The word lawyer refers to someone who is licensed to practice law. In the US at least, the word attorney is most commonly understood to be a synonym of lawyer. For example, if someone asks me what I do for a living, it's a coin flip as to whether I'd respond with “lawyer” or “attorney,” and both answers would have the same meaning.However, the word attorney formally means representative, and so can have other meanings. Lawyers, for example, are officially “attorneys and counselors at law,” meaning that they may represent and advise people in legal matters. But someone may be “attorney in fact” or have “power of attorney” in certain matters without going to law school and passing the bar, simply because they've been asked to represent someone's interests in a certain matter, such as handling finances or medical decisions.

When I was 17, I was arrested, off-campus, for possession of marijuana. They didn’t have to call the dog on me. I said I had $5 worth of weed (a nickel) and some cigarettes in the center console of my Firebird.I also had, in my wallet, my NORML card, which I used, sitting in the front seat of the cop’s car as he drove me to the police station. He cursed at me. He berated me. He spoke as poorly as he could at me, and I just responded, over and over, “I would like to speak to an attorney and respectfully decline to answer any of your questions or to converse with you.”That just prompted more rage from him. When I got to the PD, the school’s liaison officer came by my cell and asked me, “Would you like to participate in intelligence?”I told him, “No. I would like to speak to my attorney.”At that point, the adults in the room left me alone and took me to the real jail for booking and bonding out. Back then, there were standard bonds.I will never forget how much I was cursed at; made to feel like I was dogshit. All because of $5 worth of low-quality weed. And no matter how many times I declined to speak (aka: I would like to speak to an attorney), they kept on; up to, and including, asking me if I wanted to participate in incriminating other people.Two or so years later, the officer who arrested me beat up a prisoner he had handcuffed from behind around a metal chair, and he ended up getting federal felony charges, which sent him to the penitentiary Uncle Sam administers. — He is no longer a police officer, and he is a felon.I got one year of just-above-parking-ticket misdemeanor probation, which I completed while I was a freshman at university.I never muttered an ill word toward the guy. Can’t say the same for him. I hate it for the in-custody assault victim. — I guess the police “officer” got what was coming to him, eventually.

I have a story for you.I responded to a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. They had a fight and the wife stabbed her husband with a fork and he beat her, causing visible markings. It could not be determined who started the fight so they were both good to go.As the husband was being loaded onto the ambulance, he began shouting at her “I’m telling them what you did!” repeatedly. She began to shout back to shut the eff up.After the husband was released from the hospital, I transported him to the precinct for processing. Thinking to myself, “I need to know what he knows”, I bought him a nice breakfast.After about an hour, he started telling me a story over 20 years old. Apparently, some local kid had raped their daughter and they devised a plan to take care of him. They convinced him they wanted to hire him to move some furniture. While in the back of the U-Haul truck they’d rented, the husband was supposed to beat him for what he’d done. The wife had other intentions though and hit him with a 2x4 until he died. They then rolled him up in a U-Haul blanket, drove his body to the city, and threw him down the elevator shaft of an abandoned building.This became a missing person case that was re-investigated every few years. I had all the reports faxed to me (different theories, stories, and drawings showing the missing person aged).We drove my prisoner to the city to identify the location of where they’d dumped the body. The old building was long gone and a new one stood in its place.After contacting the other agency, I found out that a body was recovered at that location but could not be identified and had been buried in an unmarked grave. The description was definitely my missing person.So, a simple domestic incident solved a 22-year-old “missing person/murder case”…all with a $2.00 breakfast.EDIT: I have received multiple questions on the outcome of the case so I thought I would include more information.The missing person case was closed, but the murder was not. I personally think the district attorney and the assigned homicide detective dropped the ball on this and were too lazy to work the case.The problems as they were explained to me was the body was buried in an unmarked grave so they could not get any forensics from the body. The crime scene was a U-Haul truck that is long gone, and the building was torn down within a year of the murder. To further complicate things, they started to point the finger at each other making it a “he said/she said” argument. I do believe if I was allowed to continue the interrogation I would have been able to get a full confession with the rapport I had built with the subject. The homicide detective let it become more adversarial than it needed to be.They should have at least received a charge for disposal of a human body and assault as they both admitted that much. It should have also been left to a jury of their peers instead of one lazy district attorney and homicide detective.The family of the young man deserved at least that. I also questioned whether he actually had raped the girl as she never said it was him, and the family was just going on a hunch.Thanks for the interest.
