How did Roman Saini make notes from the newspaper?

I was just going through the stuff in my Google Drive to delete some files (reaching the 15 GB limit of google).Encountered a lot of memories from last 10 years, both sweet and sour. But I also stumbled upon e-notes which I prepared during my preparation. This is an example of how I wrote key words and phrases from The Hindu edition, dated 22nd March, 2013. Hope it helps. Also, if anyone wants my notes, I can email it to them. I don't think it will be of any help, because all of them are completely outdated. But if still anyone wants them (mostly keynote, evernote, doc, onenote and notes files), just write your email address in the comments section below.March 22, 2013Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt.Lathmar holi, phag mahotsava. How do I make history notes for UPSC Pre and Mains?

I think there are 5 effective ways to make history hand written notes:1) SEGREGATESegregate the various topics from history. For ex- British Education policy/Press/Labour reforms/ and so on. It will help in memorizing the data very efficiently. This strategy helped me a lot.I have attached the image of my British Education policy notes. See, I have concise the 8-10 page of data into just one page.2) MNEMONICSTry to learn smartly because it will help you to mug up more data and thus will boost your confidence. You will find other students struggling with huge information of history like dates/ years/ Dandi march/ Mughal policy etc. Use mnemonics to remember these facts. For Ex. In the image, I made a mnemonic for 1857 revolt, Jainism, economic critique (upsc prelims 2015)3) WATCH MOVIEFor beginners, Watching related movie (Once only) will create a picture in your mind which will supplement you in making and studying your notes. They will also motivate you in your preparation. There are 5 movies, where name of real characters were used, which will surely help you in history preparation. Enjoying your preparation is very essential. These movies will help you in this also. Listen carefully to each word in these movies.> Chittagong> Gandhi (1982)> Rang de Basanti> The legend of Bhagat Singh (Ajay Devgan)> Bose the forgotten hero4) NOTES ACCORDING TO LINEAGEIt is important for history that you make your notes according to the timeline (Lineage). It is important because upsc has asked questions regarding time line of the events (See below image). Such notes will also help you in understanding the complete sequence of the events. In the image given below, I have made a sequence of press reform under British, that only on 1 page. You can paste this on your wall (looking at it daily) and you will see the result.5) CHARTSPreparing a topic through Charts will help you in eliminating the options in actual exam. Make chart when there are 2-3 similar and confusing topics. Through charts you can compare and remember the facts about all the 2-3 topics. For Ex. in 2017, a tough question was asked in prelims about ryotwari settlement (see image below), but I was able to answer it correctly because I have prepared it through the chart of settlement (see image below).I hope you will follow this methods while making your notes.Thank You!

How much energy would be saved if Google used a black screen instead of white?

