PDF Editor FAQ
What motivates people to adopt a child?
I work at Binti, which helps prospective adoptive parents quickly and securely fill out their adoption home study paperwork online. Of the 1000+ parents we've talked to, we've seen people adopt for several reasons:Biologically unable to have children: Many adopt because they are biologically unable to have children and would like to build their family through adoption.Adopting relatives: We've helped many families adopt relatives whose parent(s) have passed away.Ties to adoption: Others adopt because they have some ties to the adoption community (either they were adopted themselves or had friends or family who were adopted) and also see the need for children to find loving homes.Charitable/religious reasonsAdopting a friend or loose acquaintance's child: We've also helped several prospective adoptive parents adopt children of friends or acquaintances in their community. For example, a pregnant teenager will approach a couple in her church community to adopt her child.Whatever your reason for adopting, we believe that adoption is a wonderful to build your family. As Oprah, would say "Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother."
Why is adoption such a thorough process, but everyone is allowed to make a baby?
Short answer: Because children are not a disposable asset, they’re not toys that once broken you can just throw them away and go back to Children R Us and buy a new one. They do not appear in a pack of twelve at Costco either.Long answer (go brew yourself some tea or coffee, it is going to be long):As per your question, everyone may be allowed to make a baby, but not everyone can or should for that matter. We grow up assuming that we all can reproduce until you find out that the stork got drunk and been hit by a plane on its way to your house to deliver your baby. But you’re a young couple, just got married or been together for a long time and you and your tenderloin half feel that you want to share your wisdom. Knowing that one or both of you can’t have children, your natural clock is ticking and you still want to become parents, so you are looking for alternatives.Adopting a child is a journey that is supposed (usually) to last a lifetime. My parents went through that process, let’s take a look, shall we? And I’ll provide a few commentaries of my own. I am the adoptee, not the “adopter”, but I have all the papers, all the receipts, all the back and forth communication between my parents, agent, Canadian immigration, lawyers and so on and so forth. I know practically all that my parents had to go through to finally get this guy who’s typing this today (and my sister).Type of adoption, which one is right for you?The advantage you have as adoptive parents, you get to choose your children. But you still need to know that there are few types of adoption you need to go through before you make your final choice. No matter which choice you make it doesn’t automatically means that you’ll be accepted. Hence that long and thorough process.*Just to be clear, I am Canadian, not American, while our adoption processes are very similar, I am not speaking in terms of states but in terms of provinces as per Canadian Adoption regulations and Immigration.Do you want a child from your own country or international?Domestic - private domestic adoptions can cost anywhere between $30,000 to $50,000 dollars.International - Depending upon the country from which you adopt, international adoption can be very costly, ranging anywhere between $32,000 to $66,000 dollars, depending on the child’s country of origin. Travel costs to the country you are adopting from need to be included in the total, as well as repeated visits, and extended stays. In addition to out of pocket costs, international adoption will usually require more travel costs and time away from home/work.Must the child be a baby or an older child?Domestic - If you are looking to adopt a newborn or young infant, you are looking at a domestic adoption. It’s that simple.International - International adoptions are of non-infants. Children adopted from overseas must be cleared for adoption. They must meet local guidelines and be offered to a local family before being eligible for an international placement - in the late 70’s, in Haiti and many other Caribbean islands and countries this rule was not always enforced. As a result, there is always a period of several months prior to the referral for adoption. In addition, all adoptions take time to process. By the time the child would come to Canada 6-12 months would have elapsed. Except for a few programs where children under the age of 8 months are referred for placement, the majority of children are at least 1 year of age at the time of referral and almost 2 years old when they immigrate to Canada. - I arrived in Canada in my new family on December 19, 1980 at 4 1/2 years old, my sister arrived in February 1981, she was 2 years old. And yes, I remember. Never was in a plane and never seen a snowflake in my young life.Private or public (foster care)? If considering private or public adoption, this means you will be able to adopt locally or from another province or territories. In such case, children are older and have been placed into foster care due to child abuse or neglect. They may have been in several foster care placements prior to being "freed" for adoption. If you agree to take a child into your home, check to see if the child has been freed for adoption or if it is a foster care placement with a family reunification or adoption goal. If the child is not freed for adoption, it is a risky placement—meaning the child can be removed from your home and placed with a family member or even another foster care or adoptive family. Children freed for adoption in the foster care system are typically 4 years and older.Open, semi-open or closed? In an open adoption, the Adoptive Parents and Birth Parents share contact during the