great. I’m extremely grateful for the amazing nurses there taking the time to talk to me. They all work very hard. Her hand was nearly normal, almost all the swelling is gone. I was right, she had a staph infection. Cellulitis.A few weeks later, I get a bill:Total amount: Almost $20,000.The bill for around 15 hours of hospital stay that the doctors strictly ordered as necessary is almost as much as my mom makes in an entire year. The most interesting part about the bill is that it isn’t actually related to costs associated with treatment. I’m not sure who is going to validate that an MRI and IV with antibiotics equates to $20,000 of service. The nurses don’t get paid a chunk of that money. The doctors get paid enough by the hospitals to keep quiet about costs.Something sinister happens at the upper management of hospitals. It’s atrocious because nobody who actually does the work in the hospitals is getting paid whatever sum of money they’re getting. The U.S. healthcare system is in dire need of transparency. The consumer needs to know why they pay for something if the efficacy of a cheaper alternative is pretty much the same. The only help my mom got from the hospital was through the nurses and then once in a while for a few minutes with the doctors. So then, what are we exactly charging? There are about 25 line items, all of which I blocked out because of privacy concerns and legality that document the same thing repetitively: Service for staying, a test, and then fluids.Any relevant study you look at will show you the true costs for many of these basic items being a tenth to a hundredth of what they’re charging. Furthermore, most studies will show that oral antibiotics for something like a staph infection work as well or better than IV.Here is an article from 2013 on the New York Times citing that IV bags regularly cost 44 cents to a dollar. Here is a hospital bill charging anywhere from $500 to $800 for that same IV bag.In California, an MRI can cost people anywhere from $200 to $6,221.Here is a study that calculates the operating cost and break-even for an MRI scan (in India). They found that the total operating break-even cost was around ₹3,875 to ₹4,129. This translates to less than $100.In 2018, Medicare and Medicaid spending was around $1.35 trillion. We are paying for that. On top of the cash paid for my mom’s emergency visit, we, as a society, pay for the inflated costs that the hospital makes up for treatment.Around 1993, Rick Scott was the head of a big hospital network called HCA Healthcare. This was the same time that a bunch of his former employees started speaking up about questionable billing practices to Medicare—in the amounts of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars. Some of those items?Overcharging the government for the costs associated with running the hospitals.Paying physicians kickbacks in exchange for referring patients to their hospitals (which then they’d overcharge services to the government).Unlawful charging for costs involving wound care facilities. This federal case would take almost a decade to complete. The government collected around $2 billion in criminal penalties and fees for the fraud ring. But I wonder how strained the government’s resources are today in comparison to the 1990s.Better yet, you would think Rick Scott would go to prison, or, rather, never be able to put himself in a leadership position ever again. The situation is hilariously depressing.Rick Scott left with a $10 million settlement. Not only that, he owned 10 million shares, which amounts to more than $350 million.Rick Scott became Governor of Florida in 2010. In 2014, he was re-elected. In 2018, he won the senate seat in Florida. That’s right, scam artist and master conman is now in charge of creating policy in the United States.Someone who admitted to defrauding the taxpayer in the amount of billions.Leaders today are lying. The healthcare system isn’t wrong. The healthcare system is built wrong, on purpose. The people defrauding 30 years ago are now in charge of creating policy for the fraudsters of the modern era.One day soon there won’t be a tax base to suck money out of anymore.Healthcare systems are not complicated. Our healthcare costs are gone through the roof by intention and design; as long as healthcare is privately owned, the few at the top will take every last dollar they can.And they’ll continue taking it from you, the taxpayer. At least, until you start voting them out. At a minimum, voting people like Rick Scott out.
