PDF Editor FAQ

Do people like Pat Robertson, John Hagee and Jack Van Impe seem sincere to you? Are they in the business of fear mongering and preaching end times sermons for the money? Is that why they always have books, or personalized bibles for sale?

Thank you for the question on “end time” preachers, “Do people like Pat Robertson, John Hagee and Jack Van Impe seem sincere to you? Are they in the business of fear mongering and preaching end times sermons for the money? Is that why they always have books, or personalized bibles for sale?”Every pastor preaches on the imminent return of Jesus Christ and if they don’t then they are not believing Jesus’ words that he will return for his followers. The Apostle John records the words of Jesus in John 14, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going” (Bible Gateway passage: John 14 - New International Version). Notation: All quotes are from the New International Version. The writer Luke records the words of Jesus in Acts 1, “6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (NIV).Throughout the New Testaments, the writers encourages the believer to look forward to the return of Jesus Christ. The return of Jesus Christ was a prominent message as it was part of the salvation message by the Apostles. Thus for any pastor to preach that Jesus is not returning or returning soon fails to understand the message of Jesus. Jesus is coming back for his followers. The question of the motivation of the “end time” preachers in our modern period as being enriching themselves is one in which only the Lord knows. For he is the only one who knows the thoughts and intents of every person. It is liken to ask, “Do Christians give offering to get a tax deduction?” I do not know the hearts of the “end time” preachers/teachers but God will revealed their hearts and our hearts as well in what we do for him.The question of fear mongering is a characterization that I would not use. Christians have been complacent and comfortable in the Western World. We are less interested in spreading the salvation message and more interested in our health and wealth. Christians are called to make disciples, not to make wealth on earth. Christians are called to be witnesses, not to witness their growth of their retirement accounts. Should Christians have a healthy respect and reverence knowing that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Absolutely. Christians are to be reminded that they are to engaged in the King’s business and not just our own business on earth. It is true that if the Lord returns, those on earth will face a fierce persecution from the Antichrist. The Book of Revelation speaks of the wrath of God upon the earth and the persecution by the Antichrist on those who refuse to submit to him including death. As Christians, it ought to be our desire to share the Gospel of salvation so that those who believe will not have to enter the Tribulational Period. The question of making money on the preacher’s sermon and books, that is a personal decision by them. They have a right to copyright their material just as any writer has that right. Whether they should be exercising that right is another question. If that is livelihood, then I would agree that they ought to have some compensations for their work. If they are being paid by their local church, I would hope that they would use the proceeds of their sales to advance the Kingdom of God. We are only stewards of all that God has given us. The material doesn’t belong to us. It belongs to God.If money is the driving force for preaching and teaching, that person has fallen short of giving God the glory and praise that only He deserves. His motive is compromised and likely his walk with the Lord is compromised as well. His/her own heart will excuse or condemn him/her before the Lord.SUMMARY: Let’s hold off judging one another for there is only one Judge.

Why does Theresa May want the EU to sort out the borders, but she won't do anything about the Irish border? Surely isn’t it better for her and Britain (and Ireland) if the border is closed?

