What was your Statement of Purpose (SOP) for entering into a PhD program?

I had always known I didn’t want to be an academic after my Ph.D. I took the risk of making this clear in my statement to all the universities I applied to. Most people advised me to say I wanted to be a faculty, I didn’t think that was intellectually honest. More importantly, I have always believed PhDs can add value outside of academia. So I told the universities how I would use the PhD knowledge to improve commercial technical innovation and market introduction.I was fortunate to be accepted everywhere I applied (MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Caltech, Stanford, GeorgiaTech, Oxford, and Imperial). So the statement didn’t hurt me at least. I would advise to anyone to be really intellectually honest about why you want to do a PhD. It will clarify your own reasons at a minimum and ideally make you stand out in the best case. Here’s the MIT prompt and my reply:Please give your reasons for wishing to do graduate work in the field you have chosen. Prepare your statement of objectives and goals in whatever form clearly presents your views. Include as far as you can, your particular interests, be they experimental, theoretical, or issue-oriented, and show how your background and MIT's programs support these interests. The statement could be much like a proposal for graduate studies, in the more specific context of your professional objectives. You should set forth the issues and problems you wish to address. Explain your longer-term professional goals. The Admissions Committee will welcome any factors you wish to bring to its attention concerning your academic and work experience to date. (500 word limit)Statement of PurposeHaving lived in India since I was nine years old, I have noticed that new technologies take time to be introduced to the Indian market. There is a dire need to enable these technologies to come to market faster than they currently do, especially in places like rural India. For example, solar cells have the potential to provide cheap, renewable energy to those parts of a country which have limited or no access to electricity. In fact, according to a recent census in India, only 44% of rural households use electricity for their primary source of lighting. I plan to not only contribute directly to research in semiconductor devices, but also be involved in introducing these technologies to the market. The Ph.D. program in Materials Science at MIT would provide me with the research experience required to contribute effectively to this effort. My education and research experience to date have given me a strong basis with which to pursue further studies. I have focused my academic career on taking classes in materials science and physics, with an emphasis on electrical and optical properties of materials. Given my sound understanding of the subject matter, I was a teaching assistant for the class on functional materials. Additionally, I have spent a large part of my undergraduate career conducting research on carbon nanotubes. Upon completion of an REU program where I developed nanotube thin films, I began working for Professor Kikkawa at the University of Pennsylvania. Under Prof. Kikkawa, I am pursuing collaborative work to create suspensions of carbon nanotubes using novel peptide surfactants. The project aims to rationally design peptides from first principles that will selectively suspend certain chiralities of nanotubes. Given my educational and research background, I hope to contribute to the development of semiconductor devices.MIT will provide the best fit for me to pursue research in this field. The university provides excellent facilities and resources that are essential for creative research. The Ph.D. in Electronic, Photonic and Magnetic Materials will provide me the ideal academic and research foundation for my career. In particular, Professor Kimerling and Professor Gradecak have very fascinating research projects in semiconductor and optoelectronic materials and devices. Additionally, the department’s connection with many corporations and numerous research facilities at MIT provide very attractive opportunities.I have always attempted to make full use of the resources available to me in furthering my objectives. While at Penn, I am pursuing a degree in Economics from the Wharton School in addition to my engineering degree. This education will supplement my research, and provide me with the knowledge of economics necessary to effectively bring new technologies to market. I believe that I have had a holistic education during my undergraduate career and hope that upon completion of my Ph.D. degree I will be in a position to effect influential change. MIT’s program in Materials Science will provide the strong foundation I hope to gain from my Ph.D. work to become a leader in bringing new semiconductor technologies to our society.

What is the best book for learning Haskell that has a lot of examples of cool things one can do with it that cannot be done with other languages, even if that comes at the expense of rigor?

I think the reason there aren’t any books on Haskell considered truly great, i.e. at the same level as SICP or The C Programming Language, is primarily because the language standard changes fairly often in ways in ways that carry dramatic implications for programming style. It has developed into a language capable of being used in industry at great scale, but does very much continue to be a testbed for ideas originating from the experiment of how one can write practical code in a lazy and purely functional language. The original implementation didn’t even include monads. Haskell wasn’t really the language you think of today until 1998 whereas work on it began in 1987. Personally I’ve learned a lot from programming in applicative style and that only really became part of the standard in 2014 despite it being incredibly obvious from a mathematical standpoint. The vast majority of books on Haskell were published before 2010, which means they’re all using a version of the language two updates old. My favorite overall is probably Graham Hutton’s Programming in Haskell and it uses Hugs…which hasn’t even been maintained since 2006. I also really like Real World Haskell but, again, it came out in 2008. At least I’ve heard Hutton plans on releasing a second edition so I have high hopes for that.Another thing worth pointing out is that hopes for a definitive book on Haskell were likely dashed when Philip Wadler and Richard Bird had a disagreement over the second edition of their Introduction to Functional Programming (renamed “Introduction to Functional Programming with Haskell” in the second edition, solely authored by Bird). Had Wadler, as one of the original developers of the language, stayed on board and updated the book with each major report then it could have been what SICP was for Scheme. As it stands, I don’t know anyone who has read Bird’s version. It’s unfortunate in terms of accessibility, but the definitive writing around Haskell exists in a series of academic papers. This is mostly how I’ve learned so far. They’re largely written in a style that doesn’t require a great level of mathematical sophistication, but the difficulty lies in that fact that most were originally proposals for ideas that later made it into the language standard. This means the actual code in them, besides using Unicode and being written in an academic style that differs a bit from what you’d see in practice, is almost always a bit different from how it ended up being implemented. So in addition to reading them, I’ve had to ask experienced Haskellers to translate these changes for me so I could actually play with the examples. There are, however, a series of papers that are specifically written for readers to be able to immediately implement and seem very much in line with the OP’s description, “I'm particularly interested in one that has lots of good examples of cool things one can do in Haskell that would be harder or impossible in other languages.” These are the The Journal of Functional Programming’s Functional Pearls.

