Fishermen, if you could take only one rod and reel to pond fish for big bass in late summer/early fall, lots of cover, and fairly shallow water what rod and reel would it be? What bait would you use and why?

Fishermen, if you could take only one rod and reel to pond fish for big bass in late summer/early fall, lots of cover, and fairly shallow water what rod and reel would it be? What bait would you use and why? Here’s where I step out of the circle, break the mold, and go my own way. I…my fishing stuff is stored in my pickup for the time being. Two piece rods stored behind the seat, tackle box in the passenger floorboard. That, in itself, is not very important. Storage is storage. But, off the top of my head…I don’t remember the brand of my bigger spinning reel that’s mounted on my white fishing rod. I know it’s a 3000 size and it’s spooled with 30lb mono Trilene XL, but the brand of the reel escapes me. I know I paid $25 for it at a secondhand store and it’s really smooth and works great. Think the rod is a Shakespeare, and I recall that it’s a medium heavy. It’s got a good spine to it, and it’s not too flimsy. I’ve horsed 20lb catfish out with it all night long without breaking it or having concern that it was about to go kerpop. My bass rod is a Shakespeare. Durango maybe? The reel is a 7.6:1 Piscifun Phantom X (and by god aint we all so damn impressed) and I recall this because I just recently coughed up the money to buy it. Good baitcast reel. I’ve used it to drag out 2.5lb largemouth, pound and a half smallies all day.My panfish rod is a…a…I paid like $12 at Walmart for a combo, reel was crap, replaced it with a 1000 size Daiwa or Diawa I got off amazon for cheap. In my mind, if I’m going for bass I want my bass rod. It’s red in color, has the baitcaster on it. If I’m catfishing, I want my big white rod with the spinner. Panfishing, I want the black and orange rod with the baby spinner on it. This is the depth and breadth of my concern about brand make, model; it’s not what’s important. My point? For a very long time, at least in my nation, people caught fish for sport and sustenance using (cue the dramatic music) a cane pole. Sometimes not even a legit cane pole; they’d cut a willow branch, tie on a line, and go fishin’. End of the fishing trip the line was untied and the branch discarded; they’d cut another next time when they wanted to go fishin’ again. Despite not having a super duper high technicality multi-gear Fish Hooker 14000 with a computer overlay braid enhancing depth tracking on board GPS system with patented Tension Tracker…they did okay. Caught fish for the table, had a good time.Watch some fishing shows like Jeremy Wade’s River Monsters. Guy goes to dinky little nowhere places and in some of those places, the locals are using hooks they bodged together on lines they bodged together, have no rod, no reel, and they catch enough to stay alive. Dugout canoes, handlines, bait they found in a rotten stump, and they’re gettin’ it done. They don’t “go fishing”, they “catch fish”; There’s no question when they go whether they’re going to catch, they just do. They have to.My entire fishing tackle collection could be bought again for less than $300. Most expensive part would be the reel I just got, the Phantom X, which cost $50. The rest is dirt cheap stuff.Thing is, there’s not one off-name brand hook in my tackle box and I don’t use off-name line. Trilene, Stren, Eagle Claw hooks…actually, I’m pretty sure I have more money invested in hooks and line than I have in my last reel, the Phantom. If I get some swivels I’m not sure about, I rig up a test with one and see how hard I have to pull on it to break it.Reel? Doesn’t really matter if it feels sturdy and can hold drag.Rod? Doesn’t really matter if it’s sturdy and doesn’t crackle when you flex it as hard as the fish you’ll target with it could.Line, hooks, terminal tackle? Buy the best you can afford and never compromise. The reel and rod is nothing but a tool to store line and move the fish around during the fight. The terminal tackle and line, that’s your connection to the fish, that’s where the rubber meets the road. It’s never happened, but if I hook into a lunker and my reel or rod breaks, I’m grabbing the line by hand and tossing the rod and reel to the side to continue the fight by hand. What really matters? The line, terminal tackle and bait.Bait? I’ve fished a lot and while I enjoy lure fishing…it’s a method but not the most effective to get a fish excited. If it bleeds, it leads. That’s not just a media thing, it’s a fishing thing too. The cast net that’s behind the seat of my truck is responsible for me catching more fish than all my lures combined. Lures entice and invite shock bites, or reaction bites. A live shiner is offering the fish a free lunch, no twitchy twitches necessary. It’s like you sitting where you are and me rolling up “Hey, free pizza, you want it? I was just in the area, don’t mind me. Here, have this, take it, be my guest. Name brand, you like Domino’s right?”Pretty much everybody likes a free lunch delivered to their hands. Fish do too. You wiggle a Whopper Plopper in front of ‘em, you get bites, but it’s more an instinctual thing; see movement, whack it. With live bait, the fish is cruising along and they see a prey fish and while there’s still some instinctual action in work, it’s mostly “Saw food, like food, eat food.”If I’m going fishing right now, lousy weather, wrong side of a cold front, and some big gorilla lookin’ fella has already said if I don’t catch a fish he’s going to beat me up?Not gunna happen, peewee. Bring friends. Lots of ‘em.Stop at the creek on the way, toss the cast net a couple times, get a few shiners, maybe panfish to get a few small bluegills or other panfish.Go to the river (catfish) or lake (bass, big panfish, etc.)Succeed.Live bait, even just a worm, works for you. It’s not as entertaining or interactive as lure fishing where you’re imparting the movement and “life” to it, but cast for cast, unless it’s somebody fishing bass beds in spring, I can outperform them with live bait. (Bed fishing, meh. Not too hard to catch a fish that’s 100% in territorial attack-all-intruders mode.) A hand-size bluegill that got himself stranded out in the middle of the channel, it’s what catfish actively seek out. Same with a big ol’ shiner stranded in the weeds, bass live their whole lives hoping to get that lucky. Classical “You came to the wrong neighborhood” situation. The fish don’t know what kind of rod and reel you have, and they don’t care. It’s like asking “What kind of engine was in the truck that delivered the last load to the grocery store?” it might be fun to know, but it doesn’t matter and it never crosses your mind. You don’t sit at the table, take a big ol’ bite of supper and go “Oooh, Cummins Diesel brought this one! My favorite!”Bait, presentation, patience. That’s what fishing is about. Most fishing gear is designed to target only one species; Hominina Homo Sapiens, aka us. Part the big spender from their money because they heard “you get what you pay for” and they think if they pay enough the fish will surrender without struggle to their excellence. That’s not how it works, but that’s the way consumerism has programmed people to think it works.200 years ago, somebody going fishing would take a glorified stick, some horsehair line, a hook, and some worms. 200 before that, they wouldn’t have even had the stick. 200 before they, they wouldn’t have even had the line or the hooks…and they still caught supper readily. For me, I’ve yet to have a fish I caught ask what kind of reel I caught him with, nor have I sensed any shame or embarrassment when the fish realized I wasn’t using a Lunker Hunter 5000000 Ted Slayum Signature series rod and reel.Think less, fish more, and don’t let some goofus online make you think you need a thousand dollar rod and reel to catch the same fishes people have been catching for eons with nothing but the simplest possible methods.

