There are benefits and drawbacks to living here. I was born and raised here and view myself as stuck. I don’t experience a lot of the things that some others have mentioned such as there being a lot of restaurants and nightlife.Long, interminable bus ridesMost residential, rather than commercial, neighborhoods in NYC are on bus lines as opposed to train lines. Some examples include Co Op City, Mt Vernon, Eastchester, Bayside, Ozone Park, Brownsville, and Stapleton. Although I’m on a train line it’s by no means close to Manhattan.The train and bus rides for the vast majority of people can consume up to 4 hours a day of time so you better have the Kindle PDF reader. If you don’t use the john before heading out, you’re screwed. When you take the subway in Philly / Camden the length of time you spend on the train is much shorter and you can usually get a seat.Conservative social valuesWe may have a lot of diversity but all this means is that people insulate themselves from one another on a cultural level.NYC is by no means more racially or culturally diverse than any other place with a lot of migrants such as Chicago, Miami or Houston. If you drive out of NYC and to places like Edison you will meet way more minorities and the way of life is also better.Social attitudes are also different. Religious preachers are everywhere and they have bullhorns. A New Age psychic fair was attacked by a massive group of religious people as well.Expensive rent costs and mortgageThis is the same as any California residential areas like Fremont or Orange County. In my area, a house can cost up to $100,000. That’s a lot of money and it sucks. However tons of people live in HUD Projects (NYCHA) where very little money is paid as long as you work off the books.The majority of residential units are not large apartment buildings. Most people live in standalone or stuck together houses. Here is a normal house in my area.Most houses say “Fedders”. You will probably pay half a million for this crappy house below. There is usually a fig tree on the property because people in NYC like to eat figs. People wrap fig and pomegranate trees in garbage bags in the winter time and grow wax gourds in a bucket with a rope tied to the window.Clothes and Food are CheaperClothes and food are significantly cheaper here, while rent is higher. I can get a shirt for $1.99 or a buttoned work shirt for $4.99 at any men or women store in a residential area. Meanwhile if you go to other places, like Jersey, they make you pay 10 dollars which is insane. I also go to junk shops where the clothes are 50 cents to a dollar.Food is also more affordable although most folks bring their own. The 50 cent Fast Bites sandwich at gas stations and in dollar stores is famous, there’s also unique fast food like halal carts which cost the same as Mcdonalds but give you twice the amount of food.People can also get churros (similar to, like the Chinese fry dough sticks) and Mexican snack cakes inside the train station. Outside of NYC it’s mostly Mcdonalds and other national chains.In some areas geared toward various nationalities you can get different foods. There was a booth where I got lo mein for 50 cents around 2004. It may be 75 cents now but I don’t know if it has crossed the dollar Rubicon. Some areas have Jamaican patties made fresh.Kebab rice plate, this is large enough to feed 3 people and has a lot of meat, not just a little. Get them to add a piece of bread you can stretch it out even more.Buying churros inside the train stationIce cream cart (sherbet)Garbage and Tin Can CollectorsThere are a ton of garbage and tin can collectors roaming throughout the city after dark. After the city passed a condom act I have never heard of anyone buying commercially made condoms. I first saw this condom during college. I think even most people’s parents use it, gross lol. It’s available in schools and public hospitals.High stakes exam for high school and college, similar to other countriesNot only do you have to take tests to get into high school, but when you get into college it doesn’t even end there. I’ve heard of kids being forced into years of remedial classes because they screwed up on the Cuny Assessment Test.Most cars are hooptiesThe cart is your main vehicleLet’s keep it real, most people who live here will never own even a hooptie. The majority of people including myself have this cart. Most people nail hooks to the door to hang it up. I know someone in a really small apartment who hangs it on his bathroom door.Kids Never Get Driver’s License, Instead, Series 7 Is Your Rite of PassageSome students do get driver’s licenses such as the CDL (truck license), because there is a free CDL study guide distributed in some libraries. But the rite of passage par excellence for NYC kids is Series 7. You have to get sponsored in a job or internship to take this stock brokers test and then you can try to get more money.Obnoxious Rich People in the North Bronx and South Staten IslandThe North Bronx and parts of Queens contain obnoxious rich people in their 20s and 30s who used to heckle my friends for being weebs or fat. They drive these souped up cars.The guys in the pic are Spanish but these kids come in all ethnicities. They blast all kinds of music like EDM, reggae, reggaeton and socca from their souped up cars.Most common snacksDVD Vendors Are EverywhereFujianese DVD vendors can be found in restaurants like McDonalds, White Castle, in laundromats, and grocery stores. They sell DVDs for 2 dollars on the day that they arrive in movie theaters. Sometimes they have other stuff as well.HustlersHustlers come out at night. Unlike the other categories of NYC peddlers, the vast majority of them were born and raised in America. They steal Tide detergent and try to sell it for silly prices like $20.
