I was a lecturer at Berkeley for several years before I became a professor. During that time, I knew that my appointment was for a semester at a time. Whether I was re-hired depended not only on my performance, but on the needs of the department. I couldn't be fired, since I had no permanent job.At the time that I was a lecturer, there were others (I recall Dr. Andrew Buffington, for example) who were not renewed. Andrew was upset, but he knew the terms. It was an honor to be a lecturer at an institution such as U.C. Berkeley, not a right.As for excellence in teaching, my experience -- in the physics department, and as a member for many years on the committee that awarded teaching awards across the university -- is that the university truly values and rewards excellent teaching. But the idea of a university is that you need more than good teaching; you need the teachers to be the acknowledged experts in their fields. That is different than in a teaching college. There is an extra dimension to teaching that is brought about by having a world-class expert answering questions that is often not reflected in student evaluations.
