Why did you convert to Hinduism?
Let me tell you my story.I was born in a village in the outskirt of Biswanath Chariali, a town situated in the bank of river Brahmaputra. Most of the people living in our place were the follower of Neo-Vaishnavism propagated by Srimanta Sankardev, similarly our family also followed the same faith. When I was a kid, I was really fascinated about gods like Shiva (god of destruction), Vishnu ( god of sustainance), Durga (Godess of Energy) etc etc. I was fascinated about stars, planets, aliens. But as I grew up, I read about science in school, watched shows like Cosmos and was also a big fan of Sir Hawking (still I am a big fan of him), and slowly I realized that Gods are nothing but mere imaginations of humans mind and religion is useless as it create division among the society. When I reached class 9 and 10, I was a complete atheist. I used to mock Hindu Gods and practices. Then accidentally I got to know about a show which claimed that they had changed the life of many people, named Deep Talks by Deep Trivedi, I watched it with curiosity. It made me the fan of Deep Trivedi, he was a Psychologist, his lectures are mainly based on practical spirituality, how human mind works and success in life.I was still an atheist but I started following his teachings, Deep Trivedi was critical of rituals just like me. He believed there were only three books which teaches the full psychological truths of human mind, Bhagawad Gita, Ashtavakra Gita and Tao Te Ching. I started watching his lectures on Bhagawad Gita. He was the one who actually introduced me to Bhagwad Gita.I bought his book “I am the mind”, it is a great book, it has the ability to transform your life. There I learnt about Detachment, living in the Present moment and dynamics of emotions. But there were some points which a scientific mind like me cant agree. Due to these disagreements, I stopped following him. But he was the one who taught me to think critically. He was the medium through which I got into Hinduism (mainly because of Geeta)I read Bhagawad Geeta, I was really impressed. But I disagreed with some of the things like Krishna is the God and all those stuff. But, the main teachings of Krishna, mostly Karmayoga was my favorite. I started reading more about Hinduism, though most of the thing I did not understand. At last I got a video of 3 hours length named “Hinduism explained”. After watching that video, my view toward Hinduism fully changed. I could not believe how scientific the most ancient religion is. (The video is deleted now)Then the neo-hindutva movement started in India, which resulted the revival of Hinduism mainly among politically aligned Youths, I was not politically aligned but it did affect me and made me interested in national politics. (note: Hindutva and Hinduism are not the same, Hindutva is cultural, Hinduism is spiritual)I started reading more, I learnt about Advaita Vedanta, which actually converted me into a Hindu. I started watching lectures of Swami Sarvapriyananda, Dr Ashish Shukla (who introduced me to Osho and Krishnamurti), Sadhguru. I started reading Upanishads, books by Krishnamurti, Osho and Swami VivekanandaNow, I had developed some kind of Vairagya (detachment) in my life, no more selfish desires, no more depressed mood, Most of the negativity in my life vanished. These are the results if you develop just a small amount of Vairagya. This is a journey and it have not ended yet.Edit (28 aug 2020): You already know I have an atheistic background, that’s is the reason why I had always considered the path of Gyan and Karma is superior to the path of Bhakti. But now I have realized that Bhakti is also an effective mean to remove Raag, Dvesh, Moh (attachment, aversion, delusion). Plus, the path of Bhakti is beautiful, submitting yourself to someone who is superior to you, and immersing yourself in the love for him/her, that’s really beautiful. But I wouldn’t suggest Bhakti without Gyan and Karma.(Swami Sarvapriyananda, great Advaita teacher)(Dr. Ashish Shukla, spiritual teacher and medical doctor)(Deep Trivedi, psychologist)
What does it say about America that Hillary Clinton is considered a liberal?
