Jerry from Tom & Jerry.When I was a kid, I used to love Jerry the mouse, and always considered Tom to be the villain.Then I rewatched a few episodes as an adult, and my whole perspective changed. Suddenly, Jerry looked like the antagonist and I couldn’t stand him. I felt sorry for Tom.Tom is just trying to do his job as a domestic cat and rightfully lives in the house. Jerry is an intruder, who tortures and provokes Tom even when he has no reason to. For example, by putting Tom’s tail in the fire when he is sleeping. Jerry has also ruined any chance Tom ever had to have a romance with another cat.Tom, on the other hand, mostly acts in retaliation, and in a far less sadistic manner than Jerry. He is often sleeping or relaxing when Jerry disturbs him. At other times, he’s trying to protect his owner’s property from being damaged by Jerry. Sure, he does try to kill and eat Jerry, but that’s literally his job. And while you could argue that Jerry is just trying to survive, there are too many instances where he’s overly cruel and sadistic even when Tom is not threatening him.Finally at the end of each episode, Tom usually suffers a humiliating defeat by Jerry. I remember this made me feel happy as a kid, but how the tables have turned! I see Tom as the victim now and I can no longer stand Jerry.I feel the same way about Squidward and Spongebob. I used to dislike Squidward, but now I can totally relate to him. And it’s Spongebob who I can’t stand. I guess I grew up to be Squidward.

The mischievous Tom.As a kid, I was a staunch Jerry supporter.Tom - who constantly persecuted Jerry, who never let Jerry have his food, and even made several failed attempts to gobble Jerry alive - of course Tom had to be the villain. I never thought twice about it.But now…. now in the light of day I realise….It was Jerry all along. He was the root cause of all “Tomestic” violence.Who doused himself in invisible ink and set fire to Tom? Jerry did.Who ruined every chance of Tom having a respectable date with a lady cat? Jerry did.Who set the ferocious bulldog loose on Tom? Jerry did.Who pretended to be a dangerous fugitive lab rat just to mess with Tom? JERRY!What was poor Tom to do but retaliate?Tom wasn't perfect. Yes, I had the displeasure of terminating an employee early in my first career management experience.I was 29 years old and promoted to manager of a small technical department with engineers and technicians (perhaps 10 total).“Jerry” was a technician, very inquisitive, and often working outside the box - I liked him and felt he did a good job for the company.But his “outside the box” activities included criticizing corporate policies, from pay scales to benefits and many others, often writing letters to the CEO.One day, I was called to the VP,Technology office (my boss) and was told flat out to “get rid” of Jerry. Apparently Jerry’s complaints were getting a lot of attention and management decided to end this one way dialogue; so I was told to terminate him.I consulted with HR who told me that as his manager, it was my responsibility to do this job that I did not look forward to…As the days passed, I was getting more pressure from above, so like a good newly appointed manager, I called Jerry into my office and terminated him, telling him exactly what I was told to do, no fake made up excuses. I decided to let the chips fall where they may, if Jerry decided to take some legal action.Jerry left, quite depressed and never worked again. Within a year, this 26 year old man had died due to OD on alcohol. I was a devastated and have held this story inside until today, nearly 40 years later.I really liked Jerry and didn’t feel this was handled correctly by any of us, and had I been stronger to help him, things might have turned out different.Jerry was a loner, sort of geeky (I liked that), not many friends or family and likely no one remembers him.I am writing this as a tribute to Jerry and his cocky, inquisitive attitude.
