How good is the MS in CS program at NYU Tandon?
I believe that there does not exist a comprehensive review for the Masters program at NYU Tandon (yet). I will answer to the best of my abilities, and try to keep my answers as non-biased as possible.Short Answer: Pretty good! Better than the average schools across the United States, but not quite up there when compared to Ivy League and other reputed schools.Long Answer:Let’s dissect what really matters to a student. From my perspective, it is:EducationJob OpportunitiesOn-Campus OpportunitiesReturn On Investment (ROI)1.EducationThe Masters program at NYU Tandon is geared more towards the industry. Having said that, there are tons of opportunities to get involved in research here.Courses:Let’s talk about the courses first. I believe that the courses offered here fall in the following brackets:Algorithms (this course is mandatory for all Masters students)Core Courses (These are fundamental and (kind of) introductory courses. A Masters student is supposed to take 4 such courses)Capstone Course (This course requires a project to be completed. Alternatively, a student can write an MS Thesis to satisfy this requirement)Elective Courses (These courses are generally more advanced and more niche-focused. You can take any number of these as long as you satisfy the above course requirements)A student needs 30 credits to graduate. Most courses are worth 3 credits each. Some courses are also worth 1.5 credits. Doing the math, the minimum a student can take to complete his Masters is 9 courses.Students typically take 9 credits per semester. It would take four semesters for a student to graduate, unless they take permission from the department to take more than 9 credits in one of the semesters.Please bear in mind that some courses can be used to satisfy both core and capstone requirements.You can also pursue courses from other NYU schools such as CDS (Center for Data Science), Stern School of Business, and other departments such as the Financial & Risk Engineering department. The maximum you are allowed to take is 6 credits. Keep in mind that your internship (which is worth 1.5 credits) also falls in this 6 credits bracket. So this would mean that if you are pursuing an internship, you can only take 4.5 credits outside NYU Tandon.Here is my two cents on the courses:Some of the courses are very basic (e.g. Foundations of Computer Science, Programming Languages) that I believe are not worth the money that you would be investing. But a lot of students take such courses so that they can easily manage their schedules. Such students would typically be working on-campus, or have taken “difficult” courses.Some of the courses are fantastic! Such courses (that I know personally of) would be Algorithm I, Machine Learning, Principles of Database Systems, Introduction to Java, Web Search Engines, Digital Forensics, Penetration Testing, Big Data, and Deep Learning.One thing that I noticed is that there are a lot of less niche-focused courses in NYU Tandon, when compared to other good schools such as NYU Courant, Stony Brook, CMU. Most courses are “foundational” but very few courses dive deep into any focused area.Another huge caveat is that there is a massive competition to get popular courses like Machine Learning, Information Visualization, Big Data etc. The problem is that NYU Tandon has fewer seats (about 50–60) for these classes. It would be a frustrating experience for students who really want to take these courses. NYU Tandon has acknowledged this problem, and is currently trying to hire more professors that could take these classes. They have already increased their infrastructure capacity to accommodate more students (370 Jay Street). So I believe that by 2019, we might see more classes for these popular courses.Regarding to what courses you should take, I personally feel that you should take courses you are really interested in. If you do not get the courses you are interested in, or you are not sure whether you can manage difficult courses, try taking:two “difficult” and one “easy”one “difficult”, one “medium”, and one “easy”The above combinations should work well for you in the first semester. Once you complete a semester, you will get an idea of your capacity and limits so that you can decide accordingly for yourself for the subsequent semesters.To decide which courses are “easy”, “medium”, or “difficult”, ask the students who are currently pursuing their Master in NYU Tandon.Professors:Professors are an eclectic mix of good and bad here. Some professors really care about their students, and genuinely want their students to succeed. These professors will give their 100% when it comes to teaching. They are very approachable and can help you navigate the direction of your career. My personal favorites are Lisa Hellerstein (typically teaches Machine Learning and Theory of Computation) and Linda Sellie (teaches Algorithms I).As much as I hate to admit it, a few professors do not teach well. They do not care about their students, just read out the slides aloud in a monotonous tone, and grade homeworks late. I do not mean to generalize but I have noticed that there is a tendency for famous professors to act in such a way. These “famous” professors are more focused on their research and teaching is secondary to them.Research:Contrary to what many people think about NYU Tandon, we do have a lot of research going here. Some of them are:Game Innovation Lab - This lab is primarily focused on using Artificial Intelligence for Games. To get into this lab, you typically need to have prior research experience (or) taken the Artificial Intelligence/Artificial Intelligence for Games course by Professor Julian Togelius. Ultimately, the professor will decide whether you would be a good fit for this lab looking at your interests, goals, and previous experience.ViDA Lab - This lab is for those who are interested in Visualization, Imaging, and Data