What should PBSI do to revive Indonesia's badminton domination?

'Badminton world domination' is a situation where Indonesia possesses a big collection of highly motivated outstanding male & female players (exceptionally talented, well trained, focused, physically fit, mentally strong, full of match experiences, etc.) and keeps winning titles after titles consistently generation after generation...I have analyzed the different badminton systems in China, Korea, Japan, India, Malaysia, Denmark, France, England, etc. Each one of them have different strategic approaches due to their different situations. We need 3 things to become realities:1. A badminton professional career is viewed by most people as a viable way to achieve 'a better tomorrow' complete with a reasonable safety-net. First crucial question we all need to ask: how can people be highly motivated? Second crucial question: many parents are risk-averse when it comes to taking risks for the children's future, how do we alleviate those fears?the incentives (financial, fame, glory etc.) has to be extremely attractive for big winners of this 'career choice'... otherwise, ordinary parents will just push their children to focus on academic pursuits (leading them to other career choices)People (athletes, their parents, society in general) also have to believe that the system and management of the sport is fair and conducive for obtaining 'a better tomorrow'... PSSI is a notorious example of what should not happen.A child (and his/her family) has to endure a lot of sacrifice to pursue a badminton career, yet there is a pretty big chance he/she won't become a top champion. In the past, there are a myriad of cases where the former aspiring athletes just experience some bleak life-after-badminton. This risk should be minimized by providing alternative life-routes for the majority who cannot become top championsSafety-net solution: scholarships in universities for those who are members of the university team. After 4 years, the student-athlete can graduate with an Undergraduate degree. During those 4 years, the parents who already supported their kids' badminton training will economically benefit by not spending much University expenses. Most parents have the opinion that if their kid has a university degree, they are on their way to getting a brighter future. In essence, Indonesia needs a USA-type NCAA system (but customized for Indonesian badminton).2. Massive participation and involvement by Indonesia's huge population and youthful demography. Once we have strong incentives and a reasonable safety net, the next question: is it possible for us to possess a big collection of highly motivated outstanding players? Yes! We shall capitalize on our natural strengths as part of our winning strategy. Our 240+ million population size is a huge boon in our favor.Furthermore, our current demographic distribution is skewed towards the young. Our population age 0-14 is 27.7% of our total citizens, compared to 16.6% for China, 15.7% for Korea, and 13.5% for Japan. We can have both a huge young talent pool and big market of fans & buyers of badminton products+shows. Even though the early skill-introduction focus should be on children age 5-8, their family and friends are also useful as fans and consumers. This will surely invite business from the sports industry and consumer goods companies. From a huge talent pool, it is only a matter of time we shall see outstanding talents. Out of 1000 children who started playing badminton, 1 will emerge as very talented. Out of 1000 very talented youth, 1 will emerge as an outstanding badminton talent. So, from 1000000 (1 million) children, we will see 1 outstanding talent.Out of 10 million badminton-playing male children, we will get 10 outstanding male players for our Thomas Cup team. Out of 10 million badminton-playing female children, we will get 10 outstanding female players for our Uber Cup team. Note: Indonesia has 34 million boys between age 0-14, 33 million girls between age 0-14. For a small country like Singapore, what I am talking about is not statistically possible, while for Indonesia, it is possible to utilize our huge natural human resources as part of our strategy.I would also like to add the fact that historically, Indonesians originating from Sabang to Merauke could become world-class players. Aceh (Firdasari), Palembang (M. Ahsan, Debby Susanto), Padang (Markis Kido, Pia Zebadiah), Samarinda (Denny Kantono), Jakarta: (Ardy Wiranata, Vita Marissa), Tasikmalaya (Susi Susanti), Bandung (Taufik Hidayat, Ricky Subagja), Cirebon (Candra Wijaya), Purwokerto (Christian Hadinata), Banyumas (Tontowi Ahmad), Yogyakarta: (Sigit Budiarto, Finarsih), Kudus (Liem Swie King, Hariyanto Arbi), Surabaya (Rudy Hartono, Alan Budi Kusuma, Tony Gunawan), Jember (Muljadi), Manado (Liliyana Natsir), Makassar (Rosiana Tendean), Ternate (Rexy Mainaky), Papua (Nintya Maheswari)............. history shall repeat itself.Nationwide school system supportive towards badminton programs (including badminton introductory programs, extracurricular programs, PE teacher training, participation in county-level school tournaments etc.)3. A healthy sustainable nationwide ecosystem that are conducive for player development. By this, I mean there should be focus on getting 'more' and 'better':Nationwide distribution of good coaches with