First, I would like to thank Alan Wilcox for bringing this question to my attention and asking for my response. This is a question that just about every prospective entrepreneur asks themselves and others. One of the lessons I learned as an entrepreneur and non-commissioned officer in the military is that we are not the best judges of our capabilities and ideas. Another lesson I learned very early on is that friends and family are not good judges of our ideas. Bias is an entrepreneur’s worst enemy, we tend not to think of our own ideas as bad, and friends and family tend to want to be supportive so they may not provide correct assessments of your idea/s. On Sep 20, 2016, Gericke Potgieter asks a very applicable question, “How do you know your idea is excellent?” Gericke accurately points out that if you cannot validate and prove your assumption, “an excellent idea for a startup,” you will not obtain funding from Venture Capitalists (VCs) and Seasoned Qualified Investors which is where the real money is. But how do you get their attention and convince them to invest in your “Idea” becomes the issue prospective entrepreneurs must deal with.While friends and family may invest in an “idea,” VCs and seasoned qualified investors will not without some validated proof and a written business plan. Tim Berry, Founder of Palo Alto Software, provided some excellent advice in his response on Jun 4, 2016. VCs and investors want to see a plan, teams, defined markets, traction, scalability, defensibility, and milestones. So, in order to get their money, prospective entrepreneurs have to learn how to give VCs and Investors what they want. This is what I consider the first milestone that prospective entrepreneurs need to achieve not just with their business ideas, but with their entrepreneurial career as well. An entrepreneur who cannot write a business plan will most likely not succeed as an entrepreneur and in establishing successful, sustainable business ventures. So how do you get VCs and Investors to invest in your business idea? With a convincing written business plan. So how do you write a convincing business plan for your business idea?When it comes to writing a business plan for your business idea most prospective entrepreneurs become intimidated by and with the process. Therefore, I consider this one of the first milestones that prospective entrepreneurs must achieve and overcome. Thankfully, there are plenty of examples and templates available to help with the process. I recommend using the free business plan template that can be obtained from the Small Business Administration’s website sba.gov. That is the easy part, the hard part is getting over the intimidation of the plan and process. How prospective entrepreneurs overcome business plan and process intimidation and confusion is through implementation and use of wise mentorship/advisors from the very beginning. This is a proven Biblical, Scientific, Time-Tested, Historically Verified process that greatly improves overall success rates, sustainability, and profitability, and reduces overall risks, cast, and waist. It should be notes that while the benefits of wise mentorship & advisors are great, they don’t guarantee success. Well, 2 years ago, just 2 years after retiring from military, I quit a fine job in Bavarian Alps to pursue music degree through online program, and moved to a developing country (Montenegro) so I could live off retirement income while studying fulltime. My girlfriend decided to uproot her 7 year old son so that we could live together in Montenegro vs traveling to/from Montenegro and Russia every month or so as we were doing previously to/from Germany and Russia. The child went into local school system, learned Serbian, but we know this country isn’t for us. We are now planning next move. Probably Vienna, but who knows. I am trying to figure out how to monetize my music skills, have some ideas but not a solid plan.And… none of this bothers me at all. Every day I wake up and am so thankful I decided to live life not according to a template along the lines of which most people live their lives. My girlfriend worries about her son, but he is resilient, stubborn and having lived abroad and acquired a foreign language is never a bad thing and is remarkable for the brain. Plus knowing Serbian in Austria will be a plus for him later on as there are lots of Austrian-Serbian ventures. So experiencing life this way is only going to be an asset for him even if he doesn’t realize it yet, as I think there are more and more people looking to hire those who haven’t lived conventional, boring lives.