Is there any compelling reason in the foreseeable future for most of us to buy an Apple Watch or similar competitor?

Compelling? No. But I do like my Apple Watch for many reasons that have been detailed by others with a couple additions. I don't like feeling like I have to wear the Apple Watch all the time at the expense of my other normal watches. What I like:Notifications: It seems silly but moving notifications to your wrist is nice. You can give them a quick glance and only need to get your cell phone if something is important. A nice feature is that you don't have to look at notifications immediately. They store themselves on the watch and with a quick down swipe you can look at them so you aren't constantly looking at your watch if you don't want to. My company makes me password protect my phone so I particularly like this so I don't constantly have to type in my password to see notifications/emails.Notifications #2 Texts: I particularly like getting texts on my wrist. The length of most texts makes reading them on the watch very convenient and responding on the watch is easy. There are a few pre-loaded responses you can choose or you can dictate a short response without looking like too much of a geek.Fitness Tracking: The fitness tracking is nice to have as long as you are wearing a watch anyhow. Personally I'd prefer that the fitness application tracked steps as this is pretty standard on fitness devices and a good goal that you can relate to.Reminders: This is a super nice feature that I use all of the time. Turn your wrist and say "Hey Siri" then ask Siri to time something for you or remind you at a certain time to do something. A nice soft vibration reminds you of whatever you asked for. It's super nice for someone forgetful like me.Directions: This is surprisingly nice to have on your watch face. If you are driving in the car its really nice to get the reminder of a turn coming up with a vibration on your wrist so you aren't distracted looking at an app on your phone. It's easy, and feels safer, to give a quick look at your wrist for a quick left/right turn signal. It's really nice to use the watch for walking directions in a congested city like NYC. Again, you don't have to look down at a phone while you are walking which is unsafe and generally not a good practice to stare down at your phone while walking in a big city. You just walk and when your watch vibrates you give it a quick look and it tells you where/when to turn.Scores: Score mobile integrates nicely into the watch and I can see the scores of games/teams I care about easily on the watch.Golf: I love using the watch for a range finder. I use the GolfLogix app which is great on the Apple Watch. It tells me distances and lets me put in my score and other features that I frankly don't use. The only disappointment is that I couldn't find a free app to use that integrated with the watch. I previously used a free version of GolfLogix on my iPhone with less features but I really only want to know the distance to the green. I had to pay about $20 (annually) to get the version that integrates with the watch. But its so much easier to use than having to fish an iPhone out of your pocket and putting in the password etc. What I don't like:Other Watches: I'm a watch guy. I like watches and have worn them all my life. I have other watches that I would like to wear. To take full advantage of the Apple Watch you should wear it all the time (especially for the fitness tracker) but I like wearing my other watches.Telling time: The watch, of course, tells time great but the one glitch is that you need to tilt your wrist towards you to turn the screen on or tap it. You can't just glance down at the watch to see the time. I'm not sure how to fix this but I would like to see the time on my watch at a glace. And...it's fairly obvious when you are looking at the time so you need to be careful of appearing rude.Would I buy it again? I do like it but...given the fact that I like to wear my other watches I have thought that I might have been better off buying a fitness tracker and a golf range finding watch. I could have bought both for less than the cost of my watch and the range finding watches don't have an annual fee. I would miss some of the functionality of the watch. I'm conflicted.