various accredited skills (Physical Education Teacher level, BWF (Badminton World Federation) level 1 for local clubs, BWF level 2 for stronger centers of excellence, BWF level 3 for international level competition, BWF level 4 for the world's best players)Healthy competition among local badminton clubs corresponding to flourishing participation-growth.Multiple corporate-sponsored centers of excellence throughout our archipelago (at least 10). Indonesia now has 6 centers, all in Java island. One National Training Center that is efficient, conducive to learning, and top-notch in everything.Sports industry that are prosperous through badminton activities & products. These are the main players who will give big contracts for top badminton talents.Thriving well-funded/well-sponsored local tournaments (including county-wide school team competitions, county-wide individual tournaments, etc.) run by capable event managers. Consumer goods companies (Nestle's Milo, Pepsi's Gatorade, Unilever, P&G, Sosro, Mayora, etc.) are very likely participants in sponsoring the events because they have a vested interest in selling their mass-products.Burgeoning University-level competition (similar to the NCAA in the USA). There should be more and more Universities that are willing to give scholarships for prospective students possessing badminton prowess.More and better... active & responsible PBSI administrators and technical officials at the National, Provincial, and County levels.Once we have identified the three conditions needed for Indonesian Badminton Domination, PBSI's to do list under Mr. Gita Wirjawan became clear:1. Improve the incentives for players and provide a safety net.During Indonesia's badminton domination days of 1970s, PBSI get 0%, the athletes get 100% of all sponsorship money they get. In 1979, Liem Swie King earned US$100,000 per year (mainly through endorsement deals) when our GDP per capita was US$ 300 per year. So, it was economically very enticing to be a top earner in badminton. However, in the late 1980s, PBSI management at that time forcefully grabbed the athlete's income for their own needs. That was a major detrimental factor why Indonesia's domination in badminton unravelled; there weren't enough incentives for the next generation of athletes to be big winners... Many parents think: why bother concentrating my kid's life in badminton, PBSI would always take 50% of his/her income away.PBSI today no longer use the archaic 'collective contract' system with Yonex where PBSI officals get 50% of the athlete's sponsorship income. This was a major source of remorse by badminton athletes for the past 20+ years.Starting February 2013, Athletes now directly choose the badminton equipment brand sponsor that offer them the best deal. Liliyana Natsir now get Rp 1.3 billion per year directly from Victor (Taiwan company) with another Rp 1 billion in bonus if she wins the World Championship, Simon Santoso get Rp 1.2 billion per year from Li-Ning, Hendra Setiawan get Rp 1 billion per year from Yonex. When the income reached Rp 10 billion (around US$ 1 million) per year, many families will rethink their children's career alternatives. Note: Tiger Woods earns US$ 60 million per year, Maria Sharapova earns US$ 50 million per year, Saina Nehwal earns US$ 6 million per year.Indonesian badminton athletes need commercial agents.PBSI used to demand 80% of an athlete's income from non-badminton-equipment endorsement deals such as P&G's shampoo commercial for Liliyana Natsir. Now the athlete get 100%, PBSI get 0%.PBSI will keep pushing the badminton athletes to become bigger stars in the eyes of the public. The more the public see them as stars, the more benefit the athletes shall reap (more fame, more endorsement deals, etc.)... For example: the athletes will be in more shows like Tukul's 'Bukan Empat Mata' (Indonesia's version of Jay Leno's Tonight's Show) etc. pretty much like how US athletes market themselves.Liga Mahasiswa (LIMA) badminton started in 2013. Right now only a few universities offer scholarships for students with badminton skills. But we shall surely see more progress in the future.2. Increase the young badminton-playing populationPBSI is experimenting with BWF's Shuttletime program to improve introduction to badminton for kids age 6-8. There are around 148,000 elementary schools in around 500 county level areas (kabupaten & kotamadya) who need to adopt this program. PBSI officials already know which areas should be the priorities. If you want to learn more about Shuttletime, go to http://www.bwfbadminton.org/page.aspx?id=15529 PBSI should try to convince the government to build more public badminton courts all across the country; I know this is a far stretch. These courts can be used for schools to give badminton extracurricular options for their students.PBSI shall orchestrate badminton marketing so more and more kids are enticed to try out badminton as recreation alternative; not necessarily for PBSI to do everything themselves. For example, the music industry can be a collaboration partner. The first step is... making badminton a cool hobby alternative. Afterwards, we shall see more people passionate about the sport. More good things happen after that....3. Further develop a sustainable badminton ecosystem that is conducive for player development (thus, obtaining badminton world-domination).PBSI will start training and certifying coaches with BWF level 1 programs in 3 different cities in 2013. Coach certification programs were never seriously implemented in Indonesia before. There are around 2000 listed local clubs in PBSI today, along with demand for more children training, we hope we can see 10000 clubs in 10 years.Indonesia is already blessed. There are 6 corporations that each support their one badminton center of excellence not for the purpose of making money, but for Indonesian glory and unity. Jaya Raya Jakarta, Tangkas Specs Jakarta, SGS PLN Bandung, Mutiara Bandung, Djarum Kudus, and Suryanaga Surabaya are the pillars of Indonesian badminton for the last 50 years... 