pregnancy and after birth. There is not one level of openness that works for all adoptions so this can mean sharing photos, phone calls, texts and sometimes even visits. Open adoption may be the healthiest choice for those involved but the level of openness should always focus on meeting the needs of the child, not the Adoptive Parents or the Birth Parents. - * Note that it is very very very rare that you will enter in an open adoption should you decide to adopt internationally, most international adoptions are closed. In a semi-open adoption, Birth Parents and Adoptive Parents will share non-identifying information and the communication between Birth Parents and Adoptive Parents will typically be handled by their adoption agency/professional.In a closed adoption, no information or contact is shared between the Adoptive Parents and Birth Parents. In the past, almost all adoptions in Canada and the US were closed, but today, most adoptions will have some level of openness.Already now you can understand that adopting children isn’t as simple as just having a “sex trophy” of your own. And now let us talk about the COST. You certainly didn’t believe that being a good Samaritan was enough? There is a cost and there’s not much of a big difference in cost if you decide to adopt locally versus internationally. But I gave you that hint already, so what’s involved?I’ll start by saying that not all adoption processes are the same and each one has its own expenses. In domestic adoption, expenses may include legal representation for the adoptive and birth parent(s), medical costs, counseling, rent, phone and travel for the birth parent(s), and travel, court, Home Study and networking/advertising costs for the adoptive parent(s). - if you wonder what is home study, this is an assessment of the prospective Adoptive Family and this narrative report is used at various points in the adoption process. In short, they will put on the surgical gloves and proceed to a deep search into your background, your physical and mental health, home and neighborhood, parenting style (if you already have children), references, employment, financial as well about your readiness and reasoning for adopting. You will need to produce a lot of legal documents such as marriage licenses, birth certificates, and divorce decrees and of course, you’ll need to go through a criminal background check. In other terms, bend over my dear, spread these cheeks and sing me a showtune while I go through your bowels. In an international adoption, there are agency or attorney fees plus the applications to Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Services. In the country from which the child will immigrate, there are legal and agency costs, court, medical and document, and translation costs, donations to the child welfare center (the orphanage) and local travel.Yes, we all can agree that having a child the natural way is much easier, but as I mentioned earlier it’s not always possible. In a traditional “having a child business”, it will most likely cost you a nice dinner, a bottle of wine or a broken condom, but when you choose to adopt, you got to roll up the dough. Way before you have that child running in your house and breaking everything you possess in the process, you will have to spend a lot of time and money. And well, there’s also the part whereas natural parents, you conceive your child in the privacy of your room or kitchen or car - I don’t know your fantasy. In an adoption scenario, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.Because of all the processes involved in adopting a child, you need several people to assist you. This is why you need to choose an Adoption Professional. You don’t actually need to, but let say it will smooth the process if you get someone who already knows what to do.While researching various adoption professionals, it is very important for you to understand that not all entities provide the same services in the same manner. Some handle the entire adoption process, helping you through every step, while others may only handle certain parts of it. It is crucial that you ask each adoption professional you are vetting to give you an accurate layout of ALL the costs you will incur while working with them, whether those costs are a part of their services or not. In other words, just because Adoption Professional #1's fees are quoted at $20,000 and Adoption Professional #2's fees are quoted at $30,000, does not necessarily mean Adoption Professional #1 would be the least expensive option in the end, as there may be other costs not covered by #1's services. Yes, you are shopping, but this is not a discount store. At the end of the day, you are still going to pay thousands and thousands of dollars.Be sure to understand the differences between an adoption agency, law center, and facilitator.Adoption AgenciesAn adoption agency is a licensed business that places children in adoptive homes. They are staffed by trained professionals and are regulated by the province. Adoption agencies often provide an extensive range of services pre and post placement including preparing adoption home studies, matching adoptive families with expectant mothers, and providing counseling and support for birth mothers. Many agencies also provide counseling for adoptees and adoptive parents. Be sure to ask the adoption agency you choose for an outlined list of services they provide.Adoption AttorneysAdoption attorneys are experts in adoption law. They represent private and independent adoption cases. An adoption attorney files the adoption paperwork, oversees the adoption case, and finalizes the child placement process. Adoption attorneys handle the legal process but do not generally locate birth parents for clients. Some may assist by placing ads online, in newspapers, and within social groups for their clients that are hoping to adopt.Adoption FacilitatorsAdoptive parents with high and flexible budgets often desire the