This answer is based on my experiences doing similar things in California (USA) for companies based in California and Florida. Your local jurisdiction (Country/State/County/City) may have different laws/requirements than the area I operate in does. Thus, you need to check with the local authorities and tax agencies to make sure you have set things up correctly.The following is what I did/was asked to do when I started freelancing.The customer will generally hire you as a contractor and give you a 1099 form at tax time. You will need to provide a filled out and signed IRS W9 form in order for the company to generate the 1099.You will also need to have an agreement/contract with the company that defines when you get paid, how you will be paid, your rate/compensation for the work and what the work to be done is. The agreement also spells out who you send the invoice to.Do the work, invoice for it and hope you get paid on time. I would advise conducting business with written correspondence (emails is ok) and get paid by check. Phone calls and meetings should be followed up with a written summary and any tasks/deliverables/changes to specs and/or deliverables. That way there’s a paper trail if something goes wrong.You may find it useful to require a retainer/up front payment for some percentage of the expected cost of the work. This depends on your cash on hand situation.In addition to the above steps, I took some steps to make it easier for me to take other non-contact worker business opportunities, but that’s out of scope for this question.
