PDF Editor FAQ

Me and my wife are developers with 7 years of experience and earning around 23L INR together. Should I immigrate to Canada?

I was in same situation as you when I got my canada PR I had 7+ years of experience in IT. My wife also had same experience.I moved to canada in 2016 after winding up everything in India. Left my decent paying job in Pune. My wife went 6 months before i went as she had parents in Canada. I continued my job in India and she was trying to find a job. She found a job in 3 months. From my personal experience I would say initial 6–8 months would be really tough if you don't have any relatives to support. Trying to find a job and getting all things necessary for settling like driving license, bank accounts, health cards, finding place to stay etc. There are lot of jobs in software development in almost any technology. You just have to be little flexible. I would suggest either of the you should do contracting as that pays a lot of money and you can account some expenses and save on taxes. Also one can take advantage of other partners benefits from permanent job.The biggest problem people who come here is to come with lot of expectations and no preparation at all. One should have a concrete plan of settlement before landing with atleast 1000 cad per month per person for 6–8 months . Be in touch with Recruiter in the specific area where you will be moving. Network with people and recruiter community on linkedin and find about career opportunities in your specific skillset. Don't be stuck with specific role or teechnology , you have to be flexible with any kind of job.To give you perspective , I had virtual phone number of canada before even landing here. I updated my LinkedIn with number and changed my location on linkedin, soon I started getting calls from Recruiters and HR. I gave few skype interviews and they were ready for next round of discussion but they didn't wanted to wait for too long till I land there. I was constantly in touch with recruiters and had arranged few interviews when I landed there. I had 6 months contract job in 3 days after landing here.I got myself Incorporated in 30 minutes and opened a small business account and started working as IT consultant and in 1 year I had 2 clients and consultee them in their IT business. We got our own house in 3 months after I landed here. Compared to india my salary is like 10 times what I used to earn in India. Ofcourse expenses are also a lot but then you save a lot too.Coming to universal healthcare and education, it is good but it has wait times if you need to see a specialist, but thats with any country which has social benifits. Education is free till high school and is rated at par with most developed countries. Overall its good if you prepare yourself well before landing here.Edit :1 Many people have asked my email address, added me on FB and Linked In to know more about immigration to Canada. I cannot individually address all your concerns or questions as that is not my profession. Applying for immigration to Canada under express entry program is very simple and very well documented on cic website www.cic.gc.ca.I can rundown the overall process but you can always go to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada | Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada and find out more about the process.Find out of if you are eligible to apply under express entry program as skilled worker. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who.aspYou should find out in which skilled category you fall based on your education or work experience. You should have minimum 1yr of experience in your specified category to be eligible to apply under express entry. To find your your category code use below link. For express entry skill type 0, A&B are applicable. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who.asp3. To apply under express entry program you should have language skills which you can prove by giving IELTS or CELPIP exam for english or TEF for french. You should have minimum CLB 7 for english or NCLC 7 for french as your first official language, or CLB 5 or NCLC 5 as second official language.Note : Both English and french are not mandatory, but English is mandatory, you won’t score additional points for french if you don’t give french Exam. Starting june 6 if you have french score of above NCLC 5 then you get additional 30 points in your CRS score.4. You should also get your education assessed to prove that your education is equivalent to education in Canada, you can get it done from WES(www.wes.org). It takes around 1–2 months to get education assessed. http://www.wes.org/ca/fswp/requireddocuments/5. You would also need to arrange letter of references from all your employers stating your duties and responsibilities, dates of employment and number of hours per week(Note it should state you were employed full time and not part time). This letter should be on letter head of the organization signed by your supervisor or HR .6. Once you have IELTS test results, Education assessment certificate, you need to calculate your score using below link. