Don’t argue with cops, or with other people for that matter. Don’t try to bribe officials - that will get you a one way ticket to court. Pay your fines. Honour your obligations.Improve your English (or your French). It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it probably has to be better no matter how good it is.Canada respects all cultures. It does not respect people trying to impose their cultures on us. That includes home grown cultures - French Canadians have their culture, English Canadians have theirs, the First Nations have their own. Share, don’t insist. Don’t assimilate, but do integrate. Before you know it, you will be watching hockey, saying sorry to people who bump into you, and holding doors for people 10 meters away.Learn about our systems. Elections. Courts. I never failed in any of the CA examinations (a rare feat) till my last May attempt. I cleared all my exams till CA Final group I (I appeared group-wise for both intermediate and Final) without tasting failure.Once I qualified CA Final group I, some kind of arrogance that “CA exams are simple” grown in me. I thought I am almost CA. I started spending my time on Quora and YouTube without studying for Group II.I even got a second chance as exam was postponed for one month due to Lok Sabha elections. I got another (third) chance as my first paper was postponed. Still I screwed my prep by what my brother call as “Quor”ikkuka (Korikkuka in Malayalam means nibble).When results came as expected, I failed. My parents never blamed me. Both my Achan (father) and Amma (mother) supported me. That was my first failure in a public examination. Since exams were postponed, results came late. Because of which I had only about 2.5 months for my preparation. I almost had to start from scratch (I studied something in my previous prep).I deactivated Quora. Since I have deleted FB account years back, that was not a problem. I surrendered my smartphone to my Amma (mother) and switched to a base model phone (this guy is like a fifth member in our family). I am a person who can't study for more than 1.5 hours in a stretch. Still I ensured to study for atleast 7 hours a day (maximum was 10 hours).I can't say I slogged hard as I have occasionally watched YouTube videos. But my Amma was bit vigilant. She reduced her professional work and shifted her office to home temporarily though she had to do field work (She is a civil engineer who currently works as professional valuer for scheduled banks).I haven't really solved problems except for AMA in my first prep. I never had an idea how to write for exam. So I applied for an online Test series. It really helped me. I haven't attended classes for AMA and Direct tax. Though I attended class for ISCA, it was not useful. I attended for IDT during my previous prep but there was sea of changes bcoz of GST (amendment) Act, 2018. Also our faculty didn't solve much problems in classroom (though he provided us with good foundation to solve problems).It worked well, probably the best in my life. The result:I got exemption in all the papers. The 2nd rank holder got 69% (though it was for both group together). I got 70% for group II alone.My group I results:I got 513 (64%) for both groups together which would definitely would have put me in top 20. Since I appeared group-wise, I didn't get rank.Alas I even screwed my group I prep (though not in much scale like my last exam). I could have appeared for both groups in my first attempt and could have secured a rank (it's over and is a History). I could have atleast score better marks in group I (it's infact not bad).Rank doesn't matter, but failure in last exam was really a bad mark. It put an end to my winning streak in my CA examinations. There is popular saying in Malayalam: “Breaking the pot at the end” which means making a big mistake at the end.Even that failure was an important lesson for me: Not to get too overwhelmed on your results (overexcitment on victory and overemotional on loss).Anyway, now I am CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT (though I have to undergo mandatory 15 days IT training to apply for membership which is purely technical). I had qualified GATE 2016 and applied for BPCL, HPCL and BARC. I got interview call letters from BPCL and BARC. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the interview of BPCL. Hence the only PSU I can explain about here is BARC. So, here goes.The interview at BARC only tests basic knowledge of mechanical engineering. However, it is considered as the toughest technical interview of the country.You will initially given a sheet of paper and a pencil. You'll be asked to write down 4–5 subjects of your choice. Questions asked will test the fundamental concepts of the subject. Interviewers are very helpful as well as friendly. They keep on encouraging you to find the right answer if you get stuck at any point of time.You have to be thorough with all concepts of the subjects that you choose. Even though questions will be asked from only those, the interviewers make sure that you have an in-depth knowledge about it. The usual duration of a BARC interview is around 45–60 minutes and as the duration increases after this threshold, your chances of getting selected also increases.Subjects of my choice were Strength of Materials, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Vibrations. The questions asked in my interview wereWhat's stress and strain? Give the tensor form of Generalised Hooke's Law.You're given a long bar with a force P at one end 3P at the other. What's the stress in the bar? Is there any stress due to inertial forces?Plot the variation of heat flux and temperature across the wall of a plane wall and a hollow cylinder, if outside temperature is higher than inside temperature. Explain why.What's the physical significance of Prandtl number?What do you think about shear stress acting on hydrophobic surfaces? Will it be zero?My interview lasted for an hour and 10 minutes. It was a different experience all together. And one any person serious about research must attend.Now, coming to IITs, I had applied for MTech (Res.) program at IISc Bangalore and the 5 major IITs (IITB, D, M, K and Kgp). I got interview calls from IISc Bangalore for 3 different courses - Mechanical, Aerospace and Nanoscience. Since the courses I applied for in IITs didn't require interview, I got direct admission letters from IITM, K and Kgp. I can give an account of how my interview went at IISc Bangalore.Again, I have to say that the interviewers, despite being some of the brightest minds of the country and hence the busiest, were really helpful and encouraging. The interview started with 2–3 minutes of niceties, after which they asked me which subject I was most comfortable in facing questions with. I said Solid Mechanics. Some major questions were:Consider a dam. It has water on one side of it and air on the other side. It is fixed at the bottom. Which beam can be used to best resemble the condition? When I said cantilever, they said okay. Now, draw the variation of pressure. Find the centroid of the resulting triangular distribution over the beam, from first principles. Then, I was asked to calculate the deflection of the beam and the boundary conditions I would assume. I have to say, that they made me solve the entire problem. Phew!Consider a beam subjected to bending. Assuming rectangular cross-section, derive the equation for shear stress distribution, clearly explaining each step. Plot the variation of shear stress across the face as well. What happens to the variation if it's a circular cross section? After these questions they asked me to derive the equation for second moment of area of a rectangular cross section on the board.The next question was on Mathematics. They gave me a matrix and asked me to find its eigen values. When I completed, they asked me the concept behind eigen values and what it means if eigen values are imaginary.That was all in the interview. They asked me to leave after around 30–35 minutes. I was actually happy because I could answer the first two questions fairly well, though I needed some help from the faculties in the third. Overall it was an excellent experience to have.Good luck! :)