This is something that has contributed to my becoming ‘reluctantly political’, as it says in my credential. I despise politics, and harbour sentiments that could charitably be termed uncharitable towards the institution and those involved in it. Okay, I harbour sentiments along the lines of kill it, kill it with fire. There. And yes, I realise the irony, and it makes me incandescent with rage at those who have dragged me, reluctantly, into the political arena.Okay, it might be perimenopausal hot flashes, too.TL;DR in simple English:Leavers voted to take back control:of the UK’s ability to make its own trade dealsof the UK’s borders. Therefore,The UK needs to sort out its own borders, whilstThe EU already has protocols in place for its borders, soSome aspects of the UK’s border and the EU’s border have to be negotiated. However:Northern Ireland doesn’t want the border re-instated,The Republic of Ireland doesn’t want the border re-instated,The EU and USA do not want the border re-instated,BUTBrexit MPs voted for controlled borders including the NI-RoI border EVEN IF IT MEANS BREAKING AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT.The substantive, real-world Brexit/Leave campaign - the bit that wasn’t nebulous nonsense about sovereignty or outright lies on busses - was fought on taking back control:of the UK’s ability to make its own trade dealsof the UK’s borders. It was pointed out at the time that the borders to be controlled included those between Northern Ireland and the Republic, between Gibraltar and Spain, and the Juxtaposed Controls under which travellers are pre-screened before embarkation and which permit British Customs and Immigration officials to operate in mainland European countries. However, this was pooh-poohed or simply ignored by the Leave campaign.Given that the Leave campaign specifically focussed on the UK controlling its own borders, it makes sense that the victorious Leavers should be responsible fordetermining the form of, andcontrollingthose borders. Not the EU. Quite specifically, the Leavers do not want the EU to “dictate” the UK’s borders.Nota Bene: The entire Eurosceptic movement, from the day the UK entered the EEC right up to June 23 2016 and beyond, has been founded on the principle that the EEC/EC/EU should not “dictate” to the UK.And now they want the EU to sort out the UK’s borders????!!?!?!??!?!Now, in point of fact, any border is effectively TWO borders that abut one another: Country/federation A’s border, and Country/federation B’s border. A and B may set their own requirements for their border. A’s requirements for their border need not mirror B’s requirements for theirs, and vice versa. Some aspects of the requirements may need negotiation, agreements, treaties, laws, etc.So, in simple English:The UK needs to sort out its own borders. The EU already has protocols in place for its borders. Some aspects of the UK’s border and the EU’s border have to be negotiated. The NI/RoI border.Over 3,000 people died and countless tens of thousands were injured and crippled during an undeclared 30-year civil war over the NI/RoI border. This war was merely the latest iteration of violence since the the NI/RoI border came into existence in 1921. The violence spread out to the island of Great Britain, to the Republic of Ireland, and to continental Europe. The NI parties to this war have links to renegade regimes and world terrorist organisations, including the provision of terrorist expertise and training to those regimes and organisations. The Good Friday Agreement, or Belfast Agreement, brought the hostilities to an end - barring a few splinter groups, and assuming the goodwill of all parties in handing over and destroying their arsenals. The UK, RoI, EU and USA were all involved in the fraught, convoluted, angry, exhausting negotiations that effectively ended, not a century, but almost a millennium of varying degrees of hostility between the two islands. It’s been amazing. Not without blips, but it has turned Northern Ireland into one of the safest, most easygoing places on earth. Nothern Irish people love it. Irish people love it. No one wants it to change back, not even the DUP still living in the 17th century want to make a stop in the late 20th.At 7.20pm on 8th February 2017, the UK House of Commons voted 327 votes to 288 against protecting the Good Friday Agreement during the Brexit negotiations. The following is a list of those 327 MPs who should burn for eternity in their own circle of Hell:Nigel Adams (Conservative - Selby and Ainsty)Adam Afriyie (Conservative - Windsor)Peter Aldous (Conservative - Waveney)Lucy Allan (Conservative - Telford)Heidi Allen (Conservative - South Cambridgeshire)Sir David Amess (Conservative - Southend West)Stuart Andrew (Conservative - Pudsey)Caroline Ansell (Conservative - Eastbourne)Edward Argar (Conservative - Charnwood)Victoria Atkins (Conservative - Louth and Horncastle)Mr Richard Bacon (Conservative - South Norfolk)Mr Steve Baker (Conservative - Wycombe)Harriett Baldwin (Conservative - West Worcestershire)Mr John Baron (Conservative - Basildon and Billericay)Gavin Barwell (Conservative - Croydon Central)Guto Bebb (Conservative - Aberconwy)Sir Henry Bellingham (Conservative - North West Norfolk)Richard Benyon (Conservative - Newbury)Sir Paul Beresford (Conservative - Mole Valley)Jake Berry (Conservative - Rossendale and Darwen)James Berry (Conservative - Kingston and Surbiton)Andrew Bingham (Conservative - High Peak)Bob Blackman (Conservative - Harrow East)Nicola Blackwood (Conservative - Oxford West and Abingdon)Crispin Blunt (Conservative - Reigate)Nick Boles (Conservative - Grantham and Stamford)Mr Peter Bone (Conservative - Wellingborough)Victoria Borwick (Conservative - Kensington)Karen Bradley (Conservative - Staffordshire Moorlands)Mr Graham Brady (Conservative - Altrincham and Sale West)Sir Julian Brazier (Conservative - Canterbury)Andrew Bridgen (Conservative - North West Leicestershire)Steve Brine (Conservative - Winchester)James Brokenshire (Conservative - Old Bexley and Sidcup)Fiona Bruce (Conservative - Congleton)Robert Buckland (Conservative - South Swindon)Conor Burns (Conservative - Bournemouth West)Sir Simon Burns (Conservative - Chelmsford)Mr David Burrowes (Conservative - Enfield, Southgate)Alistair Burt (Conservative - North East Bedfordshire)Alun Cairns (Conservative - Vale of Glamorgan)Mr Gregory Campbell (Democratic Unionist Party - East Londonderry)Neil Carmichael (Conservative - Stroud)Mr Douglas Carswell (UK Independence Party - Clacton)James Cartlidge (Conservative - South Suffolk)Sir William Cash (Conservative - Stone)Maria Caulfield (Conservative - Lewes)Alex Chalk (Conservative - Cheltenham)Rehman Chishti (Conservative - Gillingham and Rainham)Mr Christopher Chope (Conservative - Christchurch)Jo Churchill (Conservative - Bury St Edmunds)Greg Clark (Conservative - Tunbridge Wells)James Cleverly (Conservative - Braintree)Geoffrey Clifton-Brown (Conservative - The Cotswolds)Dr Thérèse Coffey (Conservative - Suffolk Coastal)Damian Collins (Conservative - Folkestone and Hythe)Oliver Colvile (Conservative - Plymouth, Sutton and Devonport)Alberto Costa (Conservative - South Leicestershire)Robert Courts (Conservative - Witney)Mr Geoffrey Cox (Conservative - Torridge and West Devon)Stephen Crabb (Conservative - Preseli Pembrokeshire)Tracey Crouch (Conservative - Chatham and Aylesford)Byron Davies (Conservative - Gower)Chris Davies (Conservative - Brecon and Radnorshire)David T. Too many to list, frankly.Chinatown – outside of the usual average Chinese restaurants, notable for a couple of Pakistani/Indian places:Biryani Tika KababMarhaba Halal CuisineAddendum #1--College Avenue/Rockridge (College runs into Berkeley, so the Oakland portion is only about 1.25 miles long)Belotti Ristorante: Northern Italian, NOT Sicilian/Neapolitan. Closer to French food than anything else. My spouse and I consider this the best restaurant in the East Bay.Enoteca Molinari: Here's your Southern Italian food!Oliveto/Oliveto Café: Upscale Italian but we've been burned by some bad dinners at high prices. Belotti is better, cheaper, and consistent.Noodle Theory: Housemade Asian fusion noodles on a carefully limited menu; good dumplings too. We like the spicy pork noodles, aka dan dan mein without the sesame paste. Duck curry noodles are amazing but super-rich; we would split it next time.A Cote: Long-time small plates stand-byA16 Rockridge: Excellent Italian, we rate it distant second to BelottiHoly Basil Pho: Well-rated Vietnamese phoAddendum #2: Grand Lake/Grand Avenue past Lake MerrittEnsarro: Was one of our Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant favs but no longer; we prefer Lemat/Berkeley or Injera/Alameda. YMMVCafé Romanat: Pretty good Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant and a lovely coffee service areaGrand Lake Kitchen: Well-regarded take-out/cafe, expanding to an outpost in the Laurel neighborhood later in 2018.Camino: Chez Panisse alum Russell Moore's open-fire restaurantIkaros: Decent Greek food, especially if the owner's there. Skip the saganaki, though: they don't do it properly.Contrasto: Modest little Italian restaurant with some very nice dishesJong Ga: Our pick for traditional Korean, especially lunch when you can avoid the silly AYE BBQ crowds that come for dinner. All alone:Montclair Village, Daughter Thai Kitchen. Hands-down the best Thai/Issan fusion outside of SF borders. Limited menu; excellent starters are fusion style but mains are traditional (served as rice plates). Less sugar and more heat than other Thai restaurant in the EBay. Skip the soups but their grilled foods and curries are excellent. Owners have 2 other restaurants but DTK is the one focused on the more authentic dishes.
