PDF Editor FAQ

What rations or meals are provided for aircrew aboard B-52 bombers on long duration USAF flights? Similar to MREs, airline meal trays, or something in between?

When I was active duty, aircrews drew flight meals from the chow hall (DFAC). They would draw enough meals to last the flight or the next landing site.At least some chow halls would prepare meals to request. As most aircraft had no way of heating/cooking food in those days ( may still be true) the meals were generally in the form of box lunches.

If I went to prison and my prison sentence wasn't very long is there a way to request solitary confinement?

Well, as a former Corrections Officer, I can only speak for the facility I worked for. I used to work in the Special Housing Unit (SHU or essentially solitary) for about 2 years. From my experience, there are a few ways to earn a ticket to the SHU.1. Request protective custody. Pro- you go the SHU quickly. Con- you will be labeled as a snitch by general population. Usually will get sent to a PC dorm.2. State you are suicidal. Pro- you will go to the SHU quickly. You will be in the SHU for as long as you want if you know what to yell mental health professionals. Con- you will have nothing in your room except for a safety smock. It will suck, since you’re on suicide precautions you won’t have a mat, or a blanket, or canteen, or regular meals, or privacy. Oh, and if you’re uncooperative, you may earn a ticket to ride the Emergency Restraint Chair for 4 hours.3. Be uncooperative/combative toward staff or fight another inmate. Pro- you will go to the SHU quickly. You may earn respect? Kinda depends on the population of the dorm. Con- fighting staff could earn you additional charges, or take away good time or whatever. Fighting inmates could be not advisable as well, if you’re in a linear supervision unit (cell block without an officer post and just a patrol outside of the actual block) you could really get messed up by somebody and CO’s may not find you immediately. My honest opinion, general population is usually not as bad as movies and tv shows make it seem. Especially podular units with direct supervision (officer in unit). When I was working pods or open bays, I was fair, firm and consistent. the pods I worked in it was free time from 0630–0900, 1100- 1500 count, and 1500–2300 count then lockdown 2300- 0630. During free time you were able to go outside, watch tv, exercise, eat canteen, take showers, whatever really. If you like to have a bit of freedom with some responsibility, general population is for you. If you enjoy being micromanaged with no responsibilities, the SHU is for you.The SHU is normally a 23 and 1 system. At my facility if you were on the low side (room number wise 1–12 out of 4 wings) you received showers Monday Wednesday and Friday, when the officers decide to do them usually 2300–0200. Then Tuesday Thursday and Saturday you would get an hour of “recreation” you could either go outside and walk around in a box, make a phone call, or sit at a table whenever the officers decide to start rec. you will be by yourself and you will have a ‘quickset’ (handcuffed and leg ironed with a security chain attaching the two) the entire time. You do not get canteen items, you only get breakfast lunch and dinner meals. If you’re on suicide watch, you may not get rec and you will be on 15 minute checks, which means an officer will probably knock on your window every 15 minutes to make sure you’re alive. Also you will only get pb&j sandwiches or cheese sandwiches if you’re allergic to pb. Also, if somebody floods their cell, you will probably get toilet water in your room, if your neighbor is kicking the door, it will echo and shake your metal room fixtures. Not to mention the officers will activate a cell extraction team to place your friendly neighbor into the relaxing emergency restraint chair to prevent him from injuring his poor foot. Oh, and if that neighbor decides to fight? They will just use OC spray which will make you cough if you’re not accustomed to it. And, usually people in the SHU will yell to communicate with neighbors across the hall or talk through the vents. Also, your window is shut at all times unless and Officer is doing a guard tour, and all you can see is your white block walls and your steel grey bed, desk and toilet. Oh and to prevent graffiti, you can’t have pens or pencils in your cell. Then it can just take one PoS officer that got bullied as a kid to just ruin your day. They could kick your steel door or slam your window flap closed or whatever. And what recourse do you have? Oh nothing, because odds are the shift supervisor does a patrol down there, but they either do it so early/late that you’re probably asleep or they don’t answer your questions because the 40 people before you were asking stupid questions like “what is my release date?” or “what are my charges?” Or my favorite, “why am I down here?” For the 50th time. So guess what? You must request that same officer a 502 request form to fill out and report him? Yeah, the SHU is ass backwards and is not for everyone. There is more, but ive already wrote a book. I worked it for 2 years, it could be fine, it won’t break you unless you allow it to, but it will piss you off. Finally, honestly, I mean this in the best way possible. Just man up and try General Population, it really is not that bad, and usually if you are sentenced as a non-violent offender, you can start working and make your time go by quicker than sitting in the SHU. Good luck bud, hopefully everything turns out well for you.