The US is more conservative than Europe on economic issues. The average American is less willing to pay taxes to support a broad social safety net. That much is known. But the idea that Hillary Clinton is some kind of conservative is patent nonsense. Can people name actual policies she supported that made her a conservative? Every time I press people on that point, I hear some nonsense about flip-flopping or some other incoherent rambling.Hillary Clinton is a liberal. As best I can tell, she had 2 areas of heterodoxy with the rest of her party. The first is that she is a military hawk. She’s far from being the only one in the party. There have always been left-of-center military hawks. This, by the way, is the only way she would have differed from Obama policy-wise. On her second area of heterodoxy, I’d say that she was more sympathetic to Wall Street, but her actual policy proposals would have been at least as liberal as Obama’s. People like to bring up the issue of gay marriage. The fact is, she did what all politicians do: they try not to get too far ahead of their electorate. Obama was famously “evolving” on the issue until 2012. Does anyone really believe that he changed his mind between 2008 and 2012? Of course not! He was waiting until he felt it politically safe to support it. Hillary started supporting gay marriage in 2013, just one year later. If you look at her positions, they were gradually shifting leftwards as the public made it safer and safer to support it. Besides, it’s not as though Europe was much faster in adopting gay marriage. It’s true that the Netherlands did it in 2001 and Spain did it in 2005. But France did it in 2011 and The UK did it in 2013–2014. And Germany only did it in 2017.If you look at Hillary’s positions, it’s clear that she’s left-of-center.Let’s go through some things from Hillary Clinton on the Issues. I’m only going to focus on the period from 2010 and later, because I think it’s the most relevant. After all, we don’t assess Obama by what he was doing and saying in 2005.Hillary Clinton on Budget & EconomyNo trumped-up trickle-down: reward work, not transactions. (Sep 2016)Trump's plan costs 3.5M jobs; mine creates 10M jobs. (Sep 2016)Jobs for you, not just prosperity for those at the top. (Sep 2016)Committed to reducing corporate power not only Wall St. (Feb 2016)Go after shadow banking industry, like Lehman Brothers. (Nov 2015)We need bankruptcy reform, but we need the right kind. (Aug 2014)1998: Personally lobbied Congress against bankruptcy bill. (Apr 2014)Don't add a penny to the national debt. (Oct 2016)Democrats would have paid off national debt in 2000s. (Jul 2015)I have a hard time finding much above that would disqualify her from being left-of-center.Now, let’s look at what she’s had to say about corporations:Make economy work for everyone, not just the powerful. (Oct 2016)I voted to close corporate tax loopholes that Trump used. (Oct 2016)Make wealthy pay their fair share; close corporate loopholes. (Sep 2016)I voted for bill that saved the auto industry. (Mar 2016)I warned corporations about wrecking the economy. (Feb 2016)Every once in a while we have to save capitalism from itself. (Oct 2015)OpEd: Disagrees with progressives on corporatism & military. (Dec 2014)Agrees that Wall Street and banks cannot get too powerful. (Feb 2016)It's not just Wall Street; it's Big Pharma too. (Feb 2016)Monied interests spending money to defeat me. (Feb 2016)FactCheck: Yes, hedge-fund billionaires run ads against her. (Dec 2015)AIG & Lehman were not big banks; we needed to bail them out. (Nov 2015)Let bank regulators send bank executives to jail. (Oct 2015)Investigate "shadow banks" and break up big banks. (Oct 2015)The only thing that looks right of center here is the line I italicized and bolded above. When I read this, I assumed she’d written an op-ed in which she had stated her views, so I tracked this down.Hillary Clinton on CorporationsHere’s the relevant passage:OpEd: Disagrees with progressives on corporatism & militaryIs Hillary a progressive? The answer is unambiguously no; Hillary is a liberal centrist. Progressives support "fair trade," which means that free trade agreements should include environmental and labor clauses; Hillary is an ardent free-trader. WikiLeaks' Julian Assange is a hero to progressives who believe in open government and oppose secrecy, but a traitor to Hillary. Progressives ardently oppose military intervention abroad; Hillary is a hawk. And progressives are ardently anti-corporate, while Hillary is pro-corporate.Often the difference is a matter of degree: progressives would tax capital gains as regular income; Hillary might only moderately increase it, as illustrated in this exchange:The capital gains tax under Bill Clinton was 28%. It's now 15%.CLINTON: I wouldn't raise it above the 20% if I raised it at all. I would not raise it above what it was during the Clinton administration.Source: Jeb vs. Hillary On The Issues, by Jesse Gordon, p.37,66,&168 , Dec 10, 2014This is an opinion piece! The only fact that is listed here is that she wouldn’t raise capital gains higher than 20%.Where did this come from? From one of the Obama-Clinton debates in 2008. It was in the context of a discussion in which they were discussing how they would each go about raising revenues.I will get back to talking about the issue of taxation, but first, let me follow the last link: Jeb Bush vs. Hillary Clinton On The Issues, by Jesse Gordon of OnTheIssues.orgIt’s the supposed source from which it is deduced that Hillary is “pro-corporate.” It’s nothing more than a comparison of her positions to those of Jeb Bush. That’s it. Now, let’s get to the issue of taxation. What was Hillary proposing when she was running in 2016? She’d considered a system of universal basic income, but she couldn’t get her numbers to add up.This is the plan she ended up proposing:Does this look like a left-of-center or even centrist plan to anyone? Moreover, she was proposing to increase the capital gains tax:She was also proposing increasing the estates tax:In addition to this, she wanted financial regulation to go further than Dodd-Frank:In what kind of universe is this not left of center?Again, I will agree that her military policy was far to the right of that of the average Democrat. But, on literally everything else, she was decidedly left-of-center.I know it’s a popular refrain to keep calling Hillary or Democrats center-right by international standards. But can people actually give me specific policy proposals?
What are some inspirational short stories that can change a person's life?