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) tool - Skilled immigrants (Express Entry).7. Express Entry results: Previous rounds of invitationsyou can also look at number of candidates under each CRS score ranges, this will give you some idea if at all you can expect an invite. Express Entry rounds of invitations9. Once you get an invite , you have 90 days to submit full application with forms filled in and documents scanned and uploaded. Determine your eligibility - Federal skilled workers10. You should proof of funds which depends on number of applicants in an application. Proof of funds - Skilled immigrants (Express Entry). These funds can be in form of bank balance, investments or savings in form of ppf or epf which can be liquidated before you immigrate . Assets like car, house and land are not considered. Typically 6 months of statement is required to be submitted , so if you are taking money from parents or friends make sure you take a gift authorization from them .11. You need to arrange Police clearance certificate from your home country & all the countries where you have stayed for more than 6 months.12. You also need to undergo medical clearance before you immigrate, generally this can be done once you are requested to undergo medical exam.13 Once your application is processed(at least 80% of applications are processed in 6 months after applying), you will be asked to send your passport to local embassy to stamp a temporary visa so that you can land in Canada. You will also recieve CoPR(Confirmation of Permanent residence) which is valid for 1 year from the date of your medical exam. You need to land and claim your PR before its validity.Below are some of the things that you have to do after landing into Canada as Permanent residentWhen you land, you will be asked to go to special counter for first time immigrants and they will ask you general questions.Next you will go for security, here they might ask you to show proof of funds , if you don’t have sufficient funds as per your family size, you might be asked to go back and your PR will be cancelled. Funds can be in form of cash or travellers cheque or Balance Statement from Canadian/US bank. If you are carrying more than 10k CAD in cash or travellers cheques you have to report it at the security else you will be put in jail.Get a list of things that you are carrying at the time of landing and also things that you will bring later into the country. Specially get all your jwellery and expensive items attested so that you don’t need to pay any duties when you bring them when you enter Canada. You need to apply for SIN number after you land, you can get it from Service Canada office in your area. Its just a number and not a card. You can open a bank account once you have a SIN number, and get a credit card to staring building your credit history. You are not covered by health insurance till 90 days after you land, you need to get a private insurance upto 90 days , in this time you should apply for your health card which you will get in 6–8 weeks time, but the coverage starts only after 90 days. Health card gives you privilege to get health checkups and visit to physician or specialist free of charge, you don’t need to pay anything to Dr. or clinic, not even for medical test.Apply for G1 license, which is an online exam to test your knowledge about driving in province where you are going to drive. Once you have G1 license then you can drive a car with any experienced driver and schedule your drive test G2 which is almost full driving privilege . Once you have G2 then you can drive anywhere alone . Don’t forget to get driving experience extract from RTO in india and no claim certificate from your car insurance provider to get insurance discount here.If you are going to Toronto or GTA , then you would need presto card or TTC depending on where you are going to stay and commute to. This helps to use public transit. You can find more info on Tap On. Ride Easy. or ttc website .Other than IT engineers, finding job in other fields is not easy and can take upto 6 months to find a right job. You need to get Canadian certification for profession in finance, account , insurance etc.Recruiter who ask you to meet personally before representing you to client is very normal, and this is to see your communication skills and overall qualification for the job.

How can I overcome the phobia of talking to people so as to improve my social life in academe?

Use a cheat codeAs an introvert turned ambivert, I feel compelled to write this down for the sake of all the awesome introvert brothers and ladies out there. Now I am no motivational pundit telling you the sleazy tricks to win friends and influence people. I devised this strategy out of pure misery and dire need to stop letting those extroverts crush my self belief down. The ‘art’ of conversation is nothing but misunderstood. Who says that you have to blabber on about your life stories and adventures to the rest of the mortals and this would make you a good conversationalist? You or anyone for that matter can overcome your phobia of talking to people by doing what we introverts do best.Listen.In every conversation there is a ‘speaker’ and a ‘listener’ and the only thing which seperates this ‘art’ from a speech is ‘interaction’. And that is where the cheat code comes in.Are you afraid that people think of you as an ignorant buffoon? Are you afraid that your shyness is misinterpreted as an ‘attitude problem’?Are you afraid to speak to a beautiful girl because you wouldn’t know what to say to her once you say ‘hi’ and then resort to awkward silence and weird jokes that will make both of you cringe later? Are you afraid of what to speak to your boss or teacher other than ‘Yes sir’ and ‘No Sir’?If it is the case then this cheat code will save your life. The thing with us introverts is that we are born awesome, but limit that awesomeness to ourselves and only share our deepest talents once we are too comfortable with the other person, which in this day and age might be enough time to give you a ‘No’, either from prospective employers in an interview or a ‘prospective wife’ on the very first date. Stakes are high you see.The extroverts are born show-off’s. They might not have the plan and haven’t figured it all out, yet they will kill that interview and emerge as your ‘prospective wife’s’ horrible ex.