Should I apply to UMSL or Saint Louis University?

I received my Bachelors degree from UMSL and my Masters from St. Louis University. I also worked on my doctorate at Saint Louis University. To be perfectly frank, I very much enjoyed both schools.According to the 2020 Missouri University Rankings, St, Louis University is #4 and UMSL is #6.To see the list check out: https://www.4icu.org/us/missouri/UMSL Pushed Me AcademicallyEven though UMSL was where I received my undergraduate program, I felt I was pushed very hard academically.I had to work very hard to maintain my position on the Deans List.Although at times it was challenging to combine a heavy course load with my part time job pressures, I always felt I received a top notch education at UMSL.More about UMSL: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/umsl-2519UMSL Campus Covers A Large TerritoryUMSL is spread across 470 acres in suburban St. Louis County.Initially I felt uncomfortable on the UMSL campus because it is very large and covers a lot of territory.Founded in 1963, it was built on the site of a former country club which had lots of land.At times I was walking miles from my car to the various buildings where my classes were held because the campus is spread out over a very large area of land.Commuter Students Are In The MajorityThe vast majority of students at UMSL, when I attended school there, did not live on or adjacent to campus and were day commuters. This has changed over the years. As of 2016 the number of On Campus Students (10, 848) outranked Off Campus students (6,141)When I attended UMSL, commuter students don’t tend to hang around as much after classes since they often work part or full time to pay for their tuition.Which is exactly what I did.Very Large Lecture Style ClassesMy parents could not help me with my college tuition, so I worked one or more jobs to pay my own way. Some of the lecture style classes were huge. Over the years UMSL has worked hard to offer much smaller classes and has been very successful with this goal. When I attended, the classes were still quite large. It was difficult, at least in my case, to make strong connections and friendships when surrounded by throngs of other students.Greek Life Gave Me A Sense Of BelongingI did find after I was rushed by an UMSL sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, that I really started to enjoy my time on campus.Greek life is not for everyone, but it was a great option for me.Besides feeling a sense of connection, my time in a Greek sorority really helped me succeed in my classes.Alpha Xi Delta placed great value on learning, study and grades. I excelled with the constant academic encouragement of my sisters.See: Sorority Hair: Memories Of Alpha Xi DeltaIf you don’t want to commit to a sorority or fraternity, there are some interesting special interest clubs you could join instead.St. Louis University Has A Different EnergySaint Louis University (SLU) is a private institution that was founded in 1818. It is located not far from downtown St. Louis. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 7,454, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 286 acres.Even though I primarily attended St. Louis University at night and on weekends, I immediately felt much more comfortable on the campus.Maybe it was because I was a grad student and the classes I took were very small.Or possibly it was because the professors made a point of actively working with the students and getting to know them. It’s not that UMSL professors were aloof or uninterested, it was just that the classes were a lot larger and there were more students vying for attention. My Masters degree which took two years and required a thesis, cost me almost 4xs what my four years at UMSL cost.Note: As of 2017 UMSL had a net cost of $9,969/yr while SLU had an average cost of $33,812/yr.For more info: 20 BEST VALUE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN MISSOURISt. Louis University is very generous with scholarships and student work opportunities. However, it is definitely a lot more expensive to attend.Luckily when I attended SLU I was working full time in my chosen career and I was given some incentives including a book reimbursement allowance and financial rewards for A grades. Those incentives helped me with my much higher tuition and book fees.Ultimate Career GoalsBoth schools are exceptional in their own right and offer great advantages. UMSl is generally a lot more affordable for commuter and part time students than SLU.Both schools offer internships in the St. Louis business and government related communities. While I was at UMSL I spent a year working as an intern for a government run agency. At SLU I was an intern working on a project for the City of St. Louis. Both universities offer on-campus living, Greek life and a vast number of special interest groups and clubs.Ultimately I think it all boils down to budget, future career goals and the types of degrees offered by the individual schools.SLU does offer a pre-med program but UMSL offers a great engineering and International Business program.Do Your HomeworkNot everyone feels comfortable in every university setting.I highly recommend spending time at both universities. Visit the student union building, check out the libraries and the parking.See: UMSL Visitors and Visit the St. Louis Campus : SLUIf you plan on living on-campsus, visit the dorms.Even though UMSL was very large and spread out, I found great peace hanging out and studying outside on one of the large hills where students would gather. At St. Louis University, I found the library to be my haven.Ultimately any university commitment takes a lot of thought. Give yourself time to consider all the pros and cons of both and then make your decision.Good luck to you.

What is the marketing communication mix strategy used in higher education?

You bet. Some examples:I will drive to my university today and on the way will pass a billboard that Saint Louis University has paid for that contains a “call to action” to prospective students: “Be a Billiken!”Our website (www.slu.edu) draws traffic from many segments for many different reasons. Let’s call this “inbound marketing.” If SLU is on top of its marketing communications game, then they regularly adjust this website and other communications for the purposes of Search Engine Optimization or Search Engine Marketing.Students who have applied and accepted may get “nudged” on Facebook to pay their deposit. Our President, Fred Pestello, has an lively Twitter presence. Follow him at SLUPresident. There are many, many more examples. But it general the modern university uses marketing communications mix to reach its students and many other stakeholders. They use it intensively for fundraising and enrollment management. As online education and blended instruction expands communications technology (included that harnessed to marketing) will also be used to deliver instruction.Teaching and communications are inextricably linked. It’s sell, not tell.

What is it like to fail the college entrance exam in the Philippines, especially the ACET, DCAT, USTET, and the UPCAT? What are the life paths of failed exam takers?

I used to be on the camp that believed that my school will define who I was going to be in my future career. Until I went abroad.I took all the entrance exams offered at major Metro Manila universities. I passed one test and the rest I either failed or was on the waiting list. I went to Baguio and saw Computer Science at SLU. It was a brand new course back then (1990s) and no entrance exam. So right then and there I enrolled. Two decades later am still a Computer Scientist and currently assisting the best and brightest in finding a cure to Cancer. Here in the US. nobody knows nor care what school I graduated from in the Philippines. All they care is that my grades and subjects matches and translates to their equivalency in the US school system. So don't be bothered about not passing those college entrance exams. Find a university in the provinces. It'll be cheap and life would be far less stressful compared to Metro Manila.Good luck.
