The Christian or Western world marks Sunday as their day of rest and worship, while Muslims refer to Friday as their day of rest and prayer. The Jewish calendar counts Saturday – the Sabbath – as the day of rest and worship.The 12 months of the yearBoth Saturdays and Sundays are common days of rest in the calendar. I have had many assorted technical problems to work with; and, have had success as well as some failure in solving in available time. Not all technical problems need be critical, but often fascinating.The one that sticks with me the most was one I solved more as a hobby than one work related. It was back in the early 1980s when computers were starting to get more popular as home devices.I was very tired of tracking relatives birthdays, anniversaries, and other events from year to year. Every new year, I would buy a new wall calendar and have to transpose all these events by hand to keep them current and up to date. No software was available to do this for you at the time, and I wanted some program to do this for me, where all I had to do was enter the new year date, and it would create a printable version I could hang on the wall.I had already wrote a program in APL that would format a small calendar formatted to show a whole year with days of the week; however, you had to tell it which day of the week it started with.I wanted my program to calculate when the day of the week started just by entering the year. Once all that was calculated, the rest was just window dressing to align all the days accordingly.The Holidays had their own chalkenges, some easy and fixed (like Xmas, New Years, Columbus, etc.), others semi fixed (like Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc.), and some floating (like lunar religious days). I created a recursive algorithm to calculate Easter based on known Full Moon cycles, but found someone else's iterative method using modulo arithmetic.My interesting approach to calculate the starting day of the week was based on a lot of false assumptions, but turned out to work and was Y2K compliant. It revolved around the ideal number of days in the year being 364 and then deal with the propagational affect if the one day of a normal year and 2 days of the leap year. Time being the worst mixed radix System we use. 52 weeks in a year, 7 days in a week, and 12 months in a year. 364 is divisible by both 52 and 7 without any remainders. So count the days of propagation based on the year of interest (assuming the calendar started on the year 0, [when was Washington born? Which calendar?]), then using modulo arithmetic dividing by 52, the divide that remainder by 7, and you should get a remainder between 0 and 6. Will the number correlate with Sunday, Monday, and so on? Sure enough. Bingo, it works.It was fun. Even worked to check what day of the week you were born on.