(Extroverts are requested to not take offence here. I am trying to motivate my brothers about their awesomeness)They like to tell the world about their adventurous tales, their exotic experiences and everything that could be considered as bragging (you get my point). This is the thing which will make our lives easier. Providing fuel to the fire is our only job and they themselves will do the rest of the talking. The Cheat Code-Whenever you have to make a pep talk use this kickass tool.Ask Them.Ask them about-How are you?- Basic question. Will definitely be reciprocated with, “I’m fine. What about you?” to which you say the same.So how is-Family- Always start with family. Since you want to let them do most of the talking, speaking about their spouse or parents or kids will let them open up, which should be your priority. Let them say as much as they want. They will follow up soon with the same question for which you will already have an answer. This will also reduce the inbred fear of uncertainty among introverts and will give a psychological benefit. You can follow it up with person specific questions like- asking about his father who was in a hospital, or his daughter’s school or the new business of his spouse. You know, things which you know about his family. This will also help establish rapport between the two.Work- The answer will either be ‘it is amazing’ or ‘it sucks’. Follow it up with person specific questions. [What kind of work do you do? What is your role? What about your office mates? What kind of clients are you working with? What is the work culture of your organization like? Competition? Market? etc. etc.] Pick up on a few points as they speak and follow them up. Let’s say he is speaking about how a new government policy has impacted his job. Follow up with that change and steer the conversation about the government. And everyone loves either praising or bashing the government and its policies. In fact, note down Politics as an entire new point as it provides a great fuel to any conversation. Everyone has an opinion about this topic. If he is a Modi lover, say that you don’t think that Modi is working as per the expectations. Then you sip your coffee and let him go on for half an hour as he will justify why Modi haters should shove their opinions up there….. (you get it. Bhakt here too BTW)Current Affairs- Ask their opinion about any topic which is currently popular. It could be about Olympics or a new startup which is anticipated to be the next big thing or the lip job of a popular actress gone bad. Anything which will steer the conversation forward.Their vacations- So where have you been to recently? Just ask it and let them brag in detail about their hiatus in Goa or Switzerland or Bali. Follow up with questions about the people, culture, climate, popular spots, cuisines etc. and let them do the talking.A social issue- This can range from climate to feminism with ’n’ number of topics. Pick up any trending one and go with it.Interests- They like speaking about it in detail. Whether it is clubbing or reading a gazillion books, everyone speaks about their interests with excitement and in detail. Just give them a topic they can’t ignore. And lastly-Your stories- This is an offbeat point. The long list presented above will help you sit through the pep talks and will definitely provide you with enough material to steer the conversation for about half an hour. But you don’t want to end it with the person leaving with an impression that, “The dude is one hell of a listener. But he is boring”. That is where your stories come in.Create interesting stuff about yourself. Fictional stories, unreal adventures, that something which will make them think about your awesome story at night when they go to sleep and wish that they have a similar experience. Your experiences can be taken out of a novel or a movie or could be an exaggerated version of a real life mundane activity. Just make sure to keep it realistic and keep the fine line drawn between reality and fiction. Also it is true that all of these points can not be adopted for every conversation. If you want to be friends with a guy from your college, you can’t ask him about work since he might not be working. Instead you can go with his schooling, childhood, girlfriend etc.The above list is a basic framework to which more points could be added as it suits you. Once you start running with this list and start making conversations, you’ll see how easier it becomes. So the next time you are stuck in that awkward silence, pick the topic of your choice and roll with it.Kudos.Edit: On request of Chetan Tuteja , shedding some more light on the ‘beautiful girl’ one (*Not dating advice)It is true that you cannot start by asking about her family straight away if you are striking a conversation with her for the first time. You can definitely lead with this one on a date. For the first conversation, try moving with her-Interests-Ambitions-Work-College/School related stuff (What is she pursuing? A few points about that topic, etc.)-and of course, “Do you have a boyfriend?”Just kidding. Take dating advice in advance from the ‘popular hot mess’ on Quora

How was your IIM Bangalore interview experience 2020?