This concept has actually been tried before:Blackle - Energy Saving SearchDarkoogle SearchAs to how effective it is, the EcoIron blog explains it very comprehensively here in a 2007 post: The Full Story on Black Google, Blackle, etc, from which I summarize the remainder of my answer.First, the science: this is a simplification, but older CRT (cathode ray tube) screens essentially work by firing electrons at patterns of charged dots on the screen, causing those dots to light up and display images. Each cluster of 3 dots (red, blue, and green) is one pixel, and a white pixel would require all 3 dots to be lit up, making it the most energy-intensive. Whereas a black pixel requires, well, no dots.On the other hand, more modern LCD (liquid crystal) displays have a backlight that is constantly on, making the power consumption fairly constant regardless of the color/lighting of whatever movie you're watching on Netflix right now.As to the actual numbers: I'm as up for a Bain/McKinsey-style "how many pizza-delivering window washers are hired in Oklahoma every year" question as anyone else, so in order to find out the answer, we'd need to know:How much time people spend on Google, which is probably a separate question in itself. Let's assume "Google" refers to the actual search page at google dot com, and not to Gmail, Youtube, or any of its other properties. In that case, we could get a ballpark figure by multiplying the number of Google searches per year on a desktop computer* by the average amount of time it takes for a user to perform 1 google search. The proportion of people who use CRT monitors, compared to LCD screens. The watt differential between a black and white screen, per hour*EDIT 8/16/15: The text originally stated "number of Google searches per year" as is. However, as Hein Oomen rightfully pointed out in the comments, I forgot that Google also works with those newfangled smartphone and tablet thingies, which don't have CRT screens. I've updated Section 1a below accordingly.1a. As of this writing, Google processes around 40,000 searches per second worldwide, which comes to about 3.5 billion searches per day. Appropriately enough, I found this info via a Google search for "number of google searches per day": Google Search StatisticsNow, as mentioned previously, a significant chunk of those searches actually aren't done on a desktop computer, and the mobile devices those searches take place on don't have CRT screens, so our 3.5 billion figure doesn't yet take into account that percentage. Well, that's where my mediocre Google-fu comes in.For starters: Google's official AdWords blog (May 5, 2015) states that "more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan." This is helpful, inasmuch as it tells us that people do a lot of searches on their phones. Unfortunately it doesn't give an exact figure. This post, however, seems to be slightly more helpful: Report: Mobile Search Queries 29 Percent Of Total But Growth Modest (March 26, 2015, Searchengineland blog). The 29% figure comes from the comScore infographic for 2014; I assume the figure has only grown higher in 2015. (The post did note a 5 percentage point year-to-year growth in mobile searches.) I'll hedge my bets and say the current figure is around 1/3 of all mobile searches (if anyone has more accurate data from comScore or some other analytics firm, I'm all ears).Anyway, multiplying the remaining 2/3 by 3.5 billion searches gives 2.33... billion non-mobile searches.1b. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember when Google searches were still measured in whole seconds (dialup is the best, amirite?)Thankfully, this is no longer the case- Google searches are now measured in tiny fractions of seconds, so we can assume the majority of time spent on Google comes from typing in the query and physically looking at the search results before clicking on them.A fascinating side question would be: what is the average number of pages a Google user has to look through before finding their query. This is something I'm sure people at Mountain View smarter than me are paid large amounts of money to figure out on a daily basis. For the purposes of this answer, though, let's assume that Google is a near-omniscient round sphere that always delivers the desired result on the first page.Let's also assume that each search results in exactly one clickthrough. Let's also assume that I am representative of the average google user, and it takes me the same amount of time to read through half of a page of google results as everyone else.Yes, I timed myself doing this. I typed in "what is the average time it takes to perform a google search". I read the descriptions of the first five results I got. The first result was the aforementioned Google Search Statistics page (with no data on the average length of a Google query, which is a shame, because then we could multiply that by the average 40 WPM typing speed, but oh well...) The next result was an awesome Google blog post from 2009 talking about how much energy Google's new data centers would save (but not how much energy the average Google user uses). The remaining results were all about how awesome SEO is and why I should do it more often. Maybe I should get better at google-fu before I attempt to answer a question about google searches. Oh well.Anyway, my completely representative Google search took me around 8 seconds. (As a side note, the EcoIron blog says 10. I'm still going with eight, though.)2. This one gave me a headache, because although CRT monitors are pretty much out of production now, I'm not sure how many people still own one, either due to personal preference or (more likely) lack of funds. The EcoIron blog post I mentioned above mentions a report from a "industry reporting service" called DisplaySearch that lists the worldwide figure at 25.3% worldwide. However, in addition to me being unable to find this figure anywhere else*, this report was from 2006- around a decade ago. It's almost certain that the number of CRT's has decreased since then, since CRT monitors are pretty much out of production, but how many is up for debate. I'll say 15% is my best guess, although I am eager for any statistics that can confirm/disprove this.*Did I mention I am bad at google-fu yet?3. According to this page (Page on doe.gov) - the difference between white (74W) and black (59W) is 15 watts. Unfortunately, this link also comes from the same EcoIron blog post, and is additionally out of date (I had to use the Wayback Machine on it), so I have reservations about its accuracy. I'm also skeptical that it applies equally across all monitors and doesn't take into account different size screens- but 15 watts it is.So, in conclusion, we have:(2.33 billion non-mobile searches per day) * (8 seconds per search) = 18.66 billion collective seconds of computers being on Google per day, or 5,185,185.19 hours, multiplied by (15 watt-hours)*(0.15 proportion of CRT monitors) = 11.667 million watt-hours per day (11,666.7 kWh).*Let's be honest, though: I don't think McKinsey (or Google) is going to hire me any time soon.----*Edited to correct errors in units, courtesy of Ronny Cook and Mark Camp in the comments. Needless to say, I haven't looked at this page in a while. To be honest, it might still be wrong- I kind of sucked at physics in high school.
