No one really knows, but good estimates range from 12 to 15 million, or about 5–6% of the US population. Imagine if all the ‘stolen’ jobs they now have were available for LEGAL immigrants and US Citizens. Now imagine that dishonest people who hire illegal aliens couldn’t hire them and had to pay a ‘normal’ going wage. Illegal aliens take jobs from US citizens and often work for wages that are well below normal.Here are three examples from 10–11 years ago, that I know of personally:A friend owns a small electrical contracting business. He employs about eight people and works in both Washington and Oregon. He pays his employees the going wage, which is about $30-35 per hour depending on skill level, pays the Federal taxes, benefits, etc. He recently lost a bid job to a dishonest contractor who was using illegal aliens, NOT paying the required taxes and NOT paying benefits. At $10/hr and no benefits or taxes, the corrupt contractor enjoys a savings of about $64,000 per electrician per year ($85,000 vs. $21,000). The apartment building owner called my friend about two months later and asked him to straighten out the mess left by the original contractor. Not only was he using unlicensed electricians, but they used the wrong materials, and installed them in an unsafe manner. This building owner was fortunate he was sharp enough to realize something was amiss and get it corrected before the safety of his apartment building and occupants was put in jeopardy. How would you like to live in one of these apartments with the electrical system installed by people who didn’t know what they were doing?One of my neighbors is a carpenter working in construction and remodeling. His boss does the right thing by paying the going rate (about $18/hr), paying taxes and benefits, and has had to lay off part of his work force because of unfair competition from corrupt contractors who only pay $8/hr, NO taxes, NO benefits, etc. An acquaintance at work has a son in the drywall business who has lost his job, again for the same reasons.During my summer conversations, a man in my neighborhood told me that three years ago he was making $80,000 a year driving trucks, but would be lucky to make $40,000 in 2007, because some trucking companies were hiring illegal alien drivers.This problem is quite easy to solve, if we only had politicians with spines.Pass a National E-Verify Law, which requires every applicant for a job or benefits to be cleared through the E-Verify system.Prosecute to the full extent, any person who knowingly hires someone without using the E-Verify program. This includes revoking their business license when found guilty.With no income or ‘freebies’, most illegal aliens will pack up and self-deport. No massive government roundups would be needed.

a) The applicant shall employee the following staff:i) One Supervisor holding a certificate of Competency and appropriate permitobtained from the A.P.E.L. Board. Provided that if the applicant is himself aSupervisor’s Competency Certificate and appropriate Permit Holder, it shallnot be necessary for him to employee another person holdings a SupervisorCompetency Certificate and permit granted by the A.P.E.L. Board.ii) In the case of appropriate firm one of the partners there of shall hold acertificate of competency and appropriate permit granted by the A.P.E.L.Board or shall have a his employee a supervisor holding a certificate ofcompetency and appropriate permit.b) Two wiremen, holding a certificate of competency and permit granted by theA.P.E.L. Board one wiremen and one supervisor-4 (650 V) holding a certificateCompetency and permit granted by the A.P.E.L. Board.c) The applicant shall furnish to the Secretary of the A.P.E.L. Board the names.Competency Certificate numbers of the Supervisor and wiremen employed byhim and also submit original permit books for verification and endorsement.d) The applicant shall possess the following instruments namely:i) One No. earth resistance testing meggerii) One No. 1000V and 1 No. 500V Insulation testing meggers in case of licenseupto 11KV and 2.5KV/5KV, 1000V and 500 V insulation testing meggers incase affluence upto 33KV and above. The instrument should have a range of 0-500 mega ohms and above for 1000V insulation testing megger.iii) Tong tester having volts, ameres and ohms/tong tester with amperes and multimeter having volts, ameres and ohms.iv) One No. live Line testerv) Standard wireguagevi) First Aid Box.e) A contractor’s License shall not be granted to any holder of a Certificate of Competency while he is in the employee of a Electrical Contractor or any where else.f) All contractors holding/applying for ‘A’ grade contractors license shall invariably have an office in the State of Andhra Pradesh and all correspondence shall be made to that office only.Regulations 37: Conditions for grant of Grade ‘B’ Contractor’s License:A License in Grade ‘B’ shall be granted only to a person (or a firm) approved by the Board who shall comply with the following requirement namely:(a) The applicant shall employee one wireman holding a certificate of Competency and Permit granted by the A.P.E.L. Board, provided that if the applicant is himself a wireman holding a certificate of Competency and Permit granted by the A.P.E.L Board; it shall not be necessary for him to employee another person holding a Wireman Competency Certificate and Permit. The applicant shall furnish to the Secretary of the A.P.E.L. Board Competency Certificate number and Permit Number of the wiremen employed by him.(b) For taking up medium voltage Electrical installation work in the consumer’s premises, he shall employee a person holding appropriate certificate of Competency and Permit granted by the A.P.E.L. Board for direct supervision of the works undertaken by him.Upto 50 HP / 37.5 KW Wireman (without ITI)Upto 75 HP /56 KW Wireman with IT or Supervisor (Up to 650 V)(c) The application shall possess the following instruments namely;(i) 500 V Insulation testing megger and(ii) Tong Tester and Multi-meter (having volts, Ampere and ohms),(i)One No. live line tester(ii)Standard Wire gauge(iii)A Contractor License shall not be granted to any holder or Competency Certificate whilst he is in the employee of a Licensed Electrical Contractor or anywhere else.
