Where I live (Alberta) there is a link to a Bill of Sale pdf on the back of the vehicle registration certificate. You just download the document, fill out the information about the vehicle, both you and the buyer sign it, the buyer hands you the money or cheque, and off you both go, you with the money and the buyer with the car. It’s worthwhile to do two copies of the Bill of Sale, one for each of you, in case you have to prove you sold the car.The buyer needs this document to register the car in his own name. You keep the license plates here. Often you do this in the parking lot of a registry office because the buyer can’t drive it anywhere without plates.In the old days, there used to be a Bill of Sale on the back of the registration certificate itself, so you and the buyer just filled it out, he kept the document, and you kept the money or cheque.Sometimes, if a car died on the highway, the owner used to fill out the Bill of Sale on the back of the registration, sign it, put the registration on the dash with the keys on top of it, take the plates off, and walk away. Yes.If you are buying a new car, you can buy it in whatever province you want, but have to register it in the province in which you live. If you live part time in multiple provinces, part time, I think you have to register it in whichever province your current drivers licence is issued by. If your licence is different from where you are living, they will likely make you transfer your licence first.Just a note, if you are buying a pre-owned car, the same applies, but it will have to undergo a thorough Out Of Province Inspection at a registered garage before you can register it.Edit: If you are registering it in a province with lower provincial taxes, like Alberta, you can apply to get the provincial sales tax returned. In some cases, you can even have it waive up front.Also, as a follow up to another’s answer: the distance driven on an “in transit” sticker doesn’t matter. What matters is that you can only drive it from where you bought it, to your city/town of residence, where you must register it before driving it any more. Several years ago, I bought a classic car in California. I had the bill of sale faxed to me, bought the “in transit” sticker in Alberta, and flew down to California with the sticker in my luggage so I could drive it back. I am unsure if the information was outright false, or is simply outdated. In either case, as of April 2013, you do have to pay PST on the vehicle where purchased, no matter where it is registered. You call the police!Unless you were on vacation for years I would thing it would be fairly straightforward. Anyone registering the car would have to present some sort of forged bill of sale and the police should be able to deal with that.I wonder if there's more to this that we don't know.
