I am currently dating a very beautiful half Mexican half Pakistani girl. My family had believed that she was just Mexican and would always make jokes about it. (My family is white, very white) one day I had decided to inform them that's she wasn't 100% Mexican. Her father had been born and raised in Pakistan and that she was infact half Pakistani. My wedding was called off last week. One day after the Roka Ceremony.It is such a relief to me and my family. The guy was super nice to me, earned decently and also a gentleman so we proceeded but the ideologies and thinking of our families were a clear mismatch. My family is very open minded and progressive in nature. I am close to 30 but my parents don't give any importance to the people when they question my still being not married. They only want me to be happy. On the other hand the guys family thoughts were not on the same lines. They kept me in the last priority and gave primary importance to pleasing their relatives. They forced us to give expensive gifts to each and every family members of his side. They forced us to bear majority of the expenses of the wedding. They did not even bother to visit our home town once. All the functions right from roka(similar to engagement) to the wedding were to be held at their place.All the dates, venue, rituals etc were decided by them. Only contribution my parents had was to finance the wedding. When my mom opposed to all this it led to a huge quarrel between the families. Finally my father went ahead and aplogized saying that my mom was just speaking passionately while she was keeping her points in front of his family which might have seemed louder and rude. So, finally both families agreed for the ceremony of roka.I was not present when the fight happened between the families. So, it was difficult for me to understand whose mistake it was . I was considering everyone's point of view. I have started getting second thoughts about the guy and specially about his family.A day after Roka function he and his family again got angry. The guy messaged me saying that his family is extremely annoyed because according to them the presentation of my family was bad, and the gifts were not as per the expectations which is extremely unpleasant and disrespectful to all of their family members. They again wanted my parents to apologize for this. That was the point where I lost all my respect for the guy and his family. And finally my marriage was called off. My parents and brother are extremely happy that I got rescued from such family.A girl and boy deserve equal respect and so do both their families during wedding. No party should dominate the other. If that is the case girls, you need to take a step back. You can't compromise on your or your parents respect just because you want to change your marital status.