Analysis. Best way to get in is to take a course offered by the professors of this lab and score an A. You would additionally need to convince them that you have what it takes to excel in this lab.NYU Center of CyberSecurity - A lab focused on cyber security. I do not know much about it.For a complete list of all the research groups, please navigate to the following pages: Labs & Groups and Centers & Institutes.Additionally, you could approach professors directly and request them to consider you for a research opportunity. A good practice is to read the professor’s research paper, show enthusiasm and interest, communicate your interest by explaining your resume, grades, and demonstrate that you have read his/her research paper.2. Job OpportunitiesComing to the big question that most students have, how are the job opportunities at NYU Tandon?I personally believe that getting a job depends on the personal brand you build while you are at NYU. You will get job opportunities, but to grab them, you will have to make the most out of all the resources that NYU provides. Just because you are studying in NYU does not automatically mean that you will get an internship/full-time job. Please bear that in mind.We do not have official figures for NYU Tandon Masters in CS students. However, we do have a broad survey for all the students across all the departments and all years (undergrad and grad). If you want to have a look, please navigate to this page.NYU has a personal career site (NYU CareerNet) where a lot of employers post job opportunities. NYU also conducts several career fairs where you can have a one-to-one with companies and try to sell yourself to them. We have all the big tech and finance companies attending these career fairs, including but not limited to, Google, Facebook, Nvidia, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and the list goes on!For the Fall semester, the career fair would typically be in September. For the Spring semester, the career fair would typically be in March.We also have employers hiring NYU students in-house. These are called “OCR” jobs in the NYU CareerNet site. Be on the lookout for these jobs as you have a higher chance of atleast getting an interview call.I will now tell you of what I have observed in the past year I have been here:Having previous work experience will tremendously help you in getting more calls from companies.If you don’t have prior work experience, try working on academic and personal projects, and sell yourself through them.Initially, everyone struggles to even get the first call. It’s okay!Never miss out on career fairs and OCR jobs!Try networking with as many people as you can.Keep applying to job opportunities across NYU CareerNet, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.Don’t just stop at applying online. Find out who the recruiter is and email them personally.Better yet, find an NYU Alumni that works in the company and try getting a referral from them.Slowly but surely, you will get interview calls. Make the most out of them.If it doesn’t work out, try finding out the reason and make sure to work on it.I believe that around 80%-85% of MS students who joined in 2017 are currently involved in an internship/research/on-campus job. For the students who graduated in 2018, roughly 60%-65% have full-time offers. Please note that these estimates are not official and just my estimates based on what I have observed, so take it with a pinch of salt.3. On-Campus OpportunitiesThere are plenty of on-campus opportunities for students across all NYU schools. Typically, students struggle to get an on-campus in the first semester, but most of them get it by the second semester.The key trick to getting an on-campus job is through a referral. If you do not have anyone who can refer you, try customizing your resume and cover letter for every on-campus job. Keep applying to as many jobs as you can. Try to find out the recruiter and reach personally via an email. Visit various departments and hand your resume in-person. Typically, students who score an A in any of the courses in the first semester, get to become the Teaching Assistant in the subsequent semester.Students are typically paid $18 per hour. The maximum a student can work is 20 hours per week. Those involved in research are typically paid more and get tuition waiver for an entire semester!Also note that NYU conducts a massive on-campus career fair somewhere in late August/early September. Make sure to attend that!4. ROIROI is heavily dependent on the tuition fees, living expenses, on-campus job, internship, and a full-time job offer by the time you graduate. I will list down the estimated expenses for each.Tuition Fees:As per the estimated expenses provided by NYU for Fall 2018, it costs $1819 per credit.First Semester - $1819 * 9 credits = $16,371Second Semester - $1819 * 9 credits = $16,371Note that there is a slight increase in the price per credit every year, but let us assume that it holds uniform for the third and four semesters as well.Third Semester - $1819 * 9 credits = $16,371Fourth Semester - $1819 * 3 credits = $5,457Total - $54,570 (approx. Rs. 37 lakhs)Health Insurance:It is mandatory for all F-1 and J-1 students to enroll in a health insurance plan. For international students, it is highly recommended that they enroll in the health insurance provided by NYU.Per Semester - $867Total - $867 * 4 = $3,468 (approx. Rs. 2.4 lakhs)Living Expenses:Living expenses are totally dependent on an individual’s lifestyle. It also depends on how far/close by you live to the school. For most Indian students, living expenses typically fall in the range $800-$1200.Let us assume the worst: $1200Total - $1200 * 24 months = $28,800 (approx. Rs. 20 lakhs)Combining all the above costs, we get:$54,570 + $3,468 + $28,800 = $86,838 (approx. Rs. 59 lakhs)You can mitigate the above costs by working on-campus and getting an internship. Let us see how far we can mitigate the costs.On-Campus - Most students typically get it in second semester.