What is the academic pressure and workload at East Carolina University like?

I recently graduated from ECU last year, go Pirates! I was excited to come across this question.. I got my degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. The academic pressure was quite strenuous in the CS program. I had a couple of professors who were under the impression that a C was a good score to receive as a student, when in reality a C would tank your GPA, resume, etc.. Many exams or quizzes had less than 5 questions so unless partial credit was given, one incorrect answer would crush your hopes and dreams. Taking courses other than CS to obtain my degree requirements, I found most other classes were easier from an expectation aspect. In general, I think ECU is about average difficulty wise for a college. It's up to you as the student to decide if you want to be an average student or if you want to excel in your program, which in turn will add a little pressure for you. ECU is a large public school with a stereotype, but there's still many highly successful people that have graduated from ECU. Certain degree programs may be easier than others. It's college, it's not meant to be easy, you're there to push yourself and to gain a skill set you can essentially sell to an employer. Treat it as a job, class/studying for 9 hours a day, it's sort of imperative considering the amount of money it costs to attend. Take advantage of all your resources and try to be one of the top students in all of your classes.ECU is an awesome school, it provided me a great college experience and allowed me to obtain a reputable degree.

How good is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Computer Science department for undergraduates?

I am answering this question not as a CS student but as a former internal recruiter who visited many schools in the area to recruit software developers out of school. Here was my impression of the major schools we recruited from in the area:UNC - Impressive and large program that offered both BS and MS degrees in CS. I had great experiences with their career services and professors and students coming out of the programs had solid practical programming experience, not just theoretical. Students got very high salaries coming out and it was competitive to hire them. Overall, this is a very good CS program.Elon - A fantastic CS program, especially considering it's a smaller, liberal arts University. I think the reason I had so much success recruiting great developers at Elon is that their classes are really small and their curriculum is highly practical rather than theoretical. Offers aren't as high or as competitive as UNC, but the students coming out of the school were better programmers. Their career services is also the best to work with.NC State - Huge program, also offers masters and PhD. They do a great job of hooking students up with local employers but their program is very theoretical. The students coming out of the program we're often disappointing in their programming abilities at first compared to other schools.Duke - Recruiting developers at Duke was largely a disappointment. Their students had high GPAs and looked impressive on paper but had poor practical skills and were unable to work as a team. At first I thought this was an anomaly but I have since worked at several companies with Duke CS grads with the exact same result. Their career services was very unorganized and difficult to work with from a recruiting perspective. I constantly got the feeling that they felt they didn't have to work to get their student's placed because they are 'Duke.'I didn't work as closely with ECU or UNC-W since I am based out of Raleigh, NC but I would peg those school's programs as similar to NC State in that they are large and tend to be more theoretical than practical. At the end of the day, all of these programs had some awesome candidates and all of them had some bad ones. What you put into your education is what you will get out of it, but this is my big picture opinion. Hope it helps!
