Ooh, that would be me.I took a temporary part-time job to earn some extra money, and the women I worked with invited me to the little potluck picnic they had every few months. I asked about food allergies or dietary restrictions, and what they liked to eat. They told me, “Oh we eat anything!” They said they were adventurous eaters and just loved to see my Facebook posts about dinner. So, I thought “This is my tribe!” and took my A-game to the picnic: my grandmother’s port and pistachio paté, tiny homemade pickles, and homemade multigrain crackers and a Sauternes. I also baked Portuguese milk tarts. It wasn’t until I went to set them down on the picnic table that I realized the terrible mistake I’d made. My food looked so strange next to the tubs of grocery store potato salad, pots of Kraft mac ’n’ cheese, and Subway sandwiches. No-one even tried any of the food I brought. Apparently their idea of “adventurous” was sprinkling paprika on the top of deviled eggs, or adding onions to their green beans. I felt pretty bad.

His nickname is Agni. His father is Italian and his mother is French.When sunlight touches Agni’s face his eyes turn ice blue. When he wears a green shirt, his eyes turn emerald green. When he walks under a shaded tree or gets a tan his eyes may be hazel or yellow or even turn a deep ocean blue.His eyebrows are almost blue black. That is the color of his thick hair, too. A lank of hair sometimes forms a half curl on his forehead.This coming November 2016, Agni will be 25 years old.We met in Paris when a friend in Sausalito, California, upon learning I would be spending a month in France gave me the name of his close friend, Arlene, who is living in Paris.It was through Arlene that I met Agni when she hosted a luncheon for him to celebrate his 17th birthday at the Cafe de Flore.When a person has charisma, males as well as females will acknowledge it. This is true for Agni. Anyone meeting him will recognize his charisma instantly.He radiates a power of perception through his senses. He is highly conscious, especially to the aesthetics of communicating verbally and nonverbally. Not only I, but everyone who is in his presence feel that our sensibilities are treated with care and with respect. We feel seen. We feel we matter to him.It goes beyond his manners. It goes beyond his resonant voice and French accent. We know by how he speaks to us that he will not inflict pain. He will instead choose words that make us feel pleasure. As a result, we trust him. We trust him with our feelings, with ourselves. We want to be with him. We want to give him our time and attention because he is oh, so worth it.He brings immense sensuality with him and he gives beauty and pleasure to us through his energy, his voice, and his actions. We actively gift him with things we know he will enjoy. Music. Home baked goodies. Beautiful sweaters. Love letters. Picnics. Invitations to movies, theaters, concerts. Sincere words of appreciation.He does not “suck up.” Why not? He does not use people for personal gain. Period. He is a giver, not a greedy taker. We respect him for that. We show our respect.Through the years, I have come to know how deep Agni’s sense of “self” runs through the core of his being, and at the same time, he is not egotistical. He knows himself and thinks things through. He has tremendous trust and confidence in himself because he tells himself the truth. If there is something he does not like in himself, he self-corrects quickly and with compassion. As a result we trust him more and more. We trust him with our vulnerabilities.His boundaries are strong. Even today, I continue to learn about my boundaries and how to set boundaries to work in my behalf through what he and I discuss.He does not destroy people, he enhances and champions us. We give him our loyalty.We love him back. Deeply. Passionately.So many of us appreciate him.
