Finally, once the pandemic was over, Barak Obama created the Pandemic response Team to try and anticipate future pandemics, which has been largely incapacitated (although not completely dissolved) by the current administration.Barak Obama showed concern, attention, preparedness, and honesty during the swine flu pandemic in 2009 and, after his experience with that pandemic, worked to make the US more ready for future pandemic. Question: Why aren't people buying up a bunch of soap instead of toilet paper in response to Coronavirus?Some thoughts:Because people aren’t thinking clearly - In the few stores that I have been to in last few days, all have plenty of antibacterial dish soap and regular body wash, both of which are (wait for it…) SOAP. For some reason unless it’s packaged and/or labeled in a certain manner, people avoid it, even when it’s what they are seeking.Because people aren’t thinking clearly #2 - Most people ignore disaster and emergency preparedness until a disaster or an emergency. Most people don’t know what they need or what they need to do, and many act reflexively, hoping that they are doing the safest thing for themselves and their loved ones.Because they are watching other people buy it and that’s influencing them - We are social animals, and while most of us won’t admit it many of our actions are inspired by others, in truth they really are. When people see others getting more than normal amounts of something, they often attempt to do the same, regardless of whether or not they actually need it.Because it makes people feel better - Seriously. People cannot control COVID-19, they can’t control the flow of vital information, and they can’t make their respective governments work harder or more efficiently than they are. They CAN, however, buy and/or stockpile goods and that gives many the sense of accomplishment that we all need. People might be panicking even more if they could NOT get anything, including toilet paper, meaning that the current panic buying is actually cathartic for many.Because it’s REALLY unpleasant to run out of toilet paper - Even during “normal times” running out of toilet paper is a minor emergency, especially in the West. People are comforted by the fact that the more toilet paper that they have on hand, the less likely that they are going to need to venture out, wait in long lines, and risk the possibility that they contract the illness.If people kept a few extra supplies at home and learned disaster preparedness and emergency management basics (No, you don’t need to become a “prepper” if you don’t want to) then things like what is happening, wouldn’t happen.
