I figured I’d hop on here and share some more reasonable stats, for those of us who aren’t super brainiacs!PERSONAL STATS: African American/White, femaleSCHOOL TYPE: I actually went to two different schools, one of which is private. They didn’t allow us to take APs freshman year, and only one sophomore year, which contirubuted to my low GPA. They put me back a year in math, and forced me to take an online math class in place of a real math class simply because I was an outsider to them. There was no educational reason for it, except for the fact that they didn’t understand what my math class in 8th grade was. (this school was so sheltered and disconnected from the world outside) They never send students to IVYs and get maybe 1 kid a year who goes to a T20, but those kids have parents who are so rich I’m sure something was fishy. I transferred to a poor public school that wasn’t competitive at all, and while the overall education was significantly better, there was little help and no advising for students who wanted to aim higher than the local community college. Quite a few teacher’s teaching reflected the idea that we were all bound for the CC.GPA: 4.12 W, 3.78 UWCLASS RANK: 37 out of 370 (10%)SAT: 1300, 20 on writing & 1220, 22 on writing for a superscore of 1300 and 22APs: World History (5), United States History (4), Calc BC (2020), Biology (2020), and United States Government & Politics (2020)EXTRACURRICULARS:2 Years of Training special needs judo players6 years of judo, green belt (i know, it’s kind of bad considering how long i’ve been in lol) 3 national placementsNSLIY semifinalistPathfinder club leader, and member for 7 yearsChurch Lead Team member: I helped the youth pastor plan meetings, and served as the branch between the public school and the church as most kids come from the attached private school. This is one of, if not thee, largest Adventist church, and is known internationally. I also helped join the youth pastor search committee, and helped the new pastor accustomed to everything.2 Years of California Cadet Corps, and was a First Sergeant (unheard of for a second year cadet, but my commandant liked my “Big Boy Voice” or my angry military style voice and it works well on the cadets. I have the highest GPA out of all the seniors in CCC so that was a big help too)LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:One from my church’s head pastor, I’ve worked with her a long time and she knows me wellOne from my Head judo coach, who is also a Lead Detective with our police departmentOne from my favorite judo coach, who knows me incredibly well and helped me return to training after a concussion and a rib injury. He also is in charge of the special needs training.One from my AP Biology teacher (this ended up being a mistake, at the time he was a good teacher but as the year went on it became clear that he has no idea how to teach AP and all of us are now scrambling because we’re incredibly behind where we should be)One from my Anatomy teacher, I had the highest grade in all her classes at the time, so she was impressed with meOne from my guidance counselor (we hate each other so I didn’t send hers anywhere)Finally, the part you all came here for. I applied for PUBLIC HEALTH, HUMAN BIOLOGY, CANCER BIOLOGY, LIBERAL STUDIES CORE (NYU) or BIOLOGY depending on which one each school had. This season was incredibly disappointing, and was super frustrating because the FAFSA bit me in the ass and somehow thinks my parents can afford 53k a year in tuition. Right now I can’t afford college IN THE LEAST, and my parents are refusing to pay for anything because they think I should’ve joined the military. Surprise surprise, I already tried! I got rejected by every recruiter because of a thyroid condition and mental health issues, even though I scored a 90 on the ASVAB! I realize I shouldn’t have applied to such prestigious schools, but they’re honestly the only ones I’ve heard of. I didn’t have any help in my college search and no way to tour schools either. I’ll most likely be taking out fat loans, so could any adult please offer me some advice? I’m literally on my own for this and colleges do not care at all. I’ll hopefully be attending UCI in the fall, IF i can get my parents to pay the $250 registration fee. If any of you have any help you can offer, please leave some tips in the comments.

I think I can be of assistance to this question because I just graduated from Spelman last week!As a freshman, come in with a game plan. Even if you do not know exactly what you want to do upon graduation, make sure you know what you DO NOT want to do. Freshman year is all about acclamation and learning. But do not let the newness of college distract you from your end goal. If I could go back in time, I would create a game plan that consists of goals for each semester : Join a certain amount of clubs, take at least 5 classes (minimum), attend at least 3 parties (even if you don't like parties ( its a random way to make great memories and even greater friends)), make it a point to go to the gym at least twice a week (free classes/personal trainers), make time everyday to study or review, talk to the girls you think you have nothing in common with, be whoever you want to be(because you literally can be whoever you want, even if its totally different from your high school self), go to off-campus events (festivals, concerts), study abroad (so many easy scholarships) …etc. Thats a huge hack. Just be organized.Academic hacks in my opinion are meet with your advisor at the beginning of every semester, and share your game plan with her! Tell her you want to graduate early (Saves money, time, and it felt awesome to have a free semester upon graduation). Your advisor will map out a plan for you. Stay focused on that plan. Make it a POINT to meet upperclassmen in your major. They will most likely still have old assignments/test/quizzes/textbooks. ALWAYS make it a point to speak in class everyday even if you're asking a question you already know the answer to. Your professors do care, and make sure you're memorable (You WILL need a letter of recommendation one day). Work smarter, and harder. Try to be he best at everything. You'll feel so good to graduate with Latin Honors among other distinctions. Plus, a high GPA opens doors to better jobs ( Certain internships only look for students with 3.5+ GPA’s. Those are the internships that pay $25/hour + and will secure you a great full-time job after graduation)Social hacks: Follow every spelman/morehouse/clark person you see on social media. You'll feel in-touch with all three schools that way. Friends come and go. Cherish your friendships, but if your homegirl is acting up, let her go!!! Stay busy, stay true to yourself, call your parents ( your relationships with your parents will become stronger because of the distance believe it or not. Me and my mom are so much closer because I would share every detail with her because I wanted her to trust me and she was too far away to punish me, and its always good to have someone to call on). If you get homework question you need help with, copy and paste it on google search, 7/10 the entire answer and other questions and answers will pop up online. Dont feel pressured to join a sorority, if its for you, it will happen naturally (Im a living example). Go out!! Dont be a hermit. Depression is real. Check on your friends. Have safe sex ALWAYS. People lie about their past (and their present). Be in a pageant.Work hacks: Join handshake IMMEDIATELY. Apply to be in FRESH Immediately! Get resume help. Do mock interviews. I have friends that secured 80K salary jobs while they were juniors because of these tips. Network, Network, Network!! Spelman alumna will do anything for you and I mean that.
