Update - 4/18/2021:My son’s artwork was selected to be shown in the school district’s annual fine art festival. Since he’s not speaking we had no idea what to expect. We walked in to view it and he pointed it out to us. I couldn’t hold back the tears! I might be biased, but I think that’s pretty snazzy for a kindergartner!Honestly, it was yesterday. After watching the video playback in front of my family, I burst into happy tears. My son is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum. He lost his language by 18 months of age. He lost interest in many things then, too. Thanks to lots of therapy and school and a mother who always believes in him, he is living a fulfilling life with lots of happy memories. We have our struggles and bumps along the way, but there is so much joy that those just feel like tiny hiccups.Yesterday was his fifth birthday. It was a truly magical day that I will never forget as long as I live.When he woke up, I sang happy birthday to him. I knew in my heart for the first time ever that he fully understood and knew that it was his birthday. His smile was radiant, and made my heart beam with pride and love for him. I took him with me to the store to pick up his birthday cake that I ordered for him. I sat him in the cart like I always do. Life doesn’t stop just because there’s a pandemic sweeping the globe. This was a milestone in our lives together worthy of celebration. And actually, it worked out wonderfully being at home together, just the five of us to celebrate him. He loves to be home where he feels safe.I let him open his first present when he woke up, this suit and shoes. He LOVED it. He absolutely loves to dress up and I love seeing him dressed up! He kept checking his tie and it was so adorable.I planned a Slip N Slide for outside for my kids to play in, then he had his little “spa day” with a supersized galaxy bath bomb afterwards. And dinner followed by singing to him and his cake…which he refused to let us cut but that’s perfectly okay.My son has never once cared about a birthday. Ever. When we’ve tried to sing to him it’s been too much for him to handle and we understand and don’t force the issue. I’ve gone out of my way trying to make things special only for him to be completely disinterested.But this year, oh, he knew it was his special day.That silly and sweet little boy made us sing to him nine times so he could keep blowing out his candle! And he’s never once blown out a candle before or even attempted to. It was honestly one of the most beautiful days of my entire life. And to see how far he’s come makes me know that he will be just fine. I’ve always believed that when someone believes in you, you can go really far in life. Bullshit is so common that it’s become the normal state of affairs. People talk about US politics being “post truth” or “post fact”, but programming has been like that for years.We see lots of questions, answers and comments about “Why are Macs and Linux more popular with programmers?”. A quick Google will tell you that they are not, and Windows outnumbers both combined:Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2016 ResultsYet you will find countless answers explaining why Macs are most popular among developers, even though statistics will tell you Windows has around double the programmers working with it.It’s the same for “Java is dying”, forget that it grew in use more than any other language a year ago, yes, let’s forget that. Forget that there are more jobs out there for Java than any other language, yes, let’s leave that to one side. Or Java is old, yes, let’s just not bother to put an actual number to what constitutes “old” and just stick with the ultra-vague “old”. Put a number of years to what we mean by “old” and it’s amazing how many languages are “old”.Same for FP replacing OOP, anyone who has written actual real software knows that it’s total bullshit, it’s just not happening.Same for programming languages being described as “elegant” or “expressive”, it’s just weasel words to get away from not actually having any real answers.It’s the same thing for “x is slow” or “x is unreliable”, or “x is insecure”, back it up with evidence or GTFO.The bullshit around accessories is annoying too, mechanical keyboards are nothing to do with programming. They’re about typing, the keyboard doesn’t care if you’re writing Python or an erotic novel.The industry is drowning in bullshit (actually, no, it’s drowned), vast amounts of the stuff you read on Quora, and elsewhere, is just made up, it’s fictional, and easily disproved by 2 minutes on Google.Bloody hell, I need a spa day.
