I have been working with financial modelling in an Investment Bank and a Private Equity fund. I would give you the following pieces of advice:- Color scheme: although many people use font colors to indicate if a cell is an input, a formula or a reference, I would suggest you use blue (for inputs) and green (for external references) backgrounds instead (with no background color for formulas). This way, it is much easier for the user to know whether or not he should input any values into a particular cell, even if it is blank.- Auditing: auditing can be hard. I suggest you use an add-in to help you trace precedents and dependents, since excel is not very good at it. I have recently discovered a free add-in called macabacus (Excel Add-ins for Financial Modeling) which is very helpful. You can download it anywhere (it is a macro) and use the shortcut CTRL + Shift + [ or ] to audit cells. It is great.- Lookups: instead of using HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP for searching values in matrices, you should use a combination of the formulas INDEX and MATCH. (In this website there is an explanation about those formulas' syntax: How to Use INDEX MATCH). Some benefits of the change: no need of sorting values in ascending or alphabetical order, the possibility of having a result column on the left of the look up column etc, no need of auxiliary column/line with numbering etc.- VBA: avoid using Macros when they are not absolutely needed. Many people are scared of them, since it may not be clear for the user what calculations or procedures are made. However, if you really need a macro: try to write comments on your code, use range names and adopt a background color (such as orange) for the cells that are going to be calculated by the macro.- Circular references: avoid circular references when you can. If you are unable to find a way out, you could enable the iterative calculation option in excel, which iterates to find a solution for your circular references. This option will make you workbook slower, though.- Sheets: less is more. Try to have fewer sheets, with organized content in each of them. You can create an index for each sheet like this:- Gridlines: remove them!- Dates: when using dates, know that there are formulas specifically designed to work with them. Some of them are: EDATE (finds a date x months after or before a point in time), EOMONTH (finds the last day of the month) and DAYS360 (find the number of days between two dates based on a 30-day months calendar).If I think of any other tips, I'll add them here later.
