PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most infuriating plot hole in television or film?

There are two that come to mind right away, but there are probably more:One) Signs. How many cups do you own? Seriously, if you go to your cupboard right now and count all your glasses, how many do you own? How many do you actually need? If there is one adult and two children in your household, how many glasses do you think is sufficient? If one of the glasses is dirty what do you do with it? If all the glasses get dirty what do you do? If you know your child won’t take more than one sip from a cup, do you continue to fill the cup up beyond what she will drink? Do you continue to use glasses or do you start getting disposable/compostable cups? There are four people sharing the cups in my household and we have 12 cups. That is enough. If they get dirty we wash them. If they are all dirty we wash them. If for some reason one of the people in the house never took more than a sip or two from a water glass…well, actually that NEVER would have happened in my household. The parents would not have stood for that. But, in this hypothetical situation where that was allowed, the cup would only be filled as much as we would drink. And the cup would be emptied of whatever was left and cleaned. If it continued to be an issue, we wouldn’t buy more glasses. We might buy disposable cups. We would NOT continue to buy more and more glasses and then proceed to leave them half full ALL OVER THE HOUSE, on top of shelves and near/on electronics. We would NOT have accumulated dozens and dozens of these dirty glasses throughout the house. So, why in Signs is the ending totally dependent on this father not washing dishes or using common sense in regards to his daughter’s weird drinking habits? Yes, his wife died and he has to raise them alone. It sucks, but did he not co-parent prior to her death? Was he not at all aware of his kids needs and habits before his wife died? And she died six months prior, in six months as he really not come up with a better solution? She wasn’t a baby, either. She was old enough that she could WASH them herself, so the fact that he didn’t even have her take them to the sink doesn’t make sense. How did he let so many dirty dishes just accumulate in all corners of the house? I mean, there were so many glasses that it was ridiculous. And it was far more glasses than seems like they would have been able to even fit in their cupboard, so it seems like instead of washing them ever he just went out and bought more. Why? Just so he could break them later to beat the alien? Because that is the only reason I can come up with to justify the situation. Two) Killers (2010) a movie starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. Basically, the plot of the movie is: Watch a hit-man fall in love with a female control freak for some reason. Only for them to discover a few years later the people in their lives are mostly all hired killers who try to kill them but fail and die in horrible ways all because of a misunderstanding that doesn't really make sense.Katherine's character is a control freak who meets Ashton's character while she is on vacation. They both lie to each other and have what seems like an awkward first date that paints neither in a particularly great light. He was a spy and retires after meeting her and spending a very short time together. They get married and years later his old boss calls him and gives him a postcard. Then their neighbors, coworkers, etc. all turn against them and try to kill them. The big twist at the end? All of the killers sent after them were sent by her father. Turns out Ashton's character's boss was corrupt and when Katherine's dad saw the postcard, he thought Ashton's character was corrupt and was going to try to kill him. And that he did almost kill him years prior. Except that it doesn’t really make sense, because you would think that if they both worked for the government, Ashton’s character would already be under surveillance in case his former boss tries to contact him. And he should know his former boss was corrupt and that her dad was a target. But this was either never passed on to the audience to keep the twist more of a surprise or it just didn’t come up.The biggest issues I have with this (there are four):For one, some of these hired killers were their neighbors for years. If Ashton's character just came under suspicion, then why were all these killers already in their lives? And they are hired killers, not hired stalkers. Why would they accept a job that requires so many years of work and requires them to actually buy/rent a house and give up their main line of work to avoid falling under suspicious while watching them? He must be paying them a whole lot to make it worth it, but then how does he afford that? Also, a lot of the killers that attacked the couple, while mainly aiming at Ashton, almost killed Katherine's character in the process. Why her father didn't just kill Asthon himself is beyond me. I mean, he had access and he could have just given him something that made it look like he had an allergic reaction and died during a dinner party. Ashton would be gone and he wouldn’t have had to pay nearly as much or risked killing his daughter. But, no, he sent killers after his son-in-law and, at the same time, put his daughter in great danger. Without warning her, helping her, trying to get her out of the way, or even instructing the killers not to hurt her. I mean, why not have her and her mom go to a spa together for a few days? Or I don’t know, trick Ashton to going on a “business trip” somewhere that is really a trap. That gets her out of harm's way. Or, do anything at all for that matter? Oh, that's right! It might give away the nonsensical plot twist and then the movie would actually make sense, but be over that much sooner. My second issue came at the end when the father and son-in-law are arguing at gunpoint. The father says that he saw the postcard and wanted to kill Ashton before Ashton killed him. Which didn't really make sense because the postcard was asking for a meeting, not telling him to kill someone. So, it wasn't really definitive proof of anything. I mean, one postcard asking for a meeting and suddenly he is sending dozens of people to kill his daughter's husband. Her dad could have gotten one of his many hired killers to watch Ashton and taken out his corrupt boss and even Ashton at the meeting with a few snipers. That would also have solved the problem without endangering his daughter.I mean, her father was supposed to be some high-level member of the intelligence agency and he didn't even bother to do any more research or observation after that. He didn't try to see how the meeting went or check to see if there were any more communications between them, he just took out a hit. I mean, if he had checked in, he'd have seen that Ashton refused his old boss's offer to get involved in anything and insist he was retired. My third issue, also with this scene, is the only reason that her dad dropped the gun and calmed down was that she said she was pregnant. He didn't bother seeing if his son-in-law was actually corrupt, he just dropped it when he found out that he was going to be a grandfather. Like really? You weren't that worried about your daughter's safety before when there were hired killers after her. You weren't worried about depriving her of her husband before, literally three seconds before when you had a gun pointed at him. But suddenly, it doesn't matter, because she's pregnant. My last big issue is that a lot of people died over this misunderstanding. And while some were hired killers, others seemed liked they worked with or for her father, that would mean that they were spies working for the government, not just killers looking to collect some money. Yet, no one seems to care at all that so many people died for nothing. Literally nothing. Dozens of people died. More were injured. Some of them they had known as their friends and neighbors. But does anyone care that they died over a misunderstanding? Nope. My neighbors tried to kill me so I killed them? I blew up my coworker? Who cares?! I'm going to be a dad. My coworkers were all murdered because I leaped to conclusions? Men and women put their life on the line and will no longer be going home to their families because of me? My son-in-law might be corrupt and trying to kill me? Who cares?! Bust open the champagne, I'm going to be a grandpa.
