( long answer, read only when you have at least 5 minutes)Field work experienceI'm a masters student of Social work at Tata institute of social sciences, Mumbai. The course is designed in a way that all the first year students enrolled under School of Social Work have to go for field work twice a week. So it's a sync of theoretical learning in the classroom and it's practical implementation on the field.We are placed into multiple sectors except our specialisation. For example, I'm pursuing MSW in livelihoods and social entrepreneurship, so I will be placed in any other specialisation like disability studies, community organisation, criminology and justice etc, but not livelihoods. This gives us a picture of other areas too.I am placed at a juvenile/special home wherein two categories of children are placed : firstly, CNCP ( children in need in care and protection), the ones who are orphan, destitutes, and runaways.Secondly, CCL ( children in conflict with law) who have been misled & misguided and are now placed for reformation.All these children are sent here for a specific time period, once they complete 18 yrs of age, they have to leave anyway.We visit this place every Monday and Tuesday, and as part of our field work, we engage in activities like organising group sessions on aspirations, goals, confidence building, team spirit etc. Other than these groups activities we engage in individual conversation and counselling too. This way we get a better idea of the background these children come from and their dreams & desires. We also try for their rehabilitation through our agency.So this was the background of the setup where we are placed. Now I would like to share a specific experience which I bet, only TISS as a college can provide.There was a boy, Raju (name changed), under the CNCP category. He had run away from his home in 2014 and since then he has been in observation home only. The boy had low IQ and owing to his young age he wasn't able to tell the exact location of his home to police and the authorities.We(me and my Field partner) had a talk with him in one of the individual sessions. Then we found that since 2014 hardly any attempts have been made to find his parents. Call it lethargic behaviour or casualness. The probationary officer asked us to get the required permissions from the welfare department so that we can go ahead with the home tracing but that again was rejected as the PO had to personally seek this permission. Then again, the cash of EGO between government officials and who was at the sufferers end ? Raja.Imagine the plight of parents who are unaware of the fact that their son is alive or not and also the state of child who has not met his parents since 4 years.We decided to intervene again after few days and this time PO had the required permissions. So we decided to trace Raja's home and parents. There were 5 of us, including the boy. These many people for one boy because in case he escapes we'll have to answer to the welfare board.We also had to ensure that raja doesn't feel intimidated, so we were being casually alert. The moment we stepped out of the special home, there was change in raja’s expression. Obviously stepping out of walls after 4 years, seeing people, trains is not something easy to absorb. Here comes the effect on institutionalised children. We saw it that day. Somehow we went ahead with tracing. The only clue we had was a local railway station : “Nalasupara” and we were about to meet the policeman who had took raja in 4 years back.We met him at Borivali station, he also had only one clue : Santosh Bhavan.Now with two clues in hand : Nalasupara, Santosh Bhavan, 5 of us, with optimism continued our journey.We reached nalasupara and asked raja to guide us. He stood there for a minute and then started walking, we followed him untill he stopped near auto stand and said that we'll have to hire an auto. We did the same. We used the second clue now, Santosh Bhavan, fortunately one of the auto driver knew this place. He dropped us there. I remember while we were heading to Santosh Bhavan, Raja held his head after seeing everything. Maybe recalling the past and too much to take in.Once we reached Santosh Bhavan we were all dependent on Raja. He started walking and walking. We just followed him like sheep . After walking almost for 3–4 Kms we started getting this feeling that what if he's just not sure and we have just lost our way. But he assured that he's right. We had no option other than trusting him. Then there was end of the path, he took a turn and his steps started getting fast. We got scared that is he trying to run away, but we didn't react. And finally he stopped at a Madarsa. Probably he studied there.I stepped in, talked to one of the guys there. They asked me to bring in the boy and the moment they saw him, they were all shocked and mentioned that how they had all lost hope to see him again.The officials asked us to sit and sent someone to call Raja's mother. They further told us that his mother had knocked every door , every police station, even approached few babas, to get one lead on Raja but failed. And finally gave up all the hope. Raja's father also passed away last year. . Meanwhile people started gathering and kids were peeping through the window as if some celebrity had come.We waited waited and Raja was sitting right next to me. Suddenly we saw a skinny lean body making his way out of the crowd. He was. Raja's younger brother, I gave them some space and sat somewhere else. They both exchanged small talks and his brother with moist voice mentioned father passed away. Raja didn't cry, but started looking at one portion of the ceiling. No reaction. Nothing. Then his sister came, she was married now and she started crying the moment she saw him. She couldn't get inside as it wasn't allowed for women to enter that particular premise. Meanwhile other ladies of village had gathered and started Taunting raja that how his absence has worried Everyone and also his father passed away taking his tension. Hearing this my partner stood and asked them to be quiet or leave. They chose to stay there.Few hours passed and then there was his mother. She came with that hesitant walk, placing her hand over her heart and slowly slowly people made way for her. The moment she saw her, she stumbled, and entered straight into that space, here I witnessed the power of motherly love. Which sees no rules and regulations, she stormed Straight inside and no one dared to stop her. She hugged him tight, and next few minutes was to emotional to absorb. Almost everyone was in tears, including me. Such powerful scene it was.After few minutes, when almost every emotion settled, we briefed her about the procedure to bring him back. We shared the address of special home. And asked her to visit as soon as possible.Then we started leaving. Raja walked holding his mother's hand till the point we had to board auto. But all this time, there was a sense of satisfaction and pride. Something which you don't get to do everyday. And there are thousands of social workers working just like this, behind the curtains with no appreciation and acknowledgement, but that's the beauty of it. They never seek that.After a week, Raja's mother came and took him along. :)Just like us, there are many batch mates who are working in varied sectors ranging from women's right to disabilities, from education to Livelihoods. And their work and contribution is no less. We all strive everyday for a better society.That's what TISS offers.Challenges and opportunities to be different, do different.
