PDF Editor FAQ

What surprised you about the rioting at the Capitol on January 6, 2021?

I was not surprised by the assault. I am surprised they got into the Capitol. They had every reason to see it coming. And I am surprised that other people are so surprised. I live in Oregon. In Oregon armed people took over the Malheur Wildlife Refuge 5 years ago. January 2, 2016. I woke up that morning and watched it on television, people were calling in expressing amazement that the protestors were not stopped, that they were allowed to seize government property. Many people commented that if the people were “Black” they would probably have been killed. They held it for 40 days. They voiced anti-government, libertarian and militant views normally associated with people on the far right of the political spectrum. They destroyed property, they stole property, they kept law enforcement busy, they tied up our prosecutors in court. The occupation was led by Ammon and Ryan Bundy. Federal prosecutors threw soft-ball charges at them and most got acquitted, including Ammon Bundy and Ryan Bundy. President Trump later pardoned convicted terrorists Dwight Hammond and Steven Hammond, whose conviction had sparked the mini-insurrrection. As Trump Pardons the Hammonds, Look Back on the Role Their Case Played in the Malheur Occupation. I discussed the difference between the treatment of Malheur occupation and the far-left Environmental Liberation Front “terrorists” in another Quora Answer. Jeffrey Rosas's answer to Is it time to label Antifa as a domestic terrorist group in the US?Their father, Cliven Bundy, was at the center of a Nevada dispute a couple years ealier over grazing cattle on public land without paying fees, which culminated in an armed stand-off between Federal agents and armed citizens. The police backed down. Again, these were right-leaning citizens. This year in April, in Michigan, armed right-wing demonstrators entered the Michigan State Capitol. This was immediately after Donald Trump “tweeted” that they should rise up. It was not illegal to carry firearms in that building, but that was a little more ominous that just people carrying guns. Granted, covid 19 masks were in fashion at the time. And in December, 6 men were indicted for a plot to kidnap the Michigan Governor and try her for treason.Oregon had people break into our Capitol, too, by the way. Here’s our Capitol on December 21, 2020:Trump signs and flags and MAGA hats. They kicked in Glass doorsAnd they sprayed bear mace at police officers in Salem. And most did it without masks, showing their faces. And apparently a Republican lawmaker is accused of opening another door for them. WATCH: Security video shows Oregon lawmaker opening door to state Capitol, letting demonstrators in building. And this was over Covid closures by a Democratic Oregon governor, house, and senate in a State Trump lost in 2016 and 2020, not the change in the National presidency. So why would anyone be surprised that people came to Washington two weeks later to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power? The insurrectionists rode airplanes; they showed ID to board the planes. They bought tickets, probably with credit cards to get airline miles and cash back. They discussed their plans online. They rented hotel rooms. The federal intelligence community had to know about it. Where is the Deep State when we need it?I watched it happen on television. Many people commented at the time and since that if it had been “black” people the reaction would have been much more violent. Hmm. I swear I’ve heard that somewhere.I am also surprised they got access to the Capitol. I worked in Washington in the summer of 1992 and I remember having to pass through security, and that was before the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, and even before the attempted destruction of the World Trade Center in 1993.Anyway, to the rest of the country, welcome to our reality. Finally, I am surprised that someone shot a Trump supporting woman. In Oregon we had demonstrations all summer long after George Floyd’s murder. Most nights some angry idiots broke windows and threw firecrackers and painted on walls of the federal courthouse. Hundreds of people were arrested Trump sent federal agents in July, then retracted them after Oregon politicians objected. In August Trump supporters in pickup trucks drove through downtown Portland, many sprayed bear mace at people on the sidewalks, shot them with paintballs, drove through red lights and made people in crosswalks scatter. No masks, license plates showing, tons of video. To my knowledge none of the Trump supporters were prosecuted. And shortly after that, Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin and Michael (thank you, Quoran Skye Sodja, for the edit) Reinoehl in Portland each killed people at political protests. Each claimed self defense. Kyle Rittenhouse went to jail and got millions of dollars from people around the country through Trump crony L. Lin Wood and is going to have his day in Court. President Trump weighed in and said Kyle acted in self defense. Trump defends Kyle Rittenhouse on eve of visit to Kenosha Michael Reinoehl’s victim was associated with Patriot Prayer. Trump called for swift action. Law enforcement tracked Michael Reinoehl to Lacey, Washington and gunned him down. Witnesses say no words were exchanged, they did not even announce themselves as police. Trump boasted about sending the Marshalls and said, among other things, “they did not want to arrest him” and “there has to be retribution. "There has to be retribution": Trump’s chilling comments about extrajudicial killings, briefly explainedSo based on several years of watching people identified as “left” get arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned, and people identified as “right” get to pull guns on law enforcement and walk away, or if arrested, get acquitted and pardoned, and I was pretty much of the opinion that there was one standard for the leftist rioters and another for the rightist rioters, and I am pretty sure the rightist rioters were under the same impression. Consider Elizabeth from Knoxville Tennessee who indignantly told a reporter she got maced in the Capitol, and when asked why she was in the Capitol, explained “I was storming the Capitol, it was the revolution” as though it should be completely obvious to everyone.I think people on the right have been under the mistaken impression that right-wing protestors support the police, that Trump is the “law and order” president. I have pointed out that the right wingers are more anti-police than are the left. In Oregon on December 21 they maced law enforcement. In Washington DC on January 6, they murdered law enforcement. And while neither side wants more law enforcement, that is going to be the end result.