95% of all our badminton legends came from these 6 centers of excellence. These centers identify talents and then give them 'badminton scholarships' (free training, free food, free lodging, free tournament expenses, etc.) for hand-picked children, usually starting from age 12 until they enter the National Team. Only strong large corporations with strong nationalistic ideals can sustain a badminton center of excellence for many decades. National glory is the incentive for them. For the purpose of badminton world domination, PBSI needs more of these centers. Probably at least 2 in Sumatra (Medan? and Palembang?), 1 in Kalimantan (Samarinda?) and 1 in Sulawesi (Makassar?). If Indonesia has 12 strong centers of excellence, 6 in Java, 6 in other big islands, our chances of getting a big collection of outstanding players are enhanced tremendously. PBSI has the most to gain from this, thus they should assist and craft this ideal situation to become a reality.PBSI needs to revise some of their own voting bylaws. Better sports organizations incentivize positive badminton developmental work results with more voting power for whichever region do more good work. PBSI bylaws now give the same voting power for all provinces: 1 vote, regardless of whether the PBSI management of that area are lazy or not. Diligent provinces should get 5-7 votes, for example... If a better voting bylaw is enacted, the PBSI administrators will compete to outdo one another with productive work for Indonesia's badminton. With voting power, the diligent provinces have more power in determining who should lead PBSI and how things can be improved.

Who is the richest casino owner in the entire world?

It is common knowledge that casino businesses are never short of money. This is a very lucrative industry, and if the wages of regular workers are usually much higher than in any other service industry, we can only imagine how wealthy the owners must be! And of course, those who run the world’s biggest gambling resorts and centers are among the richest. And since the field is highly competitive, there are not too many of them; and sometimes these billionaires feud with each other. It’s always intriguing to lift the veil of the lives of the wealthiest people in the world. So let’s take a closer look at the casino owners who have managed to create some large gambling corporations of their very own! They have all followed a different career path; they also have different net worths, as well as widely divergent views on how to run a profitable gambling business.Sheldon AdelsonNet worth: $35.3 billionAdelson would have to be the number one figure in any top list of casino owners. He is the owner of the Sands Hotel and Casino and The Venetian, which are two of the most popular Vegas-based resorts of all. In 2004, Adelson started expanding into Macau and opened two facilities there. In 2006, he launched a casino in Singapore, which is becoming an attractive destination for Asian gamblers and tourists all over the world. Adelson didn’t stop there, and he is currently planning to open new venues in fresh markets; for instance, in Brazil. But he’s not just a talented entrepreneur; because apart from collecting money and increasing his areas of interest, he is also involved in the political life of America! Sheldon Adelson is a member of the Republican Party, and he actively supports Donald Trump. He also owns two daily newspapers: an Israeli and an American one. As of 2018, he’s estimated to be the 15th richest person in the world.Lui Che WooNet worth: $14.6 billionThe second richest man in the gambling world lives in Hong Kong. Galaxy Entertainment Group, which operates various casinos in Macau represents one key business venture of his; besides this, he also has a real estate holding company. Lui is a self-made billionaire who had a pretty tough life a kid and young adult. Indeed, as a teenager, he actually worked as a peanut seller! But after working hard to make ends meet, he worked as a stock keeper; and then he finally bought a firm at the age of 20!Outside of China, Lui keeps a low profile, which is actually pretty rare for casino giants. He donates to plenty of charity organizations and gives out prizes which are named after him. The Lui Che Woo prize is dedicated to solving important real-life issues like sustainable development, positive life attitude, and increasing human wellbeing.Chen Lip KeongNet worth: $5.2 billionSurprisingly, one of the wealthiest men in the industry is actually a resident of Malaysia. Chen opened his first casino in Cambodia back in 1994; and over time, he grew into one of the most influential creators of such