PDF Editor FAQ

How do I take admission in a mass communication undergraduate program, and at which college?

Ultimately, admission to a MassComm program isn’t any different than other programs-generally speaking. You want to have good grades, a good test score (if the school you want prefers one over the other, be sure to take that one even if you’ve already taken the other. Usually though, they are fine with either). Have some extra curriculars and be a good writer, especially if there are entrance essays. Then, as you fill out your applications be sure to put Mass Comm as your major. They’ll have you decide your focus later on, usually by the end of your freshman year. If you’re like me, and you come in with a lot of credits, they might have you choose in your first semester. If you are early enough in high school, I would definitely suggest taking AP English classes so that you can go straight into the Mass Media writing. It’s not a big deal, though, if you don’t take the AP classes. Most schools now require a minor for most majors, so I would also suggest thinking about that. Think about what you want to do with your degree in the future, and that will help you pick a minor or two. I picked Graphic Design and Spanish because I wanted to travel and work with magazines and photography, and eventually teach. If you want to cover politics for a national news source, I would look into a PoliCom minor. If you want to help with science journals, a biology or chemistry minor might be better. If you plan to go into PR, policom might be good, or business. As for schools, a lot of schools have recently changed from having the various forms of mass communication in separate degrees to the MCOM. This, in my opinion, is a good thing as media continues to rapidly change. I focused on Multimedia Journalism. So I have the skills to write, photograph, and shoot video, but because it’s under the umbrella of Mass Communication, I also am trained in various PR specific skills (though not as much as those on the PR track). You want to look at schools that have a good graduate record, a wide spread of graduates, small class sizes, and an emphasis on ethics. You can usually get a copy of each majors degree plan on the website, and you can always email for more information.I am about to graduate from UT Tyler, I think it is an awesome school. We are most well known for our nursing and engineering programs, but our Mass Comm program is incredible. It’s small, but we have great professors and do a lot of hands on training. In a class last semester, I had to go out and put a news package together serveral times in about one hour. So, it’s a school to check out.Generally, the schools that will have the best Mass Comm programs are along the coasts and in bigger cities. Arizona has some great programs, as do Illinois and Michigan. You also can start out in a junior college and transfer. If the college is linked to a university, they will likely also have Mass Comm. If it isn’t linked, it’s more likely the junior college with have a journalism program but that should transfer well to any university in state. Also, google “best mass Comm programs” and you should get a lot of information.
