Should I switch over to become a doctor or stay in nursing? How difficult is it for a RN to become a doctor in Australia?
I did it. Bachelor Nursing at UTS in 2000. New graduate RN and then Emergency Nurse at RNSH 2000 to 2002. Graduated M.B.B.S at Sydney University in 2006. Passed RACGP fellowship in 2014.It is difficult. However, that's because becoming a doctor is difficult. There is NO easy path. Being a Nurse does not make it more difficult. That said, being a Nurse does skew which parts of the application process are difficult. Some of it will be easier because you are a Nurse. Some parts may be harder, but, that depends on your personal circumstances. As I'm sure you know, you are restricted to Graduate entry courses - as opposed to undergraduate courses that you enter straight from high school. To get into these graduate courses you need to beat a lot of other people in a difficult exam - the GAMSAT or something similar. Things have changed recently and I think, but I'm not 100% confident, that different graduate programs now have different entrance examinations. Each medical school will clearly advertise their individual application process. These examinations are hard - they contain a lot of University-level science questions. Your Nursing qualification is, unfortunately, no preparation for the science part of the exam. If you don't know how hard these exams are then track down a practice paper. They sell them via the webpage above if you can't find a first year medical student with an old version. If the questions are incomprehensible to you then you need to think long and hard before embarking on the application process. Studying for this exam can consume a lot of time, is difficult and can get expensive if you sign up for the preparation courses. The exam itself is expensive. And ... most people who sacrifice this time, effort and money are unsuccessful. It may be in your best interest to dismiss this idea before you invest too much of your life into it.You should also be aware that the science part of this examination will be a lot easier for some people. There are entire 3 year undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Medical Science) full of people intending to sit this exam at the end of their degree to get into medicine. Unless your hobby is studying medical sciences then they will have an advantage in the exam over you. Be aware that these people are your competition - you need to do better than a lot of them to progress in the application process. There is no 'pass mark' that guarantees an interview. That said, if you make it through the exam, and get an interview, you'll be far ahead of the Medical Science applicants. Most have gone straight from high school into the Bachelor of Medical Science and have little real world experience to differentiate themselves from other applicants. Actually having been part of a hospital team - and knowing what doctors do each day - is a massive advantage in the interview. Now ... if your hobby is studying medical sciences, and you reckon you'd ace the entrance exam, then I'd still do a little thinking before embarking on the application process.Note that you don't get any credit for your Nursing degree. Everyone does the same degree in medicine. I did the same Anatomy lectures and exams as student in my course who was a PhD, and lecturer, in Anatomy. Yes, he did better than me in these exams. The medical degree is hard! It's not beyond your capability but it requires a lot of work. These graduate entry courses are a 6 year degree condensed into 4. The semesters are longer than other courses but, nevertheless, the lectures and tutorials at University just point you in the right direction and it's really up to you to make up these missing 2 years in your own time. You'll need to study every evening and most of the weekend. Do you really want to spend 4 years during medical school doing little else but study, sleep and working a part-time job to keep your head above water? Medicine is not like your Nursing degree. You can't defer study until the night before the exam. It requires consistent, all consuming study to keep on track - especially if medical sciences aren't your strength.Furthermore, before you go any further, work out whether you really want to be a doctor. Ironically, Nursing can give a skewed perspective about what a doctor does for a living. Nurses only see doctors for a fraction of a day. They whisk into the patient's room, don't sit down, rush through a consult with a patient and then disappear from the ward. You may believe doctors do this because they are arrogant and uncaring and that you won't do this as a doctor. You will. There's a reason doctor's do it. Also, a lot of Nurses believe that if a doctor is not in sight then they must just be sitting around, doing nothing, and waiting to be paged about the med chart that needs to be completed. I promise you that this is not the case.If you really think you'd like to be a doctor I'd suggest asking a friendly intern whether they'd mind you coming in your day off and following them around for a shift. You could also ask if they'd mind you following them on an overtime shift. If this idea fills you with horror - and you have no interest being at hospital longer than your usual Nursing shifts - then I'd reconsider being a doctor. Having to stay back after hours to finish your work, and work 14 hour overtime shifts, is a regular part of the job. Without in any way meaning to demean Nurses, once you have completed your medical degree, you will be horrified at the difference in workload as an intern compared with your current job. There are a LOT of reasons NOT to become a doctor. There are a lot of people who make it through the application process, and medical school, who regret their decsion and don't enjoy their job. Don't be tempted by mirages such as prestige and respect - Nurses get much more respect than doctors. Don't be tempted by money - Yes the pay is better than Nursing but it's not commensurate to the increased workload.Furthermore, the outlook for medicine seems to be continually deteriorating. The current Liberal government sees the Health system as an unnecessary expense - after all rich people can afford to pay for their healthcare - and they are trying to skim it of money at every opportunity. The pay for GPs - which hasn't kept pace with inflation for 30 years - has been frozen until 2018. With no signs they'll increase it then. Australia is rapidly approaching a two-tier medical system where the previously excellent health care available to everyone will only be available to those able to pay.Be aware, that the recent increase in medical schools is an attempt to force doctors into work that traditionally people do not want to do. It may be easier to get into a medical school these days - because there are more places available - but this makes it more difficult to get your ideal job at the other end. Colleges aren't automatically increasing their number of position to keep pace - after all, there needs to be places and people to teach new doctors. The increase in medical schools has done nothing to increase the people available to teach doctors once they have graduated. The opportunities to get into popular specialties and/or work in urban locations is getting more difficult. If you want to be a GP in rural Australia then your goal is certainly within reach. If you want to be a Cardiothoracic surgeon at a hospital in a capital city then I'd be more cautious looking any further into medicine. With the above said, if you know what's involved in becoming a doctor, and know that you want to do what doctors do each day, then by all means go for it! It's difficult but not even close to being impossible. If you have any further questions about the process then please don't hesitate to ask me.