Have you ever been treated so poorly at work that you left without notice and never returned? What were the circumstances that caused you to leave, and did anyone say anything after you left?

Yep. UP fu-king S.It started with training. Due to the current pandemic, most of our training was online (at a UPS sort facility, which defeats the purpose.) The actual behind the wheel training took place off site. In my case 15 E Oregon Ave, Philadelphia, PA.I live in Catonsville, MD. And I had to be there at 7AM.So, 7AM start time. Two and a half hour drive. Factor in 30 minutes to get up, eat breakfast, and get my uniform on. Add in another 15 minutes to make sure I'm not late. I ended up setting my alarm for 3:45 AM. And I'm a night owl who didn't fall asleep until after midnight.Oh, and most of the other members of my class got sent to closer locations. And after going there and spending six hours doing more online training and an hour behind the wheel, I still had to drive home. All in my personal vehicle, burning my gas, which I never received the promised reimbursement for. Nor anything whatsoever for all the EZ pass tolls on 95.Anyway, the next week, I'm assigned to mycenter in Baltimore. It was not the center I applied to, it was on the other side of the city. Cue tolls for the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. The first two weeks weren't that bad; I was being trained by my supervisor. “Trained" as in he'd give me a package and I'd speed walk (but never run, heaven forbid) it to the door.As soon as I was let out on my own, this started happening:IIRC, I was supposed to park the truck, find a package in that mess (they have a sorting system which the loaders completely ignore,) scan it, drop it at the door, and be back in the truck within 30 seconds. Most of my stops had yards that took more than 30 seconds to cross, nevermind finding a package when you physically can't get into the back of the truck (without violating safety rules and climbing.)And those trucks have ZERO ventilation back there. Nothing like roasting in a 130+F truck while searching for packages.Speaking of packages, most of the large ones, marked “two person lift only" were frequently larger and heavier than I was. Did you know people order matresses and hardwood desks online?I commonly had “live harmless reptiles” in my truck. Now, I've a soft spot for reptiles, and leaving an animal with no ability whatsoever to thermoregulate in the oven that was my truck would have been animal cruelty. After the damn next day air packages (which I'd be charged for if they were not delivered by 10:30AM) were off the truck, I'd get any animals to their destinations. Management threw a fit over my “unnecessary” back tracking to deliver them. (Yeah, fu-k you, too, a$$hole.)The pay, $20/hr to start, is what attracted me to the job. Too bad HR screwed up my direct deposit three times in under a month, to include one case where they tried to pay me for only half the hours worked.Speaking of hours, when I interviewed, I was under the impression I'd be working in the vicinity of eight hours a day. It ended up being more like 14 hours six days a week. After finishing the run, it was time for my “lunch" break, usually around 9PM (I started at 8.) I could take lunch earlier, if I actually had the time. And I couldn't just leave after getting back. Its not likemy lunch break was unpaid or anything. Factor in my commute and running errands after work, and I'd get, maybe, five hours of sleep. Free time was nonexistent.Lets also not forget idiot loaders who can't comprehend written English:This package was stamped RTS: return to sender. This was reloaded on my truck for a week straight. The Soda Pop Shoppe was where it was dropped off to be shipped back. Rather than shipping it back, they just kept piling on new labels.UPS cares more about its truck than its people; a minor scratch suffered at their own facility was grounds for termination. And such scratches are bound to happen when you're trying to squeeze a 20+ft truck into a narrow aisle, with less than six inches clearance on either side and columns right in the middle of the aisle. Would've been nice if they had me practice that a few times in training. Hell, shooting a VOR approach in IMC condition as a student pilot (who technically shouldn't be flying in those conditions, though an instrument rated pilot was in the left seat) is easier than parking a UPS truck at their sort facilities.Hope you didn't order a package that required a signature but weren't there when we delivered. If that is the case, COVID-19 signed for your package. If your package is missing, please consult with the person who signed for it. (Which I was explicitly told to do by my supervisor.)The most damning of all is the treatment of their employees. My last day, we had a heat wave. I had drunk all the water I had brought with me, and, being broke (as HR screwed up my deposit and I couldn't buy any,) I began to suffer from heat exhaustion. As I started to get tunnel vision, with my entire GI tract feeling as if it was about to explode, and my skin dry (which should've been drenched in sweat,) I began to suffer from the latest stages of heat exhaustion (just before you pass out from heat stroke. Being someone who was trained by both the Civil Air Patrol and the American Red Cross (wilderness first aid,) I went about treating myself. Step 1: remove excess clothing.I took off the brown UPS button up shirt I was wearing, exposing the indecency of a plain white v-neck t-shirt. (Its not like I had my balls dangling out of the truck.) Fortunately, management put out a stop work order anout a monute latter and I retirned to the sort facility. I went into the conference room (which doubled as a break room and was one of the few A/C places in the building,) took off my boots and socks, and collapsed on the floor after punching out for my lunch break. An hour later, now cooled to a survivable temperature, I put the UPS shirt back on, punched inand then immediately back out, and started walking for my car only to be intercepted and written up by a supervisor other than my own. I'm sorry for having the audacity to apply basic first aid techniques to myself. Two days latter, a Monday, I, for some unknown reason, decided to go in. Admittedly, I was running five minutes late. By the time I got to my truck, it was empty. There was no way in Hell they transfered my packages to other trucks as well as electronically updated the manifests on multiple DIADs (which have a connect speed that makes dial up look like Fios.) They simply decided not to load it in the first place. Nor to inform me before I drove all tje way there. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I punched out, placed the DIAD into its charging rack, and went home.A bit of research revealed that UPS has an abysmally high turnover rate. New hires are set up to fail. Why? To limit the union's power. New hires don't get protection until they have been with the company for a month. So UPS works on a revolving door: ensure no new hires actually stay long enough to join the union. Find a reason to terminate them and/or drive them out.