How much can your life change in just one year?

I guess i am the most eligible person to answer this question……My journey from a failure to the #TopperMy journey from 6.0 to 9.8 GPASo here it goes….Year 2014I used to live with my parents till my Intermediate(12th) in a small city so for further studies i came to a tier 2 city ….As i was initially good in my academics i got admission in a very decent engineering college and rented an apartment instead of taking hostel..Now imagine the freedom a guy get when there is no more control of his parents on his life..Now there is no one to force me to go to college or force me to study,no body was there to control my life, nobody is going to monitor my social media usage (typical things indian parents do).I wasn’t aware of the most of the rules of my college like there were marks for attendance and much more..and my college was strict too ,it was having so much programs for freshers like social service where you can be forced to do some work like cut the grass growing on the field or something else they call it a part of their moral based education system and i hate those kind of things (i was lazy too)so i started hating my college….worst part beginsas i was good in studies so i thought to skip classes and i can study myself and perform well in exams …..one more problem for me was engineering drawing i never drawn a perfect circle via compass in my life and now i was dealing things like below-As a result skipped engineering drawing classes…..(scored just 66 out of 150 in my internals in drawing)My teacher told me that you cant even pass…not only in Engineering drawing but also in other subjects…..I was taking wrong advantage of my freedom.I become a facebook, omegle addict usually chat upto 02–03 AM…I was sending friend request to every single girl in the class chatting and flirting them and nobody was giving a fuck…I was fat too (double chin+face fat+stomach fat)Any how manage to make a girlfriend and guess what she always loved my money not me ……most of the time i was bunking my classes to spend time with her …..anyhow i soon realized it and ended my relationship with her…and now half of the year is completed 1st semester is gonesecond was going on…….Now the day comes #The results were outand i scored an 6.0 GPAalmost lowest in my branchmy parents were like every indian parents they scold me even i got good marks like i got 90% in my boards and they were like bss 90% you deserve something more work hard but this time they don’t even say a single word to meMy father just said its okay if you got low marks i know you will improve you know whats right and whats wrong for you…….I literally cried that day……#Internal guilt level 200%that day i made a promised myself this is not gonna end like this …….i am not gonna top from the bottom again….Deleted my fb account……..Deleted InstagramDeleted every fucking social media i was addicted toBecome a #sakht launda (stubborn)Youtube+Books becomes my best friend….Never bunked a single class again even there were some classes in which i was the alone guy who was attending the class …….Second semester ends#results were outNot something i was expecting i was a slow learner ……this time i scored #8.57although it was a huge hike arround 2.5 gpaand the topper of my branch scored 9.3Got a clear A (10/10) in Engineering drawing this time….Again worked hard don’t even missed a single class again understand the grading systemThird semester ends and guess whatI SCORED FU**ING 9.7 GPA THIS TIME……The new topper of the branch…….Not only branch Topper of the whole college for that semester…….The grades continued for next semesters….i am the highest scorer till theSo in just one year i changed from……Failure to TopperFat to Fit(Thanx to the moral value based education system atleast i learned not to be lazyalso started playing sports and exercising )Playboy To StubbornLess morals to high moralsLess Confident to Highly confidentTeachers who say you wouldn’t even pass now give my exampleI still wake up till 02–03 AM but not to talk some random strangers but to study something useful to something productiveAnd there was something changed in me without my knowing#My attitude….The guy who run behind girls become a Sakht launda(stubborn)Four girls of my class proposed me (same girls who don’t give a fuck to my existence in first year ………..maybe they may be impressed with my good grades or thanks for my physical transformation many girls even gyz have told me you are getting smarter with time… )So i receive complements on daily bases now ……Thanks to my genes they wake up late but atleast they did……..And guess what i refused each and every one (proposal) very pleasantlyas i wasn’t interested in wasting my and someone else’s time for some fake loveI am waiting for the Right time and the Right girl…….And this is my final year at collegeThe First company (a good MNC) come for the placementsAnd guess what…….My name was on the top in the selection list……(My interviewer said to the other interviewer that this is the best guy we are gonna recruit today even they come to meet me after the campus interviews ends)And i refused that offer too coz i wanna go for higher studies currently preparing for that………Thanx for reading…………I am new on quora, If you like my story….Please upvoteYour one upvote really means a lot to me………It helps me being motivated…..Thanx again…………………………………………….!!!!!!
