When I was a Computer Science student in college, my COBOL professor was amused by how I was using the university computer to create poetry and graphics, and he offered me a job as a clerk in a computer store he owned with a couple of other professors.The year was 1979, just at the start of the home computer industry, and some of the very first game publishers in the Los Angeles area bought their Apple computers at that store. One of them, the owner of a start-up called Edu-Ware services, asked me if I’d be interested in writing some games for him to publish. I wound up developing three: Space II, a science fiction role-playing game; Windfall, an oil crisis simulation; and Network, a simulation of running a television network.When I graduated, he hired me full-time as a game designer and programmer. Originally, there were just four of us working out of his apartment, but we soon became successful, and after a couple of years, we were 50 people in an office building, with me being the Vice President of Product Development. The two biggest games I developed at this time were The Prisoner, an adventure game based on the surreal Patrick McGoohan television series, and Empire I: World Builders, a remake of Space II that won Electronic Games Magazine’s Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Game of the Year award.In our fourth year, we sold our company to an accounting software company based in Atlanta, but not understanding the home market, they drove our educational and entertainment software company out of business within 12 months.Four of us Edu-Ware employees got together and formed a new company, Electric Transit, and focused on making 3-D simulation games. We became Electronic Arts first affiliated label publisher, but with us being the first, EA made all their mistakes with us, and two years later, that company too was out of business.I then joined the Walt Disney Company as its first videogame producer, from there I eventually went on to work as a producer or director at Cyberdreams, 3DO, Activision, and the Spinmaster toy company, as well as working at few small game studios. Now, approaching my 40th year working in the game industry, I focus on teaching and consulting.