$18 * 20 hours * 4 weeks = $1,440 ($1,100 as the rest will be deducted as tax)$1,100 * 19 (assuming you don’t get on-campus for the first 5 months) = $20,900 (approx. 14 lakhs)Internship - These can range from $14 - $52 per hour, depending where you work. Let us assume it is $20 per hour and that you work for 35 hours per week. Typically, internships range for 12 weeks. Therefore:$20 * 35 hours * 12 weeks = $8,400 = $7,050 (rest deducted in taxes)Let us deduce the above from the total costs:$86,838 (total) - ($20,900 + $7,050) = $58,888 (approx. Rs. 40 lakhs)You can reduce upto $28,000 (approx. Rs. 20 lakhs) following the above calculations. You can reduce it even further if you start working earlier for on-campus and your internship is high paying.Further more, most students admitted to NYU Tandon get a scholarship ranging from $3000 - $15,000 per year. You can deduce your scholarship from the above calculation accordingly.Also, note that most full-time jobs will offer somewhere between $70,000 - $130,000 per year.You can now decide the ROI based on your background and financial condition.Conclusion:NYU Tandon provides decent education and benefits massively from being located in NYC. If you can afford the education, want to live in a big metropolitan city, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and don’t mind living in a fast-paced environment, then come and join me at NYU Tandon. :-DUpdate (08/29/2019):I graduated from NYU Tandon a couple of months back (May 2019). The full-time scenario was fantastic this year! About ~95% of the students were able to get a full-time offer. I feel sorry for you. You’ve learned an important lesson. Unless you are working for one of the top tech employers (of Google caliber), where the “heart and soul” translates into a job security and career future, you have zero control over the former. The widespread “offshore” “outsourcing” ended the era of stable middle-class careers in 2002. Never make any plans. Even if you are indeed “irreplaceable”, you can be let go or “outsourced” for a variety of “financial” reasons - none relating to your skills, hard work, or critical responsibilities.Doubt it’s your case, but a typical IT organization (wasteful and dysfunctional to begin with regardless of your contribution) can make such mistake costing them millions from some mission critical system downtime. And still wouldn’t hire you back. No one likes to be reminded of their mistakes. No one in IT is accountable for (70% to 90%) failures and losses. MBAs never learn.What did you do anyway? I mean what the project you put your “heart and soul” into, did? Choose your work carefully. 70% to 90% of today’s IT projects are unneeded R&D - the money sink to evade taxes and transfer money to the layers of middlemen. You are hired (among thousands of bodyshop-supplied “bodies” - per project) to imitate work, so the middlemen can get their commissions, and the corporate decision makers can get their kickbacks. Or just feel better commanding armies of keyboard-banging code monkeys.You didn’t bother to evaluate the business side, did you? It was enough the abbreviations in your resume matched the ones in the job description. If you want to have a career in IT, find companies that do something real, which they want you to contribute to - instead of letting clueless keyword-matching recruiters place you after finding your resume online. Finding good employers means proactive networking (e.g. being active in the professional online communities) instead of just posting your resume.The recession is coming. All that ballast you were part of will be gone for a couple of years. Many industry newcomers and other “optimists”, planned on enjoying stable income in 2017 and beyond, will find out where they are in the professional food chain - from their very first recession. I’ve survived two in the US alone so far. I know what happens during recessions. You got your warning early. Learn from it and adjust - get employed at a company you can grow (not as a contractor), while you still have time - the last months of the current “economic boom”.QA is very important. Just like development (coding) itself. If it gives you any comfort, clueless non-technical people at the top don’t give a damn about developers either. Outside of the dozen or so top employers I mentioned above: Google, Amazon, etc. the rest, e.g. the employer that laid you off - likely some corporate IT department or an old-school software sweatshop will never see you as a revenue generator. Being hired as a contractor (unless you are providing services on behalf of your own company) also means you are expendable.It is silly to expect being rewarded for good work in corporate IT (“technical” departments of non-tech companies). They (not necessarily your direct boss, some CFO signing your paychecks) hate you the moment they hire you - because they have to pay you. All your (short or long) stay there they’ll be looking for ways to pay you less or get rid of you via “offshore” “outsourcing”. I’d suggest moving out of IT - to the Googles of the industry. Or founding your own. You will not have any future in corporate IT. And the salaries are half of what Google pays its engineers. If you still want to stay there (it still owns 99% of tech jobs), lower your expectations, put in the minimal effort, and keep the low profile. They’ll get rid of you at the first opportunity anyway. You may last longer at a job like that if your bosses don’t know you exist.As far, as advanced notice, no one did that even 20 years ago. Definitely not today, when “outsourcing” IT jobs to the third world leveled engineers with minimum-wage Account Receivable clerks. The company also has security concerns. All respectable Fortune 100 corporations I worked for (as consultant) gave me 15 minutes to gather my belongings. Don’t feel bad doing the same to them.