IIM Bangalore interviewDate: 28th February 2020 (Morning slot 9.30 am)Location: IIM Bangalore10th: 99.04%, 12th: 96.67%, B.E (Electronics & Communication): 9.79Category: GeneralWork experience: 30 monthsCAT score: 98.56 percentileWAT Topic (Duration: 30 minutes, 10 minutes to think, 20 to write): Taking into account the increasing violence, should politics be completely banned in educational institutions?I wrote something along the lines of politics is needed to build leadership and organizational skills, but care must be taken such that it is not influenced by external political parties.Panel:There were 3 panel members, two professors and one alumnus.P1: Hi, how are you doing?Me: I am fine, doing well.P1: Can you tell us more about what you work on such that a layman would understand?Me: ok, let me explain, I think you all know what a contact center solution is.P2: You mean a call center?Me: Yes, but includes messaging, conferencing and other social media tools as well. I am working on a cloud microservice called Authentication and Authorization (A&A) which is part of the contact center solution. The agent in a call center needs to be initially authenticated when he logs in and needs to be authorized whenever he tries to access customer details while handling a call.P1: Can you explain more about what a cloud microservice is?Me: For a contact center solution, there is a call server to route calls and various other applications to compute routing logic, analyzing data and so on. All these different applications instead of being on a single platform are broken down into various smaller services called microservices. This makes it easier to deploy on cloud since these microservices can be individually scaled up and down as and when required. Deploying on cloud reduces costs of customers as well since they need not have to maintain their own datacenters.P2: Since you have worked on cloud, let me ask a question in general. When would you advise a business, not necessarily contact center, to not adopt cloud?Me: Suppose a business has already invested a lot in setting up a datacenter, then I don’t think it would be suitable for them to move to cloud.P3: I don’t agree, I have seen many businesses move to cloud despite having their own datacenter. Think about a different scenario where you would not advise a business to move to cloud,Me: There might be a scenario where the company wants to maintain its data at its own location due to security considerations. I would advise such a business not to move to cloud.P3: Fair enough. So, do you keep yourself updated with current affairs?Me: Yes, I try to keep up by reading the newspaper.P3: Which newspaper do you read?Me: The New Indian Express.P2: What is this new? Is it different from the Indian Express?Me: YesP3: Were they ever published together?Me: YesP3: Are you sure?Me: I mean they are completely different papers now, with different publishers and editors and are not related.P3: Who is the editor?Me: Sorry, I can’t remember the name right now.P2: Fine, did you read today’s newspaper? What are the headlines?Me: There was some news about an IB staffer who was stabbed in Delhi riots.P3: Was it in today’s news? Isn’t that quite old?Me: Yes, there was some news about that today?P2: Ok, what else?Me: There was a headline regarding Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa celebrating his birthday.P3 (Smiling): Ok, so what is his age?Me: I think 80, I am not sure.P2 (Having a laugh): I don’t think he is that old.Me (Smiling): I don’t seem to recall the exact number, but it is quite close to that (Later checked it was 78 😐 )P3: I don’t need all this, you are trying to get into a B-school, what was some business news you read today?Me (Thinking for about 5 seconds): Regarding the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues that Vodafone Idea Limited have to pay, there was a proposal to provide a loan at 6% simple interest for a duration of 15 years.P3: Should the government help out with such a proposal?Me: I think in this case, yes.P3: Why? Should the government bail out every failing business then?Me: No, in this case, if Vodafone-Idea Limited goes down, it becomes a duopoly of only two companies in the telecom industry which would be bad for the consumers in the long run.P3: Why not let the company shut down?Me: Vodafone-Idea Limited has a debt of about 1.15 lakh crores, so if the company shuts down and files bankruptcy, then banks would suffer huge losses.P3: Then it becomes a fire sale, right? Why not the government itself buy the company?Me: The government already owns a telecom business which is not making profits, so buying another such company doesn’t seem to be a good idea.P3: So, is this proposal an ideal solution?Me: No, it is not ideal, but it seems to be the best way forward so that the company does not default and remains in business.P2: You have written you work in agile development model. Can you explain more about it?Me: It is a software development methodology which is suitable for a project where requirements change frequently. The development duration is time-boxed in the form of sprints which is of 2 or 3 weeks duration.P2: Have you heard of Agile manifesto, can you explain about that?Me: No, I haven’t heard of it.P2: Why agile in your project?Me: We have incremental builds every sprint and it helps to provide working software to adopters at the end of each sprint which is of 2 weeks duration.P2: Why is a sprint of 2 or 3 weeks duration? Why not more than that?Me: The duration would then become too high giving scope for adding multiple features thereby increasing complexity. If its longer than 3 weeks, it is better to go for waterfall model.P2: Why don’t you use waterfall model?Me: We need to provide a working microservice build at the end of each sprint so that adopters can integrate other microservices. And since requirement from adopters change frequently, agile is suitable for us. A waterfall