establishments. Owing to these efforts, Cambodia has managed to increase its touristic potential and GDP.Even though the NAGA corporation Lip Keong built had a good reputation, it was quite a challenge for him to bring gambling games to Malaysia, which appears to be a country with a lot of corruption. However (and in many ways thanks to him!), the country started adopting international standards in terms of financial management and regulations.Lim Kok ThayNet worth: $4.3 billionThis is another powerful Malaysian figure in the Asian gambling world. His company, Genting, holds many casinos and cruises which are targeted at China’s middle class. Genting is actually a pretty old enterprise, founded in 1965. It provides numerous entertainments, including gambling ones; and it also owns some oil plantations and power plants. The Genting Group run by Lim sees its primary goal as contributing to developing tourism and promoting the image of Malaysia.James PackerNet worth: $3.5 billionWhile he began his business career in his family’s media business, Packer eventually switched to another area and started constructing a casino empire. He owns Crown Resorts, the biggest group of casinos in Australia.Packer made lots of partnership deals that boosted the profitability of his business. Various internationally-recognized betting platforms provided some really beneficial opportunities for Crowns. In the past couple of years, his life was mostly discussed in relation to his engagement and split with a singer Mariah Carey.Steve WynnNet worth: $3 billionAdelson and Wynn have been fighting for decades. The Venetian casino was built quite close to the Mirage owned by Steve, and the same happened with Palazzo and Wynn Las Vegas establishments as well!Steve Wynn owns several legendary casinos located in Las Vegas, Biloxi (Mississippi), and Macau. Bellagio is probably the most famous facility run by his corporation – it is depicted in many movies, and features some really gorgeous water shows.Known as an art collector, he acquired famous works of Vermeer, Rembrandt, Picasso, Matisse, and numerous other icons of fine arts. It is not by any means an unusual matter for this businessman to buy a painting for more than $30 million! At the moment, he is married for the third time (the first two occasions involved the same woman!); and his ex-wife, Elaine Farrell Wynn, who co-founded some of the casino resorts, is now also one of the richest people in the industry.Recently, many allegations against him were reported – people shared their stories of what an intimidating experience it was working for Wynn. In February 2019, Wynn Resorts was fined a record $20 million because of such allegations.Stanley HoNet worth: $2.5 billion (net worth of Pansy Ho is currently bigger: $3.8 billion)Stanley Ho is the most influential person in Macau gambling. Indeed, for 40 years, he was the only operator there! Apart from developing many luxurious casinos, he has brought many other ideas to fruition too: for instance, he established the first helicopter route. His whole family is engaged in the business, and this man has people to share his money with – he has no less than 17 kids! His wife Angela Leong became a director of one of the casinos, and his daughter Pansy Ho is now the most important gambling world figure in Hong Kong (she’s a co-chair of MGM China and a managing director of some firms). Two films “Casino Tycoon” were inspired by Stanley’s life, as well as a video game adaptation too.Kazuo OkadaNet worth: $2.1 billionThis man is commonly known by the name ‘Pachinko King.’ He helped Steve Wynn build his own casino empire, and he also worked as an executive at Wynn Resorts. Then he built a gambling venue in Manila, Philippines, and started his own company. And Okada Manila is still his most significant investment up to now.In recent years, his corporation has been accused of fraud and bribery. Okada had some problems already in 2011 when Wynn suddenly cut him out of business. Then, Philippine authorities charged his resorts, which led to a series of lawsuits and conflicts. Finally, the Universal corporation removed Okada from his position.Like many wealthy people, Kazuo is an art lover. He has an impressive collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean art, and he has established a museum of works accumulated from various auctions.Brothers FertittaNet worth: $2.1 billionFranks and Lorenzo Fertitta own 17 casinos in the suburbs of Las Vegas. They also used their money to invest in their passion for martial arts. In 2001, they acquired the Ultimate Fighting Championship; under its new owners, this project underwent some serious expansion. In 2016, they sold it for $4 billion, which was 2,000 times more than their initial investment! Nowadays, they often share their entrepreneurial insights in the media.Other FiguresThere are many more people making a fortune with their casino businesses. John Paulson (net worth of $5 billion) is a hedge fund manager who became a large MGM Mirage shareholder in 2010. Phil Ruffin (net worth of $2.7 billion) is the entrepreneur with a highly diversified business profile: he owns casinos, racing tracks, parts of the oil production company, and even some real estate. Kirk Kerkorian is also worth mentioning – this owner of MGM Mirage died in 2015, with a final net worth of $4 billion.