What is it like to attend the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting in Omaha, Nebraska?

It’s a bit like going to a rock concert without the music or the weird clothes and people. Instead, you have maybe 50,000 fairly normal, every day people, mostly of middle age, attending the actual shareholder meeting and a number of related events both before and afterwards. The shareholder meeting is held on Saturday in an arena not quite big enough for all of the attendees (who must be stockholders or their guests). Some get up as early as 3–4am to get an early spot in line. (My wife and I have usually gotten there by about 6am because the better parking options are gone by about 6:30. When we do we’re well back in the line - but plenty of people come in later than we do and we usually find a reasonable seat. It helps to have been there once before so you know the layout of the facility and can rush to your favorite seating area before it fills up.)They open the doors at 8am and everyone runs in and tries to get a good seat. Imagine a basketball arena with a big stage at one end - that’s the general shape of the venue. Warren and Charlie Munger and various individuals chosen to ask questions sit on the stage and the audience sits in the seats around the arena (on two levels) or on the main floor. (They broadcast it on the internet, live, so you can actually watch the stockholders meeting and get a general idea, but they don’t show much of the audience.)Those who don’t get seats in the arena may sit in an overflow room and see it all on video. The program for the stockholders meeting starts with a movie at 8:30 (essentially, a humorous ode to the Berkshire Hathaway company) and then a Q&A session from 9-noon and 1–3 or so and then a formal stockholders’ meeting that lasts about 15 minutes. Audience members and the experts on stage alternate in asking questions, which are answered by Warren and Charlie. Members of the board of directors of Berkshire Hathaway sit in the front rows of the main floor, so you will see people like Bill Gates being introduced at the beginning.Adjacent to the arena is an event center that has a large exhibit hall, featuring exhibits from most of the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary companies (several dozen of them, ranging from Dairy Queen to Fruit of the Loom to Sees Candy to the BNSF Railroad). People visit the exhibit hall the afternoon before the stockholders meeting as well as during and after the meeting. They are usually selling products at a small discount and sometimes have special editions of some products that are only available at the event. For example, I once bought a pair of Brooks running shoes with a picture of Warren printed on the side.Lunch is usually mostly fast food from vendors around the arena, although you can also purchase a prepared box lunch and a few nearby hotels offer a somewhat nicer lunch option (but reservations must be made far in advance). Before and after the meeting they have special shareholder events at various local hotels and stores that are part of the Berkshire Hathaway company (such as a shareholders sale at Borsheim’s Jewelers on Friday afternoon and evening and a shareholder sale and barbecue at Nebraska Furniture Mart. All of these events tend to be crowded, but if the weather is nice they can be fun. Occasionally, Warren will actually act as a salesperson at some of these events.I would describe it as a worthwhile experience, at least once, if you want to hear Warren and Charlie opining on various issues of the day and how they might relate to Berkshire Hathaway’s fortunes. We attended for about five years, but after a year when it was cold and rainy and we stood in many lines in that inclement weather, we decided we had seen it enough. If you want to go you can get credentials (which you wear around your neck so you are easy to spot) by sending in a request form that you get as part of your annual report from Berkshire Hathaway (you must be a stockholder). Each stockholder may obtain credentials for up to 3 guests, usually a spouse and perhaps friends or family members. Hotel reservations must be made well in advance and we found better luck at hotels across the river in western Iowa than in the Omaha hotels. Ditto for restaurant reservations if you want someplace nice (especially for lunch on Saturday).A few other tips. You will want a way to save your seats when you go to lunch, or someone make take them while you are gone. My wife and I just brought T-shirts and placed them over the backs of our chairs, and that worked well. There is covered parking adjacent to the arena (you enter it from the South side), but it fills up by 6:30am or earlier if it’s raining. There’s uncovered parking on the North and East sides, beyond the exhibit hall. There are a few breakfast items available free of charge in the arena area, but most people eat breakfast before they come. Airline and hotel reservations must be made as much as a year in advance, although most won’t let you make them more than a year in advance. You learn a few interesting things about the Omaha area. For example, although Iowa is on the East side of the river and Nebraska is on the West side, there’s a tiny enclave on the West side between the airport and the exhibit hall that is, technically, part of Iowa.
