How does UMich compare with UChicago?

I am a recent graduate of UMich and but I have a couple of friends at Chicago I've visited before. I'll still give you an unbiased answer. The 2 are both very good schools but they are also very different, almost complete opposites. Here is a comparison of the 2 schools:The University of ChicagoMore of an elite, Ivy-League kind of liberal arts institution that regularly ranks in the top 5-10 in the nationThe MIT of liberal arts: Offers a more limited selection of academic programs (almost all liberal arts and humanities) but all are very rigorous and ranked among the top in the nation There are no specialized programs like engineering and business. Those who want to go into a technical career often major in physics and/or math and those who want to end up in finance major in economics.Very low average GPA (I'm pretty sure it's below 3.0)Students are a bit "nerdy" and enjoy intelligent conversation on academic related topicsAcceptance rate below 8%5.5k Undergraduate student body size gives more opportunities for interaction between students and facultyThe focus seems to be more on pursing a higher education (Masters/Phd) than entering a career immediately after graduation. Many major companies do recruit students but in the classroom the focus is more on theoretical rather than practical knowledge.Chicago is a huge city but campus is located in Hyde Park, a quieter neighborhood in the South Side of the city about a 20-25 min train ride from downtown, which has many world-class museums and other attractionsSocial scene is mostly hanging out with floormates in the dorms or going to a house party at an off campus apartment. There is a small greek life scene.Culture is more based on tradition. It has a unique housing system in which students are placed into "houses" their first year like in Harry Potter. Most students live with people in their house throughout their 4 years and form deep friendships. The University of MichiganA big state school offering a wide number of highly rated academic programs as well as a big sports scene that is usually in the top 20-30 in the nationOffers a larger variety of academic programs, many of which are highly rated. Offers specialized programs such as engineering and business but you must apply to them separately. The engineering school and science programs are very rigorous, with the average GPA being less than 3.0. However, grades in arts, humanities and business programs tend to be a bit more inflated.Students tend to be more well-rounded and social, having interests outside of the classroom such as sports or dance. Greek life has a bigger presence.Acceptance rate is about 25%28k Undergraduates student body size means there's more competition for research opportunities (preference is given to masters/PhD students), jobs, internships, etc and lectures are usually very large so it's up to you to seek out help in class if needed as you're just a number. Many more companies come (including bigger tech companies) actively recruit students at the career fairs.Ann Arbor is a college town that caters to the students of the university with many bars, and restaurants.Social life is mostly based off greek life during the first 1-2 years then house parties and bars later.Culture is based more on big sporting events, being a Big 10 school. Before every home football game, many houses on campus throw big tailgates, parties with a ton of alcohol and food. Other than this, there aren't too many traditions. In summary, if you want a college with a more diverse student body (as in personalities), a big sports scene, and numerous opportunities available, Michigan is probably the better choice. If you are more academic/intellectual and want a tighter-knit community with resources that are more readily available, Chicago is the better option.

What are the best reasons to attend Wayne State?

I know quite a few people who have attended both MSU and UMich, and here are the differences in experiences I have observed:At Wayne, you’re in the most economically important city/region in the state. You can intern at a Fortune 500 company, WHILE you go to school and not just in the summer. That also eliminates a lot of concern about housing and the like for internships that rich students don’t often think about. Engineers, medicine, social work, business and law students have all said they had similar experiences at Wayne (and from other schools, have not had this experience). The surrounding city is incredible. Nightlife is amazing, not just student bars and house parties. Raves, plays, festivals, all types of live music. Everything is here and on a larger scale than the other cities. Those cities have hipsters? We even have dedicated hipster venues, so they don’t just invade punk shows, trying to be edgy. Speaking of that, we have 6ish dedicated punk venues. Many for hip-hop, 3ish for jazz. 2ish for world music. dozens for rap and electronic (RIP Russel Industrial Center). We have a lot of everything. In Lansing, we try to find something to cool in the weekend. In Detroit we have many choices every day of the week.Student employment pays better at Wayne State (last I knew). At Wayne, $10/hour is standard, MSU pays minimum wage (unless the job is so awful, that they have to pay more to prevent turnover problems).Tuition is lower (this may change). The fees you pay at Wayne are smaller and less ridiculous in nature. ($25 a semester for free fitness at Wayne vs. $400 a semester for hidden utility costs to live in the dorms at MSU)Housing costs are lower (keep in mind Detroit has much more variance in how good the area is vs. East Lansing/Lansing/Okemos/Haslett and Ann Arbor). I live within walking distance off campus for $500 a month for a big two bed room place by myself. Walking distance from campus at MSU was ~$800/month last I knew. Ann Arbor ~$700 to be anywhere near it. Note: MSU and UMich have excellent public transit, while Detroit does not.Housing is much less competitive in Detroit. I know MSU’s housing is typically sold out ~10 months before the academic year begins. I hear UMich is bad, too. I moved into my place in Detroit ~2 weeks before the school year began. Most things in Detroit are cheaper, actually. Some of the nicest restaurants I have been to ever have been in Detroit and cost me less than a sit down meal elsewhere in Michigan. The only exceptions are auto insurance and utilities. We lead the nation in vehicle related crime and our utility company is Fortune 500 (thats all you need to know about DTE…)People in Detroit are a level of friendly that you won’t see elsewhere. I have become more entrenched in many different scenes here than I ever did in Lansing/East Lansing. I have made a lot of really great friends here, too.The fitness center is free with tuition as are all fitness and sporting facilities.Item 1 should be your biggest consideration. Many people I know who went to MSU and UMich are stuck in entry level jobs they had through college because they didn’t intern anywhere due to financial reasons (moving costs, paying rent in two places, etc).Really, I am a data scientist with a bachelors only with the company (was Fortune 500 before it went private last year) I interned with senior year. I would need a PhD had I not been in a place where I could ram my foot into the door like this. I save a lot of money staying in my old college apartment.Item 2 is also very strongly worth considering.

Did your Harvard education pay off for you financially? Not every Harvard graduate gets a high-paying job, so this is why I'm asking.

the return on any college degree depends on the person receiving it. wealthy kids attending Ivys may never worry about money. they may join the family company & spend their career there, no matter what they studied as an undergrad. My husband (Harvard ‘64) & I have a nice house near campus in Ann Arbor. Both of our sons went to better schools (UMich & WashU) & have carved out decent careers. Better than they would have done at Harvard.