Do you know any genuine work from home companies which pays well?

The ones I’m aware of which are genuine are:Medical coding and billingUPS dispatcher (I’m not kidding!)To be a UPS dispatcher, you have to let them put in a separate phone line, you have to have anInternet connection, an you have to be a member of the Teamsters Union(!) — again, not kidding! — because everyone who works for the company, with few exceptions, is required to drive a truck for 2 weeks a year.So all the lifting requirements, etc..I have a dinky little sister who could probably lift a bus over a hedge, she exercises constantly. maybe 105 pounds, dense muscle. She was a Teamster, and did dispatch from home using the described setup. And two weeks a year: she drove the truck. Most “work from home!” advertisements — especially the ones you see online — are scams, or they are drop-shipping web sites, where you set up a “store” and sell their products, and they tell you 10% of the products you will carry in your store, and then they give you a cut of the profits, and that way you look like a little boutique-y online store, when you are merely a facet of this massive corporate conglomerate who imports from China and has drop-ship centers in states like Texas and Florida and Nevada, and Oregon, where they don’t have to pay income tax. That’s the ones where you get paid.Others are just using trans-shipping that they can’t legitimately set up with a mailbox company — like Mailboxes, Etc. — because they’re engages in interstate mail fraud, and you are a member of their money laundering division. But medical coding and billing tends to be legit, and shipping dispatcher is, from my experience watching my sister sit there and do it — is legit.Mostly: don’t expect to work from home, unless you have a separate home office, where you can lock the family out, and is relatively sound-proofed — and you own your own business.