model is only suitable if all the requirements are known beforehand and there are no changes and no need for incremental builds.P2: Ok, have you heard of a term called devops? What is it?Me: Devops means development and operations. Whenever a developer commits code, the changes are compiled to have a software build which is deployed and then automated tests are run on the new build to make sure there are no functionality breakages. All these procedures which are done after development are part of the operations. So, development along with all these operations is termed as devops.P1: You have written in your SOP that giving free incoming calls resulted in revolution in mobile communication. Don’t you think schemes like these are the reason telecom industry is in such a dire state?Me: Whenever a new business starts, it has to give some incentives to expand its customer base. This was one such scheme that boosted the use of mobile phones in India.P1: Can you tell me what are the major costs involved when a new mobile network operator wants to start business?Me: There are major infrastructure costs such as setting up mobile towers, buying spectrum bandwidth, laying out optic fibers and so on.P1: Are these the major costs? What about recurring costs such as employee salaries, maintaining service quality and such other costs?Me: I think initial infrastructure costs would outweigh all these.P1: With such high costs involved why are the call and data prices still so low?Me: Whenever a new player enters the market, it tries to keep the costs low so as to attract customers and the existing players need to match those costs to remain relevant otherwise they would end up losing a lot of customers.P1: You mean prices?Me: Yes prices, not costs.P3: What do you feel about the prices for data and calls in India compared to other countries?Me: They are quite cheap and are among the lowest prices offered in the world.P3: I feel that’s why they are suffering losses. Do you think now they should start charging for incoming calls?Me: The telecom companies have already started to do it in some sort of way. For example, Airtel has introduced a plan where you need to pay 49 rupees a month just to stay on the network and receive incoming calls.P3: Since you are a communications engineer, you should be able to explain this to me in an understandable way. I need to know what all happens when a call is placed, and how the average revenue per user (ARPU) costs are decided. I’ll give you a scenario. I place a call on my mobile here to another mobile in Turkey. What all happens to connect the call?I started to explain how call request goes to base station controller (BSC) and is later transferred to mobile switching center (MSC) where it gets recognized as an international call to Turkey and forwarded to relevant MSC.P3: This is too technical, I need to know how the cost of the call is calculated. Are there multiple providers involved?Me: Yes, there are multiple providers involved and the cost of the call is shared between them.P3: So, should there be a floor-pricing so that telecom companies don’t reduce the prices much lower than the costs involved? Would that be a good idea to save the telecom businesses?Me: I think it is a good idea. Even though consumer prices may go up a little, it would help in reviving the telecom industry and making sure that they are fairly compensated and do not run into losses.P2: I need to know more about 5G technology. Can you explain?Me: What exactly do you need to know? Is it the features or the technology involved?P2: Don’t tell me that data rate is higher, I want to know about the technology involved.Me: There is one new technique called the beam-forming technology whereby the approximate location of the mobile is tracked when it registers to a nearby tower and data packets are transferred only in that particular direction. This helps in reducing packet loss thereby providing low latency and high data rates.P3: I have read a few articles in the newspaper that some cities are planning to ban 5G. Do you know about that? What do you think might be the reason?Me: I am not sure, but I believe it might be due to radiation concerns. For beam-forming technique, high power radiation in concentrated in a very small area. Hence there might be concerns about radiation hazards.P2: You said you read the newspaper and stay updated with current affairs. What can you tell me about the current state of Indian economy?Me: The retail inflation is quite high and the government is not able to create enough employment opportunities.P3: What you are saying is contradictory. If people don’t have jobs, they won’t be able to spend. So, demand would decrease, why would there be inflation? How do you explain this?Me: I think the retail inflation increased due to spurt in onion prices a couple of months back.P2: Onion prices are back to normal now. That alone can’t be responsible for high inflation anyway. What else do you think might be the reason?Me: I read about a concept called stagflation where economic stagnancy is coupled with inflation.P3: There is no stagnancy, what is the current GDP growth rate?Me: It is around 5%, But it is lower than the 6.5% growth that was seen last year.P3: It means the economy is still growing. It is not stagnant. Do you have a better explanation for why there is high inflation?Me: Sorry I don’t know.P1: Ok, we are done here. Any questions you have for us?Me: In essay, you had asked us to provide an opinion about whether politics is needed in educational institutions. I was just wondering every college has some sort of electoral process including this one, right?P1: We cannot give our opinion on the topic. But yes, here also we have student council where elections are conducted but are not linked to any external political parties. Does it bother you?Me: No, I was just curious since the topic popped up.P1: Ok then, All the bestMe: Thank youVerdict: Straight convert 😊
