PDF Editor FAQ

What should everyone know about CAB and NRC?

NRC (National Register of Citizens) was an exercise solely for Assam to identify indigenous people and those who would have proof of entry into the state/country latest by midnight of 24th of March, 1971. If you had proof, you were in as an Indian citizen. The state of Assam decided to increase the ambit of relevance to people who for all intents and purposes were believed to be localized enough if they had voted in an election or two or could prove positively a direct descendant connection with somebody who had passed the 1951 NRC test.Fair enough. In or out depending on if you can prove it. Of course, my guess is that the only thing that might be irksome would be to not become an Indian citizen & enjoy whatever benefits are accrued from the same. Those not passing the test might continue in an as is condition unless their countries would take them back and they would want to go. However, logic eludes me over why anyone who chose to run would choose to return. The exercise was completely botched up by the authorities in charge & a number of prominent locals were left out. This would mean that the voting populace had taken a hit. And that's bad news for all politicians. Not singling out anyone here. After tons of political hand-wringing, BJP decided that a countrywide NRC, the whispers of which one could hear as far out from Assam as Delhi and as close as Bengal, would definitely spell chaos and my goodness, loss of votebanks.Another bank of sorts going under would be bad news. Also, never forget the stone thrown in the opposite side to deflect attention from economy and the pesky onions - those memes coming back is really bad news. Even the overactive BJP IT cell & our non-onion eating Red FM with some colleagues who tried to convince us otherwise, couldn't keep our eyes off the rocketing onions. Ek bhindi, do pyaaza was now Ek pyaaz, do bhindiya. Bad joke. Stank like a stale onion.Time to call the CAB. (Another irresistible bad one.)Citizenship Amendment BillThere is absolutely no denying that the once part of us Indian subcontinent countries that chose to be Nations with a national religion like Pakistan & Bangladesh and Afghanistan (ok technically not ours but bhai-bhai, right?). There also is no denying that the Hindus in these countries were not allowed to live freely enough & got oppressed enough to choose to run away into India or perish. There is no denying that the demographics of these countries showed starkly depleting Hindu population by percentage also probably because the majority population did rise faster. Our collective bleeding hearts at the Centre decided to now do a consensus of all the foreign people present in our country again starting from the North Eastern states and this time use, not a time stamp (ok, a later date such as 2014 is the cutoff) as the deciding factor but religion. So, if you belong to a Faith other than Islam, have run away from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan into India (upto 2014), you can become an Indian citizen. No questions asked. No Muslims who have come into India due to religious prosecution are allowed this privilege. No other religions from any other country are allowed the privilege - be they Hindus from Sri Lanka or Timbuktu. Just to prove point. What we as Indians need to recognize at this point is that this act is not discriminating against the legit Muslim immigrants who passed the NRC test.Neither is this discriminatory against the existing Muslims in India. With that out of the way, I would say my reaction is that can India afford to attach so many more within its fold causing a dent on resources, jobs, land and all that seven billion are already fighting tooth and nail over. The world predicts that wars shall be fought over water and here we are, trying to incorporate an enormous strain upon our already stretched resources - people we really are not responsible for.A peaceful Assam is erupting over the fear of loss of ethnicity.Muslim brothers and sisters see this as a direct affront to the religion. Can India afford this chaos at this time is the question that begs answer.I can only go back to my old analogy of the stone thrown to distract. While the CAB has been passed with brute majority, while social media is afire with a Home Minister's masterstroke, while there will be lakhs added as citizens to enjoy what billions haven't enough of, remember that somebody's gonna pay.Who else but those that are honest taxpayers. Who else but those that shall share. This government didn't bring new jobs, it just brought in greater competition & lower wages and higher taxes.

What are the options for Indian government after final list of NRC?

Assam Final NRC list released.3.29 crores applied for citizenship but 3.11 made it to the list and about 19,06,657 excluded.Of course there is chance for them to appeal in 400 appellate tribunals forming in the whole state and if not resolved they can approach courts. They will not be put under detention and enjoys all rights till all legal process are completed. But why this NRC? what is its relevance? let us find its time line.{1950: Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act comes into force following influx of refugees from then East Pakistan to Assam after partition.1951: First Census of Independent India conducted. That itself looses political partiy’s appeasement on them. At least they can work, live but can not participate in democratic process. That way we are showing humanity and also doing justice to the actual citizens of this country.Humanity may be considered, but not nationality.JAI HIND1.Assam final NRC list released: 19,06,657 people excluded, 3.11 crore make it to citizenship list

Why are North East states opposing the NRC and the Citizenship Amendment Bill?

The Northeastern states of India are not protesting the NRC. They protest against the CAA.The rest of India is not protesting the CAA as much. They are protesting a possible NRC.It is important to understand the difference between the two.The NRC is a sort of checking exercise to identify who is a citizen. The northeasterners, especially the Assamese, asked for it and won a case in the Supreme Court to implement it. They are worried that a lot of Bangladeshis are coming to their states and threatening local cultural norms. After implementation of NRC, the argument is that many would be found to be illegals and be sent back. Now, the CAA is an exemption for certain migrants who are believed to be victims of religious persecution in Bangladesh and Pakistan. For the northeast, the worry is that the CAA exemption might be large enough that many of the illegals would be legals and thus their culture would continue to be in threat. And they are protesting against that. For rest of India, CAA is not of as much impact. But, the worry is that given that top ministers like Amit Shah have talked about the NRC implemented nationally it could bring up a situation where normal citizens living across India could be termed as non-citizens just because of the absence of documentation. Now, Assam’s situation is quite a bit complicated. When I was visiting Silchar in eastern Assam a while ago, there was a lot of local complaints against the “illegal Bangladeshis”. However, on further digging it was not that Bengal came into Assam, but in that part Assam came into Bengal.Parts of eastern Assam were part of the Sylhet region that was traditionally Bengali. In 1874 this region was split from Bengal and added to Assam for various reasons (How the 1947 Sylhet partition led to Assam’s politics of the foreigner). Given the population of Sylhet, this made the Bengalis dominate Assam’s politics. In 1947, the British Raj gave Sylhet a referendum option [a rare kind] — 1947 Sylhet referendum — and the people chose to join Bangladesh by very thin majority. However, given that the district had a lot of Hindus and that the river management would be hard, the representation of a patriotic Abdul Matlib Mazumdar was heard and India was awarded parts of Sylhet and that is in present-day Assam. Many of the Bengali people in that region [Barak Valley] are natural citizens for a very long time. And these are then mixed with recent migrants, especially after the Pakistan army did genocide in that population (Naria massacre, 1971 Bangladesh genocide). In 1985, Indian government entered into a deal with Assamese people Assam Accord to accept any migrant before March 1971 as citizens and anyone after that as illegals. The government through CAA is modifying that agreement by allowing migrants even after 1971 as citizens. The argument is that massacres continued after March 1971 (Krishnapur massacre) and persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh happened well after that, moving many refugees outward.
