Oh lord yes. Probably the best one was one night on the oncology floor there was a new admission, a middle aged female that initially came to the ER with chest pain. The good news it wasnt her heart bad news they saw a small mass. The doctor decided to admit her and do a workup the next day. Her name, Therra Smith. There was a elderly woman on her last night on this earth, her name was Theresa Smith. Now the confusion , two different doctors and two different nurses involved, I was one. My little elderly woman had just passed, we were waiting for the orderlies to come take her to the morgue. Now the other nurse was admitting Therra Smith. The doctor who was going to do the assessment on Therra came on the floor wanting to know where Smith was. The desk attendant sent him to me. He comes to the room, I'm doing final charting he walks in and says Miss Smith. I look up not sure what I was hearing and here this poor clueless bastard was trying to raise the dead. He reaches over to turn on the light and still trying to get her to talk I walked in and said can I help you? I just wanted to talk to her for a minute. I said your gonna need a spirit board , seance or priest. Cue the clueless look. Shes dead doc. Passed about an hour ago. Still clueless. I said obviously theres a mix up. Let's go to the desk. I’ve seen this, “One teacher’s brilliant idea to stop school shootings has nothing to do with guns” for a few years now.My wife, a 5th grade teacher herself, showed it to me. Here are the main points.… every Friday afternoon, [the teacher] asks her fifth graders to fill out a sheet of paper.She asks them who they would like to sit with next week and who has been an exceptional class citizen that week.The teacher then looks for patterns to figure out which kids are lonely, isolated, or being bullied.It sounds beautiful in practice. It’s caring and directs attention to exactly the kids who need it. On that element, it’s great.Here’s why it won’t work.Because no mass shooters are 5th graders. This solution works fine in the elementary school setting, but this isn’t a problem for them. Bullying, as in the sort of life defining misery some children endure doesn’t begin until the independence they face in Middle and High School. That is the point where teachers are expected to lay out topical curriculum and not be an hour replacement for mothers. They have one hour to teach them intensive subjects. Believing that social engineering is also within their aptitude or responsibility is a bit hubristic.Then there is the nature of child development. Having taught Middle and High School myself, I find it hard to believe that students would take seating charts like this seriously. At the very least, it may be very good to assess patterns in the class, (Who had a million friends last week and none this week?) is particularly interesting, but when we are talking about people who can legally vote and who have known each other for over a decade, I find the teacher’s role in their personal lives insufficient to force positive interactions. It doesn’t work in High School settings like it does in Elementary School. Remember how you called your 2nd Grade teacher “Mom” that one time by mistake? You know why you stopped doing it later? There’s a reason for that.That said, she can do amazing things with this… for 5th graders. In fact, I really love parts of it for team building and could see it work for lower Middle School if adapted accurately. But if her mission is to stop school shootings, then she is solving a problem which doesn’t exist for her age range.I want to be clear, I want to believe in this one. I love it on a lot of levels, and I will not say that it can’t work. I’m just saying it will need a lot of adaptation to work in the upper grades where the types of isolation she’s seeking to solve happen and actually produce school shooters. But suggesting that untested ideas like this will do anything at all, much less that they should become universally adopted by schools. No. Just no. Our teachers have a hard enough job teaching, which is taking less and less priority to social engineering them, something which, if we are honest with ourselves, may be a large part of the problem of creating school shooters. This is particularly true when the loudest champion for this brilliant idea is someone who confessed in the article’s opening that it took her an hour to do a long division math problem. I’m sorry, but it needed to be said. People need to collect themselves here and understand that complex problems are not solved by simple solutions.As I said, I believe there are nuggets of great ideas in this, but to be applicable, many teachers are going to need to adapt, modify, and share their results in an evolutionary ecosystem of ideas for this to achieve the high meaning intentions of this teacher’s ambition.
