I moved back from a Manager role to a Technical role in an Indian IT company.If the question is why do Indian IT employees intend to progress/grow as managers instead of technical roles, below is not the answer. This answer is why managers move away from technical skills.As a manager, you’re so busy with the operations and project management that you hardly get time to use, polish and renew your technical skills.Most of the middle managers in the Indian IT do not sit idle or browse on trading portals, do chatting on mobiles as most of the freshers/developers perceive. Of course, there’d be some lazy foxes as would be in other levels.As a manager leading a 45 member team, half of my day would go in daily Operations -(Budgeting, Reporting, Staffing, Billing & Invoicing, Approvals, writing/editing SoWs, CRs, etc. A quarter of the day would go in Project Management - Metrics, Quality reports (Milestones, Productivity, CoQ, etc.), Requests creation/management, Task allocation & tracking, Project Plan (MPP/Internal tools, Estimates), Escalations, Status Reports, Client Communication, Procurement of space & hardware, etc. Another quarter of the day would go in People Management like Approvals for leaves, on-duty, Performance Appraisals, Hearing to team’s aspirations, Conflict resolution,On-boarding, Separations, Interviewing potential replacements, etc.In addition, there would be ad-hoc works like RFPs (Proposals), Client Visits, ODC Management, BCP/BCMS (Business Continuity), TownHall preparations, Interviews on weekends…On an average of 30 minutes for each person, it took me 20 hours or 3 full days to just have an Appraisal conversation with each of my team. Later, we had to spend time in filling the forms in the system, meetings with the higher managers on determining and begging/bargaining for good ratings for the team.Now, you tell where’s the time for the managers to be upto date with the latest trends.

Yes, you should be very happy that nearly 800,000 people will no longer be arrested each year (according to FBI Uniform Crime Statistics) for marijuana-related crimes, more than 700,000 of which are arrested for simple personal possession of marijuana. That fact alone should make anyone quite happy, since we're talking about overwhelmingly nonviolent offenders whose entire lives get changed for the worst simply because the government wants to tell you not to consume a plant that makes you euphoric for a while and that has no serious negative side effects for the vast majority of people.You should also be happy about the time, energy, and enormous sums of money that will be saved when the nation stops spending your tax dollars to find, arrest, and incarcerate people for growing and consuming a plant that makes them euphoric for a while. Law enforcement will be able to focus more of their attention on actual violent crimes that go unsolved or unprevented. Perhaps the money saved from ending marijuana arrests and prosecutions and incarcerations could be redirected to test all of those rape kits that the police never bother to test, for example.You should also be happy that you and your friends won't have to worry about losing your student loans, being kicked out of college, being denied housing, losing public assistance services if you ever became unemployed or poor to the extent you needed help buying food or paying rent, being put into a jail cell where you get sexually assaulted by another inmate, and so on.You should be happy that people for whom marijuana provides relief from serious medical conditions will finally be able to use it without fear of incarceration or -- literally -- death (my wife and I have friends and associates who have died after being arrested on marijuana charges and denied access to marijuana to treat their illnesses; and several prominent cases exist of medical marijuana patients who were arrested and subsequently died while in custody).You should be happy that the sheer hypocrisy of marijuana prohibition is ending, since faith in the rule of law is subverted when a government lies to its population to pretend a substance is dangerous and prohibited when the truth is it's mild compared to most other drugs, many of which are legal -- alcohol, tobacco, prescription narcotics, sleep medication, over the counter drugs like Tylenol, etc all are more dangerous than marijuana (demonstrably so).So, there are many reasons that everyone should be very excited and happy that our nation's long, absurd, immoral, failed prohibition laws against marijuana appear to finally be coming to an end.
