My husband being a doctor was in the frontline and hence got affected by the Corona virus.My husband had been meeting my father in law regularly who is 82 years old who also got affected by the deadly virus. Thankfully my mother in law, my elder son and myself were not affected. My younger son was affected by the virus but he was asymptomatic. So with the experience of 3 Covid positive cases within my family I am writing this.When you go for Covid tests, there are antibody tests available which give results immediately. So my husband got the antibody test done. The test turned negative. So he thought he was negative and continued with his daily routine. First of all the antibody tests are not very reliable. Secondly the antibody test would show positive only if the person is affected for a longer duration say atleast 5 days or more. So get the Covid test done instead of any short cuts.In the Covid test they insert a cotton swab which looks like an ear bud into the nose. They insert it really deep inside. It doesn't pain but it is slightly irritating. But it is tolerable. Similarly they also take sample from your throat.Hospitals are literally minting money doing Covid tests. Some hospitals have a rule that you need to be admitted for 3 days to get the Covid test done. The bill would obviously run into lakhs. Some hospitals insist on a full Covid checkup which includes chest CT SCAN and blood profile and charge you nearly 13000 Rs (INR). We initially went to these hospitals and got the test done for our family members.Later we found there are some hospitals who charge nominally only for the Covid test and the charges are Rs 2900 which we availed for tests of other family members. The government hospitals do it free of cost but we didn't go there because we thought they will be too crowded. In Arogya Setu app, you can see the list of ICMR approved hospitals. They are linked to Google maps and tou can get directions to the hospital. You can also search for the phone number of the hospital and enquire about the charges from the hospital.Symptoms - fever, dry cough, cold, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of smell and taste, breathlessness. It affects people differently. One could have some or all the symptoms. For my husband it was severe and he had most of the above symptoms. My father in law had breathlessness and his oxygen saturation levels went down to 90. So he had to be admitted and given oxygen support. It's also because of age factor. He was also administered 5 doses of remdesivir.Most important points to consider if someone within the family is affected by Corona virusKeep checking temperature at regular intervals - atleast 4 to 6 times a dayThere is no treatment or cure for the virus. But one has to monitor oxygen saturation levels regularly. Some people may not have shortness breath but may actually not have sufficient oxygen levels in their bodies. So it is very important to check he oxygen saturation levels regularly. Have a finger based oxymeter at home. The pulse oxymeter is the need of the hour. This is available online. If the saturation levels fall below 92 take them to the hospital immediately. They made need oxygen support. If oxygen levels are fine and there is no other serious symptoms there is no need for hospitalization. If everybody gets hospitalized then there won't be enough beds for the needy. So home quarantine is sufficient.MedicationWe used only general flu medicines like Vicks Action 500, antihistamines like cetrizine, paracetamol, azythromycin, benadryl cough syrup etc. Massaging any pain balm like amritanjan or vicks on the temples, forehead, chest, neck and backside helps. Doctors advice NOT to use Brufen for Covid. We are not sure of it is correct but when my husband's headache and fever was too severe/high he used Ipubrufen and it didn't do anything. But not sure if it will react same way for everyone.Taking steam inhalation helps very much. It is better to use a nebulizer which goes directly to lungs and may clear the infection in lungs. Taking steam using hot water or in a vessel can only clear the nose. It may not go to lungs. So usage of nebulizer is advisable. One needs to use saline water in a nebulizer. You can also add some mint oil or equilyptus oil, etcGargling with Luke warm salt water has to be done atleast 6 times a day by the affected person.In India, many ayurvedic medicines are available. The Nilavembu kashayam is used when there is fever. Boil Nilavembu powder in 200 ml of water and it should reduce to 50 ml. Consume morning and evening.There are some preventive medicines like Kabasura kashayam (similar way of usage like nilavembu) / kalmegh extracts (available in the form of tablets). Consumption of these helps in developing immunity and it is also said that it reduces the severity of the disease.We used to have Thulasi juice by boiling Thulasi, Ajwain or Voma, dhania, ginger, lemon grass, pepper and mixing honey and consume.There are also ayurvedic medicines like pankaja kasthuri, Chavanparash, Vitamin C tablets which help increase immunity. These can be consumed during the tough times of pandemic and even regularly. I have been consuming these regularly. I am not sure if I didn't get infected because these increased my immunity levels.Pranayama helps in clearing the nose and expanding the lungs. So it is advisable to do some basic pranayam like deep breathing, Anulom vilom, kapalabhatti, bastrika , bramari pranayam.Similarly I heard jal neti is very useful. This can be done by everyone.If someone in your family is affected, make sure that everybody in the family wears masks - both the infected person and the people who are not affected by the virus.If it is possible ensure infected person doesn't come out of their room so that exposure to others is minimised.Give a separate plate, glass, spoon to the infected person and ask them to clean their utensils after usage. If they are too sick and can't wash their used utensils, they can soak the vessels in a bucket of water with any antiseptic solution like Dettol/ Savlon. Serve food to the infected person on his / her plate without touching the plate or glass.If they can't wash their own clothes, they can soak their clothes in antiseptic solution mixed with water. If someone else washes the clothes or utensils of the infected person, it is important they wash their hands immediately with soap for a minimum duration of 20 seconds. And ensure not to touch your face without washing your hands. Washing hands every now and then is important.Ensure that the infected person doesn't touch objects like TV remotes, fan/light switches, door handles, fridge / microwave. Most common mistakes is exchange of mobile phones which must be avoided. If they want to operate TV or any common things, they have to wear gloves. People who are not affected by the virus should always ensure to wash their hands if they touch common things like TV remotes, door handles, switches, mobile phone etc.It is better that the infected person uses his own washroom and nobody else uses the same washroom of the infected person.General precautions to takeTry not to go outside if it is not necessary. There is a very thin line of difference between bravery and foolishness. Don't be in the other side of the line called foolishness by venturing outside for unnecessary things. Going to public places like shopping mall, gyms, cinema halls, places of worship can all be avoided. Do your workouts at home. You need not go to gym. You can do your walking within your home instead of going outside on the road. They are thousands of videos on YouTube. There are also gym instructors who give training online You can just follow them. Don't meet your friends and relatives in person. You can talk to them via voice or video calls. No partying / pubs etc.If you want to buy anything, try to buy online instead of going to the shop. Just ask the delivery person to leave it in the verandah. You can leave it in the sun for 4 to 5 hours and then keep them inside. You must sanitize the packets before opening. Wash your hands well after you have opened the package. Grocery, medicines everything is available online.We do not know whether a vaccine will come or not and if it comes what side effects it will have. The virus affects people in varied levels of severity. For some it just doesn't affect at all, while for others it could be very severe.
