Make the requirements to vote in America a bit more stringentWhile I accept the premise that voting is a right in our form of government, I think it comes with a certain amount of self-responsibility to demonstrate that one is capable of making an informed choice at the ballot box. This might also make it harder for political ideologues and demagogues to sway uniformed voter, something that would be beneficial to the country.First, I would return the voting age to 21 for several reasons. One, is that at 18, the majority of people have had little to no life experience from which to adequately make good decisions on the issues that politicians put forth. Second, 18-year-olds are not biologically mature in the sense that the frontal lobe of the brain is still developing and does not reach full development until the early to mid-20s. This is important since the frontal lobe governs higher cognitive functions such as problem solving and reasoning, emotional and impulse control, as well as overall judgement. This is already mandated for alcohol purchases and many companies have the leeway to require a minimum ages for such things as car rental, hotel reservations, or certain jobs such as an Uber or Lyft driver.Second, I would require completion of a high school education and diploma, GED, or foreign equivalent (e.g. gymnasia), the latter in the case of immigrants. There is merit in the Jeffersonian ideal of an educated electorate. Our current system of a free and compulsory education to age 16 is outdated and rooted in 19th century society, which was an agrarian/industrial economy. As for free (the age limit that state must admit students by public/state law) most states already provide a free education up to age 21 and about 10 others up to age 20. As for compulsory (the age limit up to which students are required to attend school) the minimum is 16, with quite a few requiring students to be in school until age 17 or 18. In the 19th century if you could read and write and know some basic math, you could function well in the economy with an 8th grade education. Even up until the 1940s the majority of Americans did not finish high school but could find jobs in farms and factories that would enable a middle-class life style. For reasons other than voting we should up the age requirement for compulsory education in today’s economy. Changes to the right to vote would be another incentive to complete high school. But, back to the focus of completing high school in order to vote. Completing high school also means completing and passing American history. I do not know if it is still a requirement, but when I went to high school students had to pass both an exam on the US constitution and our state constitution in order to pass American history. And, you had to pass American history to get your high school diploma. Immigrants would be accommodated via their citizenship exam. Others could also go back to complete a GED should they wish to vote later in life. The only exception I might make is for people who have served honorably in the US military, but this point is somewhat moot as today’s military basically requires a high high school diploma or GED for enlistment.Third, convicted felons lose their right to vote do not get their voting rights automatically restored. People like that have already proven they are generally not fit to live in a civilized society. I was appalled to learn that in Maine and Vermont that felons do not lose their right to vote, even while in jail. In about half of the states, rights are automatically restored upon completion of jail, parole and probation. There should be a re-application process during which such convicts are evaluated and determined whether they are fit and rehabilitated to be able to again have access to the ballot box.I know I’ll get pushback on this, especially from leftist elements and certain minorities who will decry this as disproportionately disenfranchising minority populations and thus racist. No racism here. This is an ideal that I would like to see all American achieve, not only to be more informed voters, but to be more successful in an economy where more education is beneficial and jobs very limited for the uneducated. Yes, it is a sad fact that blacks and Hispanics complete high school at lower rates than whites (and Asians for that matter), but changing that would also bring more economic opportunity to those communities. And as far as the Left decrying that disenfranchising the less educated would affect Democratic voters, studies by the Pew Research Center show that Democrats have actually lost ground with that segment since the 1990s. In the last election 38% of voters with less than high school identified as Republican, while only 20% identified as Democrat. Also, given the fact that there a numerically many more whites than blacks in America, there are a lot more uneducated white folk than there are uneducated blacks.
