Learning how to “appreciate art" is in itself an odd term for me.But I guess it will have to do. You are learning to know more about art and how to look at it and make more informed responses to it. Then you can appreciate it. Or like it. Or…not.Here's an example. Opera? I don't get it. It's in a foreign language. The voices are incredible but what's going on their with the costumes and the passion? I don't know. I never learned it. Its very loud and dramatic. People who love it seem pretentious in a way to me.Then recently I went to see the movie documentary: “Pavoratti”.Pavoratti did a movie in the 80s, called “Yes Giorgio" (not a sucessful film) that brought him to Boston. He sang on the BU Bridge. Half a million people showed up on a work day to hear it live. I was one of them. I respect greatness and wanted to hear it. Our city trembled and shook with his voice over sound systems on a sunny afternoon. I heard Pavoratti live! I did not see him. I still didnt get it. But it was beyond impressive and unforgettable. (Kind of what people call a “God Moment”).Now, with the documentary movie, I understand something more. A lot more. I could come to like it. It's a beautiful movie that you can see now in theaters or maybe tv. I learned background information about opera, greatness, destiny, determination and peresrverance by one born to be the greatest among great.Quora readers: It all about interpreting, inhabiting the story. The voice is the vehicle. STORY.I also learned that a “tenor" was not a natural voice range. It has to be cultivated and invented.You either appreciate something or you don't. What really clicked was hearing that piece that they played in a Sienfeld episode about the group of them having Opera tickets, (groan) tuxedos and Elaine’s newly deranged boyfriend dressed as the clown, scaring Kramer out of his ticket. That was one of the funniest shows I ever saw. Now I know what the operatic music was at the end! The Tragic Clown! I so appreciated knowing that! The show….even better! Every time I see a clown or image, that music comes to me. And due to the extrordinary writing of that show, I laugh! Which is also funny. Because the clown is miserable and not funny. Layers of experience!Appreciating is learning and organically coming to like something.You dont have to like things because you/they think you should. They say you need to aquire a taste. All the varieties of whisky in the world will not make me like the taste of whisky. I can not appreciate the work of some artists. No reason needed, but usually they bore me.Learn about art in a fun, free way if you can. I think good movies about art and artists can help to let the process in without being lectured to. It takes a very special person to teach about the background of visual art well to the curious.Remember, learning is a slow and deep process. It takes time. Be open and patient. Start with something you like/love and build your knowledge from there. Don't doubt your senses. You dont have to respond positively to what you see. There are no rules. No one need agree.So many people ask questions here on Quora about Picasso as if he took us all for a ride with his childlike paintings and yeah, what makes him so great? It saddens me. Its a perfect example of the way education fails us. No reproduction could reproduce the vivid, exteme colors under the sun that were portayed in some of these works. I didnt even know such colors could be painted.Keep looking for something that really moves you. You'll be surprised. Research that work. Find out why you responded to it.Open your hearts and mind to the creative spirit and leave your worries about intellect behind. Learning is enlightening. Promise to have fun.Artists do not make art to make you feel stupid or inferior. Believe that. Nor is it a riddle or puzzle for you to figure out. The way it makes you feel is correct. And that can and will change with your experiences.
