So let's see how the story unfolded...So you want to build an OS from scratch and want to know if it'll put you into an elite group of developers?TL;DR: Yes, you'll definitely be in the relatively unknown, rather rare species of human beings who knew how to even write an OS and the work it entails. If just knowing that for yourself makes you happy go for it. 99.9999% of the remaining humans won't really care.Building an OS from scratch is a mammoth effort. Let me use an analogy that I use often: Imagine that you wish to build a car from scratch. That is, you only buy every low level part you can get your hands on and nothing else. Everything else needs to be put together. For example:Now, you put all of this together to create a car that "runs" fine. That is a massive undertaking (and by no means doable in a single semester, IMHO :)So, now that you put the car together, you can show it off. Here are the reactions that you might get depending on who you show it off to:Regular Humans: (who have nothing to do with car design/mechanical engineering) - "Nice car! YOU put it all together? Wow!"Your nerd/geek friends: (who happen to be car enthusiasts and mechanical/automobile engineers):That's the expression you'll get when you tell them about your feat. No applications that could run on it (you could make it POSIX compatible, but still). Single developer/maintainer. Very remote chance of meeting Linus Torvalds and other OS creators (no OS-writer clubs unfortunately).So, you see, the cons outweigh the pros by a large margin. Yes, you'll learn a lot of complicated software development (that you may never use in your life again). But that's pretty much it. It won't put you in an elite group per se - brag rights have very low value here. Your knowledge about the system design (all the pros) definitely will and you can use that to your advantage when pursuing a job or starting your own company. But guess what, you don't have to write an OS to reach there!If you really wish to write an OS, first ask yourself what about the OS fascinates you. Do you wish to really write all memory management stuff yourself? Or do you like the scheduling bit? Threading perhaps? The Minix book actually has the ENTIRE code of the OS at the back (latter 50%) that is referenced in the book. The one by Maurice Bach, shows you the whole low level design/data structures of the UNIX OS, but not source code since it was proprietary at the time. The 3rd one talks about the design of the Linux kernel and helps you understand how a bare bones machine becomes a usable one (very dense).Every time you have questions of such massive undertaking, I'd suggest putting an economic spin on it. What's the value of doing it? Keep asking yourself "so-what" for every answer you get, till you hit an end goal. THAT'S when you'll know whether it is really worth it. IMHO, go design an OS if you wish, but be willing to let go of it if you've learnt enough (or if you're too tired).