swiftest form of adoption to expand their family by hiring an adoption facilitator. Adoption facilitators connect hopeful adoptive parents with expectant mothers considering adoption and serve as an intermediary between both parties. Depending on the state, you will discover that many adoption facilitators are not licensed—and some states have laws against the use of adoption facilitators. Facilitators offer minimal to no support other than matching an expectant mother and an adoptive family. Once an expectant mother selects a family, the adoption facilitator refers them to a licensed adoption professional to finish the adoption process.Adoption ConsultantsAdoption Consultants educate clients and assist them through the adoption process. They generally work with a number of agencies and attorneys and refer clients to them. They also give advice and feedback on creating adoption profiles. Adoption Consultants act as unbiased partners, and with their experience in the field can review adoption opportunities and discuss possible risks with clients. They also offer emotional support as well as answer questions and guide clients through the uncertainty of the process.During this step of the process, you should be doing your research, know what you want, need and expect out of your adoption journey, ask questions and keep an eye out for any warning signs and risks during the vetting process. Adoption is a business and as in all business, you have crooks that are just in for the cash. We all know the story of that crazy heartless bitch who never paid for her crimes because she died of a cancer before she could be convicted. If you don’t know the disgusting story of Georgia Tann, please follow the link below:In conclusion, adopting is very thorough because this a human life we’re talking about, wanting to adopt is quite honorable, but this is not a flee market. But some people and some government do see it as a lucrative business. In 1977, my parents had adopted a young Haitian boy, they went through all the processes and were granted the child. They’ve waited 2 years and more to finally be told that the boy was ready for the grand voyage. Happy of this news, my dad decided to go pick up the child himself, while my mom was preparing the house for his arrival. All went well, until the very day my dad had his boy in his arms ready to take its flight back to Canada with his new son when suddenly, someone shown up at the airport. It was the boy’s mother. Imagine my dad’s surprise when he saw that lady running all happy to meet her child protector and the confusion of my dad who believed he was adopting an orphan. My dad was told that the boy he was adopting was an orphan, the mother was told that her children were going for a long trip to be educated and will be returned to her or that she would be able to keep contact with him. Obviously, my dad wouldn’t have minded this open adoption, but this wasn’t what he was told so for him and my mom this boy was to become their legitimate adoptive son. This delayed the trip back to Canada since now, it was out of the question to leave with someone’s child who has been lied to. My dad went to the embassy of Canada in Haiti and place a complaint, which immediately closed all adoptions in Haiti until the Government of Canada and the US had conducted an investigation on Haiti’s adoption processes. You guess that the Duvalier Administration was not too happy about it, and my dad had to be placed under the protection of the Canadian embassy. Every move he did was with two or three Canadian soldiers by his sides and the American embassy was thoroughly watching every move of the Tonton Macout (private national police of that idiotic pompous asshole Baby Doc) as well. The adoption agency in Canada had made pressure on the Haitian government to provide my dad with a REAL and verified orphan. Thus my dad visited the orphanage where I was, and the sister in charge - Sister Veronique brought me in. I was covered with shit and mud, had a protuberant malnourished belly, but was the most presentable apparently. My dad agreed and sign up for my adoption, but then you think the surprise was over? Of course not, after he signed for me, I didn’t really know who he was and what he was to become, but you know children, we always want to show our prize possession, and that's when he realized that I had a sister. The orphanage confirmed it was my sister, and it didn’t take much of a time for my dad to decided that she was coming too. And you think that the money he spent for the previous boy would count? No, he had to go through it again, with all the financial shit. My parent's adoption adventure cost well over 70000 dollars, remember that’s a shit load of money in the late ’70sMy dad returned to Canada safely, not without some attempts of the Tonton Macout to kidnap him, but they failed miserably. My sister and I were placed under the protection of the Canadian embassy if anything were to happen to us the Government of Haiti would be in serious serious serious international issues not only with Canada but with every other nation that supported them financially. On December 15, 1980, my mom received a call from the adoption agency that I was ready for the grand voyage. I left Haiti on December 19, 1980, and arrived at Mirabel International Airport where my dad was waiting for me. I was their Christmas gift. My sister followed 2 months later. This was the first time I was on a plane, the first time in a winter country first time in a place with so many white people. In the plane, do you know which music was playing as we flew over the US? Bob Marley - By the rivers of Babylon (Melodians). As this was the music that brought me to my new life, I asked in my wills that this also be the same that will lead me to my grave.Yes, it is a lengthy process, but there’s one thing I can say that no birth child can ever say I WAS CHOSEN!And I never set foot back in Haiti since I left.
