Why do people live in the northeastern part of the USA despite its extremely cold weather, even if they can afford to move anywhere else in the USA?

People to the west of the Mississippi tend to refer to Ohio as part of the "East Coast" or "Northeast", but geographically we're the Midwest. Why Midwest? Because back when it was named the Midwest, we really were midway to the western states (soon after the Louisiana Purchase, but before the US crossed into what is Texas and the lands west of the Rockies).Anyway, northern Ohio's weather is nearly identical to New York or Connecticut: warm humid summers, snowy winters; rain; frequent weather shifts. It's annoying at times. But the truth is, Cleveland weather isn't all that bad. When I say, "Not that bad. . ." people from Hawaii or Southern California smirk -- well, yeah, they have the world's greatest weather, so their paradigm is a bit different.Northern Ohio's summers lovely. Absolutely, positively, lovely. The spring and autumn are chilly, but very tolerable -- they're seasons of change and there's something magical about experiencing these shifting periods of the seasons. But then there's winter. I hate the cold. I hate the winter. But "the bad part of winter" in Ohio lasts from January 1st - March 15th. That's 2 1/2 months. That's not intolerable. It's not horrible. It's just cold and snowy. When I lived in Phoenix, there were 90 days of intolerable, completely "hunker down with the AC blasting" days where I remember racing from my home to the car. I hated it. But it was worth the trade off for the remaining 9 months of great weather. But, when I flip it around, that's kind of how Ohio is. It's miserable for about 2 1/2 months, but the rest of the time It's pretty good to fantastic. So why put up with that? Why bother?Well, for starters, where I live, I make roughly twice the GDP-PC of the US, but what I get for that money goes INCREDIBLY far.Insurance is cheap (Jersey, New York & Connecticut cannot say that), I pay $85 per month for "full coverage" auto insurance on two brand new cars (just bought within the past six months) with 500k CSL liability; no deductible for glass; 250 for comp; 500 for total theft and collision. See if Southern California or Long Island can beat that price. My renter's insurance is $55 PER YEAR and it covers everything I own, and liability.Utilities are disgustingly cheap. My gas bill is $25 a month; my electric bill is (okay, it's summer) $85 a month (lower, about $40 in winter).Taxes (sales and income) in Ohio are fairly low.Land and rent is cheap (I pay $745 a month for a 1,150 square foot, 2 bedroom, 2 full bath, 2 walk-in-closet, condo-style apartment that is less than 5 years old). I can buy a brand new condo in a nice suburb for $125,000 right now.I am within proximity of a large city (yes, Cleveland is great, with tons of restaurants and museums and activities). There's never a threat of a drought -- we have the Ohio River watershed, which includes the Great Lakes & the river itself. There is a TON of natural beauty, parks, rivers, lakes and such. Why else? Well, like the same reason that people live in the middle of a BFE desert town in Arizona or in the freezing gold village in northern Canada: our lives are here. Our families are here. Even if this weren't a good place to live, people like being near their family and community.

What happens if I switch from full coverage insurance to liability on a older car that I'm still paying for? I live in Texas if that matters.

Since you still owe on the auto loan, the lienholder requires that you carry collision and comprehensive coverage. If you are prepared to bear the financial risk of repairing or replacing the car once you have a clear title you can drop the physical damage coverage.Dropping the physical damage coverage will reduce your premium.FYI, there is no such thing as “full coverage”. It does not exist!