(Story of an IT employee)Running, Marathon, Triathlon is really tough, tough in the sense that being in IT field, spending hours in front of stubborn, firm and resolute desktop with all laziness and suddenly aim for triathlon is really tough. Seems ridiculous and quite strange that how one can defy such laziness at this extent, shrugging off the idleness, the kind of immobility that an IT employee has been endowed by the mobile chair and to add more it revolves too.Hiren Patel, The Iron Man, who got this title on 19th July, 2015 after completing triathlon held at Zurich, Switzerland. Hiren, the Infosyscion, with body of steel and wits of iron, this man, sorry Ironman , definitely has unfettered the idleness and gave the hope to peers. Greatly it has been said by an Oriental monk Swami Vivekananda that, “To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. I will drink the ocean, says the persevering soul, at my will mountains will crumble up. Have that sort of energy, that sort of will. Work hard and you will reach the goal”. And it seems so true here.Really, it is amazing, mesmerizing and full of life. It takes a lot of vigor, mental strength and what not to transform a mortal into immortal of passion, spirit and lively soul. I, weekly watcher of Batman trilogy, always considered batman as the synonym of inspiration, perseverance, discipline, dedication, resolution but did not know that Iron Man will take this epithet.Fortunate I am that there are always someone to inspire, inspire to make difference, to achieve our goal, to achieve our purpose no matter what the circumstances are. And with such determination of steel, definitely, I believe, anyone can move faster than the possible, can fight longer than the possible and can realize impossible possible.Conversation with Ironman.Me: What made you believe that you can do it?Ironman: After completing London Edinburgh London 2013 (1420 km Cycling in 103 hrs), which make me 1st and only Indian to finish it, I believed it I can do anything. There is nothing that anyone can’t do it. Just be realistic and give yourself good amount of time to achieve your goal.Me : What are you good at? I mean among the three sprints.Ironman: Among 3 sprints, already being a long distance cyclist, I was very good at Cycling. Then it comes running and Swimming was the weakest.Me: Since when have you been practicing for each sprints?- Cycling, since Mar, 2010 when I got 2nd hand non-geared hero hawk.- Running, since Aug, 2012. Started as a cross-training for cycling.- Swimming since Oct, 2013. Started from zero for Iron Man only.Me: How do you practice for running? Any tips for future Ironman.Ironman: Generally I practice running after swimming only. I run 7-8 km per day, 3 days a week. Once in a week especially on weekends do a long run like 15-20 km if there is no Marathon event scheduled in the city. For the future Ironman, don’t go for the speed/pace from the day 1. Just take it easy. If u cannot run for 1 KM then do run-walk-run. 3 years ago, I was not able to run a single km. So it will take time.Me: How do you practice for swimming? Any tips for future Ironman.Ironman: Swimming being the weakest, I practiced a lot and thought about it every day. Once I learnt it, I used to swim 1-1.5 km per day, 3 days a week. On one of the week end I used to do more than 2.5 km, slowly I increased the distance and for last 3-4 months, I was doing 2 km per day for 3 days a week and 4 km on Saturday / Sunday. For the future Ironman, people in India who wants to do Ironman, most of them have Swimming as the biggest issue. My advice is to start ASAP under some good coach. Learn in 50m pool will be better and learn 2 sided Free Style from start. To be a good swimmer, first thing is to get rid of fear of water. So until and unless, u have fear, u will struggle.Me: How do you practice for cycling? Any tips for Ironman.I don’t have any other vehicle apart from Cycle. So I use cycle for everyday use and wherever I can like commute to office (be it heat, cold or rain), shopping malls, theatre, to reach events starting point. I did BRM’s (200km, 300km, 400km and 600 km) for long distance cycling practice. Apart from this, I used to do a 100 km+ ride on every weekend.First invest in good cycle and accessories. Helmet is must. Don’t try to go for the speed. Enjoy the ride. IF your target is Ironman then suggest to buy a basic good road bike only. If u have budget then only go for Carbon or TT bike. There is no upper limit when it comes to cost of a very good cycle for Ironman. So be wise enough while choosing a cycle. Don’t put all your money into it, make yourself stronger. I did it on Cycle worth 45k where remaining all participants had cycle worth 1 lakh and above, and even though some of them were not able to complete it.Me: Any moment during the event when you felt like giving up?Ironman: During the event I never felt like giving up at any moment. I want to fight hard till I finish or till 16 hrs (Cut-off is over). I was there after 2 years of practice, expectations from so many people, my company sponsored me, invested all my hardly earned savingsMe: How about the other people who were participating in this event? Would you like to share about them?Ironman: Events like this you meet so many inspirational people from all age groups. There couples who both finishes Ironman, there was a person aged 50 completing his 7th Ironman after starting first one at the age of 43, there was our own Bollywood Actor aged 50 Milind Sonam and our own Kastubh Radkar, 11 times Iron Man.Me: Your inspirational figure, in life and in this event?Ironman: Being a hard-core cricket fan since childhood, Sachin Tendulkar is always my hero and inspiration. But now I follow and get inspired by Saina Nehwal, Roger Federer & Lance Armstrong.Me: Any thought and message you would like to convey to your peers?Ironman: Do not listen to others when you decided to something. You might face some hurdles, some people will not support you as they won’t understand why you wanted to do this or that, and there will be ups and downs. Just keep learning from your experiences and go ahead.Milind Soman among 12 aspiring Ironmen this time from IndiaFrom cricket to triathlon, Pune's Ironman Hiren Patel bares his heartDesign your DestinyP.S. pic is from the event and source is google.comsorry for bad english and grammar.