Why do Vietnamese students spend so much time studying?
May I ask if you are referring to Vietnamese in Vietnam? Or, are you referring to Vietnamese living abroad - America, EU, Australia, etc.?In either cases, you can relate if you look at the recent history of Vietnam…The Vietnamese written language was invented by a visiting Jesuit priest who was surprised to see that only the elites from China could read and write. So, Father Rhodes applied French alphabet characters with accents to spell out the sounds of Vietnamese spoken words. And he taught others and it caught on. Vietnamese is the only language in the region today that is not calligraphy based. Education was limited to the nobles. And Father Rhodes helped to break that barrier for all who wanted to learn.French colonialism was good and bad for Vietnam. For many decades, Saigon was called the “Pearl of the Orient.” Prosperity and commercial growth. But, opportunity was limited. And to be able to aspire to be in the next class in society, one had to rely on education or entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship required capital. And a French education required wealth to break into the circle that was exclusive. There was no YouTube and resources to learn except schools and books - which is also very hard to gain access to.Then the multiple wars. The war to end colonialism. And the war to reunite the 2 divided countries - North and South Vietnam. War destroys everything. The only thing that can endure a war is one’s knowledge and skills - if one survives. After the war ended, all the wealth and education amassed during the years of alliance with the French and the Americans became worthless over night. Money, property, bank accounts, and land were all confiscated. Books were burned and labeled propaganda. So, if you had education, and it was the “wrong education”, you were sent to re-education camps. No food to be had. Rice and fishery exports were sent to repay war debts. The economy is ruined. Embargoes and trade with most outside nations is not possible. As a result, many people risked their lives to flee in search of a better life. (If caught trying to escape, prison or worse.)If they survived the dangerous escape at sea, they resettled in their adopted homes. These people are labeled in history as “boat people.” Professionals like teachers who spoke/ read English or French had better chances abroad. Accountants, engineers, and entrepreneurs who only spoke Vietnamese had to start over as factory workers and other manual laborer jobs to survive.Today, the children of these boat people are “studying all the time” because their parents passed on to them the valuable life lessons of having everything taken or disappear almost overnight. The only thing that survives is education, high-demand skills, and skills for competing in a competitive jobs market. Marketable skills need certifications, diplomas, degrees, and work experience. They study to pave a path to the end goal of financial and intellectual success. Especially, when education is free and accessible to everyone.Today, over half of the Vietnamese population in Vietnam are born after 1975. They do not remember the war and do not relate to it. They want to create a better tomorrow. They want to learn English - and now they are allowed to since in mid 1990’s. There is little to no censorship of Internet information in Vietnam. The young Vietnamese population is industrious. They use all tools and books (online) available to them. They have learned lessons from centuries past that motivate them to study and learn. And in some cases, copy and imitate success they see elsewhere. Vietnam is a top destination for expats working abroad. Many big global brands manufacture their products in Vietnam - for decades now. Shoes, electronics, textiles, and now software and web design too. English is widely spoken.P.s. I am a Vietnamese boat person refugee. I received kindness from strangers who pulled me from a broken boat in the South China Sea and was offered asylum as a refugee in Thailand. A Canadian church congregation sponsored my family out of the refugee camp to give us a chance at a new life in Canada. I am forever grateful for the kindness of strangers.
